Charles Gounod composed this Requiem under the impact of the death of his four-year-old grandson, Maurice. According to information handed down, while finishing the details of this work he was overtaken by death. It was published posthumously in various constellations by his pupil, Henri Busser, but the only complete version from the pen of Gounod is the version for large orchestra, which is published here for the first time in a critical edition. Gounod's Requiem, unlike many contemporary settings of the Mass of the Dead, is not characterized by darkness and terror. Rather, with all of its trepidation - expressed through a marked chromaticism - an atmosphere of hopeful expectation, of trust in the grace and equity of the divine judge predominates. This confidence finds its expression in the choice of the fundamental key of C major, which is rather unusual for a requiem. The work was given an impressive performance on the occasion of the first anniversary of Gounod's death in the Parisian church of Sainte-Madeleine under the direction of Gabriel Fauré and it was highly acclaimed by the contemporary press. Anton Bruckner's Te Deum - a high point in the composer's output and one of the most important works of the sacred choral repertoire in the 19th century - is now available in a modern, scholarly edition. The Carus edition draws on both the two sources regarded as important, the autograph score and the first printed edition, with careful consideration given to variant readings. And so a music text has been prepared which reflects the composer's intentions as closely as possible. Great emphasis has been placed on a clear-to-read layout of the full score pages, as well as excellent legibility for the parts, which are available on sale. With current performance practice in mind, the clarinet parts are notated in B flat instead of A, corresponding with the first printed edition. The vocal score has been newly prepared to reflect current practical requirements. As an economical alternative, a chorus score is available. Bruckner's Te Deum is also available in carus music, the choir app. The app contains the music and a recording, as well as a coach to help with learning each choral part. In preparation: arrangement of the Te Deum for soli, choir, brass quintet and organ. Score available separately - see item CA.2719000.

Beethoven described his Missa solemnis as his greatest work several times, a work which, coming from the heart, was to touch and move audiences. The surviving sources enable us to recognize how intensively and how long he worked on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings, and the premiere took place, for good reason, in a concert hall. The chorus plays a key structural role in the work, and in the process has to master some extremely demanding sections. The leading Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich has produced an Urtext edition based on the available sources, and reflecting the latest state of scholarship. The Mass with Christmas hymns, Missa carminum is available from Carus in a orchestra version and in a version for choir and organ. The unique feature of this work is that each movement of the Ordinary employs a well-known Christmas hymn as an instrumental cantus firmus. In the score the text of each hymn has been included in the appropriate passage, so that the Christmas signature tune may be performed vocally, for example, by a one-part children's choir. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.9193300.

These variations are based on the choral Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele. Variation I, Maestoso, presents a solemn, canonic statement of the theme enveloped by dense, closely-knit harmonies. Variation II, Allegro, is clothed in polyphonic lines reminiscentof Bach's Orgelbuchlein chorales. Variation III, Vivace, is a playful bicinium with the cantus firmus featured in the soprano line, as the bass bounces along in a staccato duet. Variation IV, Adagio, displays rich chromatic harmonies which form a lush backdrop for the pedal solo. Variation V, Vivace, features the chorale in detached left hand notes while the right hand and pedal provide a playful accompaniment. In Variation VI, Andante, the melody vacillates between minor and major keys as syncopated left hand chords and pizzicato bass accompany the cantilena. In the concluding Variation VII, Presto, the left hand proclaims the theme in block chords as the right hand provides an exuberant garland of sixteenth notes while the pedal provides rhythmic drive with tympanic accents.

Johann Samuel Beyer (1669-1744) assumed the position of Kantor at St. Mary's Cathedral in Freiberg (Saxony) in 1699. Between 1716 and 1719 his Musicalische Vorrath (Musical source), a comprehensive collection of two-part chorale variations for organ or other keyboard instruments was published. The selection in the present volume offers an attractive enrichment for organists of liturgical repertoire for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany. An optional figured bass realization for the bass line has been added in small print. Clearly, practiced organists can shape and elaborate these pieces by means of improvisation.

Brahms's Ave Maria was composed in 1858. The widely-held opinions in the literature on Brahms - that the work has justifiably been forgotten, the part-writing is monotonous and the style and diction is ponderous - don't do justice to a truly charming piece, based on folksong-like models. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4018000.
