Inspired by the music of Sade, a popular singer in the 1980s, this serene Latin pop jazz original, Shades of Light, features a cantabile, lyrical theme. The melody calls for a cool, mellow execution supported by tenuto accompaniment figures. The solo part should be interpreted with a good rhythmic pulse punctuated with popular music inflections. Arranged for saxophone quartet (SATB/AATB).

Two objectives were in mind while transcribing the Finale. One was to produce a relatively clean manuscript with a minimum of articulation and dynamic markings so as to allow interpretation by the performers. The articulation markings placed at the beginning of the work are provided only as suggestions. Secondly, the melodies were divided among all parts, rather than a solo featuring just the soprano saxophone. The Finale, a molto allegro in rondo form, should sparkle with cheerful charm and wit. Saxophonists should strive for the lightness and grace so prevalent in much of Mozart's timeless music.

There is more light in this room when you are here is a fervently optimistic mood piece embodying the core themes of my song cycle The Lustful Mother. The title refers to another person - maybe a lover, child or friend - whose existence makes life more meaningful. In the first movement, the music wanders through the twilight, and the solitary recitation of the tenor sax is framed by answering sighs from the soprano and alto. In the second movement, the full quartet joins in the same hopeful song, that, endlessly swaying and discreetly circling, fills the whole space with its light. The work was commissioned by the Arcis Saxophone Quartet, to which it is dedicated.

For Ravel, the year 1917 was marked by his mother's death and the death of many of his friends who lost their lives in World War I. Hence, the suite he finished that same year can be considered as an elegy. Due to its classical, sonatina-like character, this piece does not radiate an atmosphere of mourning, but rather a light, cool serenity. This arrangement for SATB saxophone quartet is faithful to the original orchestral version. Titles: I. Prélude * II. Forlane * III * Menuet * IV. Rigaudon.

This fanciful jaunt through one of the classical repertoire's most beloved masterpieces starts in a doo-wop style and ends with a reggae feel without sacrificing the beauty and elegance of the original. Playable by junior high groups, it is also perfect as a light piece for professional players.

Johann Sebastian Bach composed this piece around 1725 at the beginning of his Leipzig years. The character of the Fantasia is serious and grave. Even the interludes, despite their lighter texture, maintain an overall contemplative character. The four-part double fugue is an example of Bach's unique contrapuntal craftsmanship. He combines two notably contrasting themes: the first is diatonic, rhythmic and agile while the second consists of a descending chromatic line.

Per Norgard DANCERS AROUND JUPITERI: 'Shadow Dancer', dedicated to Axel Borup-Jorgensen, as my birthday greeting on the composer's 70th birthday 22.11.94II: 'Jupiter Waves', dedicated to Dr. Jeffrey D. ThompsonIII: 'Day Dancer', dedicated to the dancer and choreographer Marie Lalander, as a homage: Marie wrote the line which inspired me for the title: 'Woman, oh you day dancer'.The title of the whole work is immediately intelligible if one compares the individual titles of the outer movements with the title of the middle movement.Axel Borup-Jorgensen and Marie Lalander could be said to be in rotation around Jupiter in the following sense:Axel's music has a 'shadow dancing' side, which can most clearly be heard in his works for harpsichord and double-bass - or in his work for organ. But his music has also a light side, which can be heard in 'Marin' or in 'Nordic Summer Pastorale'.Marie's dance and choreography contain both ecstatic forces of light and expressions of the suppressed and dark. The music of the middle movement on the other hand is in all ways inspired by the actual acoustic ion waves, that constantly arise through the collision of the sun wind with Jupiter's magnet field (registered by Voyager II, 1989). This movement is dedicated to Dr Jeffrey D. Thompson who made these NASA registrations publicly available in the CD-series'NASA Voyager Space Sounds'.Per Norgard.

This quartet for saxophones, entitled Introduction and Variations on a Popular Rondo by Gabriel Pierné, is a standard in the saxophone quartet repertoire. Composed in 1934 and dedicated to the Marcel Mule Quartet, this piece for advanced players is as bright and cheerful as a round dance should be, and yet, quite delicate and light in terms of writing. With many ornaments and variations, Introduction and Variations begins slowly but is interrupted twice by the rondo. Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) won the Prix de Rome in 1882. The composer wrote many chamber compositions, piano pieces, symphonic music and some oratorios.

As the light whose reflection in the water is sometimes broken by the waves, I used ascending and descending movement in the melody. The pervasive use of syncopation also enabled me to exacerbate the impact felt by the ebb and flow.
