$21.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

ISBN 9790007139049. Language: German/English. Adaptation of the motet Tristis est anima mea, attributed to Johann Kuhnau. The motet Der Gerechte kommt um comes down to us as part of the Passion cantata Ein Lammlein geht und tragt die Schuld by Carl Heinrich Graun, into which movements by various other composers, including Bach and Telemann, were also later inserted. According to the research of Diethard Hellmann, editor of this edition, the motet was originally an a cappella composition by Johann Kuhnau with the text Tristis est anima mea, which then was adapted - most likely by Bach - with a new text and the addition of instrumental parts. Considering that his works for chorus and orchestra once enjoyed great popularity, it seemed only fitting to turn our attention to Graun as an a cappella composer. The four choral pieces in Grauns typical empfindsam style were first published between 1776 and 1791 in the Vierstimmige Motetten und Arien. They, in turn, were issued by the Leipzig St. Thomas cantor Johann Adam Hiller and serve as the only source for this new edition (1997). $10.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

Text: Zimmermann, Joachim Johann Daniel / Ramler, Karl Wilhelm. Telemann’s passion oratorio “Der Tod Jesu†was composed in 1754-55, roughly at the same time as the same-named highly regarded work by Carl Heinrich Graun. Both pieces are settings of the same libretto by Karl Wilhelm Ramler. In this late work, Telemann consciously contrasts the carefully crafted recitatives with musically reduced solemn choruses to obtain an emotional reading of the Passion text.
This vocal score complements the Urtext score of this moving passion oratorio which is published as part of the “Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Worksâ€. The complete orchestral material is available on hire.

Since its first performance in Berlin in 1755, Carl Heinrich Graun's empfindsame (sensible) Passion Cantata Der Tod Jesu, with a libretto by Karl Wilhelm Ramler had long been one of the most frequently performed works in this genre. Until the end of the 19th century this work was able to maintain its position in the repertoire of numerous oratorio societies and singing academies (especially the Berliner Sing-Akademie). It was often given equal billing with Bach's passions, until finally, in the second half of the 19th century Bach's works became more predominant. With the publication of the present critical new edition (the first since it was first published in 1760), Der Tod Jesu is once again available for sale to the musical public. This makes accessible an epoch-making work which in its time set the standard for settings of the Passion.
