A century ago, James Causley Windram, then band director of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers (and later the Coldstream Guards) asked Gustav Holst if he would transcribe some of the composer's Hymns from the Rig Veda for military band. Always a band advocate, Holst readily agreed. In this thoroughly characteristic suite, two of Windram's settings (Hymn of the Travellers and Battle Hymn) have been edited for modern instrumentation, while a third (Hymn to Manas) has been arranged by Jon Ceander Mitchell from Holst's original choral setting.

This flexible piece in 4 parts was written by Jacob de Haan as a ‘theme tune’ for the Yamaha teaching method seminars in Germany. The solemn and dignified hymn-like melody will add a touch ofgrandeur to any performance. Vanuit zijn didactische ervaring met het componeren van eenvoudige muziek voor variabele bezettingen gaf de Nederlandse componist Jacob de Haan in 2004 een workshop tijdens het Yamaha Bläserklassen Kongress in Oberursel (bij het DuitseFrankfurt). Op verzoek van Wolfgang Feuerborn, leider en initiator van het project, schreef Jacob de Haan speciaal voor deze seminars een hymne. Hij noemde het stuk - heel toepasselijk - The Seminar Hymn. A Sevenoaks Suite was commissioned by the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Concert Band from Kent in the south-east of England. The suite describes 3 famous landmarks in the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge area: ‘Knole Park’, situated to the south-east of Sevenoaks. ‘The Chapel - Tonbridge School’: This movement centres around a hymn-like chorale, depicting the years of worship that have taken place within the chapel, and ‘The Vine Bandstand’ suggesting the type of music often played in bandstands. It is in march form, but is not actually a march throughout, veering off into other styles before ending emphatically.A Sevenoaks Suite werd geschreven in opdracht van de Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Concert Band uit Kent, in het zuidoosten van Engeland. De suite beschrijft drie beroemde landschapselementen en bouwwerken in de buurt van Sevenoaks en Tonbridge: als eerste ‘Knole Park’, dat ten zuidoosten van Sevenoaks ligt. Saving Private Ryan is certainly one of Steven Spielberg's most powerful films. The brilliant John Williams score creates part of this power. Hymn to the Fallen one of the most powerful and emotional melodies which appears during the closing credits, evokes a feeling of hope and strength amid the overall tone of reverence. Philip Sparke has transcribed this moving work for brass band using John Williams original orchestral score as the source. For added effect this work can also be performed with a wordless chorus, with parts being available separately.

This hymn was commissioned by â??Antwerpen 93â?. And this city, on the banks of the river Schelde has been nominated â??Cultural Capital of Europeâ? for 1993. The work-group â??animatieâ? took the initiative and commissioned a hymn, which -as the finale to a grand open-air event on 27th March- was premièred by hundreds of musicians from all over Europe. Philippe Langlet (France) was the conductor at this majestic occasion.Musically speaking the piece can no doubt be labeled easy. Indeed it is meant to represent a hymn, playable by all in different instrumental combinations. Consequently a variable instrumentation was chosen and a type of music, which by native is easily accessible anduncomplicated.The conductor is free -in the instrumentation- to score this piece according to his own taste. It is perhaps advisable to use the sharp brass in the forte parts, in order to make the range in the sound of the orchestra as colouful as possible. The percussion parts are not absolutely essential, so that the hymn can also be performed without percussion.

The European Hymn is the hymn not only of the European Union but of Europe in a broader sense. The melody has been taken from the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1823.In the last movement of this symphony Beethoven set music to the 'Ode to Joy' by Friedrich von Schiller from 1785. American Hymn was commissioned by the American Bandmasters Association and the United States Air Force Band. It received its premiere on March 5th, 1980 as part of the 40th anniversary of the American Bandmasters Association in Washington, DC. It is based on an earlier choral work which Schuman contributed to a comprehensive survey entitled American Hymns Old and New, published by Columbia University Press. The Langston Hughes text that inspired the original human is simple and straightforward, which is reflected in the melodic setting (quasi hymn-spiritual).
