On a war memorial in the Dutch village of Wons is engraved a list of names to honour the fallen in World War II. This is the basis for the name of this piece. However, this composition was written for everyone who has made Wons what it is today: a pretty place near to Lake IJssel with a comfortable way of life. The piece begins with a celebratory introduction in which the village is presented to the listener. There follows a delightful rhythmic and high-tempo theme that reflects the happiness, innocence and carefree atmosphere before the war. Now we hear a moody, fragmented theme depicting soldiers shooting. This is brought to a close with dissonant clusters of sound,intoning the dreadful tragedy of the war. The ensuing quiet gives way to a calm middle section in a minor key that portrays both frustration and consolation. The fast tempo of the beginning returns, this time in the form of a victory march. We hear freedom being celebrated. We hear the previous happy, innocent and carefree themes, too. There follows a festive, martial theme, a tribute to the village, before the piece closes with sounds of celebration.

Op de gedenksteen in het Friese dorp Wons staat een erelijst (roll of honour) gegraveerd ter nagedachtenis aan de gevallenen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De titel van dit werk verwijst naar deze lijst. Deze compositie is echter tevens geschreven voor alle mensen die Wons hebben gemaakt tot wat het nu is: een prachtig dorpje vlak bij het IJsselmeer waar het prettig toeven is. De compositie begint met een statige inleiding, waarin het dorp zich presenteert aan de luisteraar. Dan klinkt een aansprekend ritmisch thema in een snel tempo dat de vrolijkheid, onbevangenheid en onbezorgdheid van voor de oorlog uitstraalt. Dit gaat over in een melodie in mineur, die het naderendeoorlogsgevaar aankondigt. Dan is er een grillig thema met stops waarin het schieten van de soldaten te horen is. Dit eindigt in enkele dissonante clusters die het tragische dieptepunt van de oorlog accentueren. De daaropvolgende stilte lost op in een gedragen middendeel in mineur waaruit enerzijds verdriet en anderzijds troost spreekt. Dan komt het snelle tempo van het begin weer terug, ditmaal in de vorm van een vreugdemars. De vrijheid wordt gevierd. Ook het thema van de vrolijkheid, onbevangenheid en onbezorgdheid is weer te horen. Er volgt nu een statig martiaal thema, een eerbetoon aan het dorp, waarna het werk wordt afgesloten met feestelijke klanken.

Auf einem Gedenkstein im niederländischen Dorf Wons ist eine Namensliste zu Ehren der Gefallenen im Zweiten Weltkrieg eingraviert. Auf diese bezieht sich der Titel des Werkes, der wörtlich übersetzt ‘Ehrenliste’ bedeutet. Diese Komposition wurde jedoch für alle Menschen geschrieben, die Wons zu dem gemacht haben, was es heute ist: ein schöner Ort nahe des IJsselmeeres, in dem es sich gut leben lässt. Das Werk beginnt mit einer feierlichen Einleitung, in welcher sich das Dorf dem Zuhörer präsentiert. Dann erklingt ein reizvolles rhythmisches und temporeiches Thema, das die Fröhlichkeit, Unbefangenheit und Sorglosigkeit vor dem Krieg ausstrahlt. Dieses geht in eine Moll-Melodieüber, welche von der nahenden Kriegsgefahr kündet. Dann erklingt ein launenhaftes Thema mit Unterbrechungen, in dem das Schießen der Soldaten zu hören ist. Dieses endet in einigen dissonanten Clustern, die den tragischen Tiefpunkt des Krieges betonen. Die darauffolgende Stille löst sich in einen ruhigen Mittelteil in Moll auf, aus dem einerseits Verdruss und andererseits Trost spricht. Dann kehrt das schnelle Tempo des Anfangs zurück, dieses Mal in der Form eines Freudenmarsches. Die Freiheit wird gefeiert. Auch das Thema der Fröhlichkeit, Unbefangenheit und Sorglosigkeit ist wieder zu hören. Nun folgt ein feierliches, martialisches Thema, eine Ehrerbietung an das Dorf, bevor das Werk mit festlichen Klängen endet.

Sur le monument aux morts du village néerlandais de Wons est gravée une liste de noms en hommage aux soldats tombés lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ce monument a inspiré le titre de cette composition. Mais celle-ci a aussi été écrite pour toutes les personnes qui ont donné Wons son caractère d’aujourd’hui : un joli village proche du lac d’IJssel où il fait bon vivre. La pièce débute par une introduction festive qui présente le village l’auditeur. S’ensuit un thème allègre et délicieusement rythmique qui reflète l’ambiance joyeuse, na ve et optimiste de l’avant-guerre. Puis nous entendons un motif sombre et fragmenté, représentant les fusillades ciblant les soldats. Cettepartie se termine par un faisceau de sons dissonants traduisant le caractère tragique de la guerre. Le calme revient avec un passage tranquille en mineur qui évoque la fois la frustration et l’apaisement. Le tempo du début est repris, cette fois sous la forme d’une marche victorieuse. Puis résonnent les accents premiers de gaieté, d’innocence et d’insouciance, invoquant la célébration de la liberté. Un thème martial et festif en hommage au village nous mène un pétillant finale.

In 'Big Fun on the Bass Drum' the dream of every starter percussionist is realized.
He/she is soloist and is allowed to really beat the drum hard without the conductor putting a stop to it, but beware: a new skin is rather expensive.

'Big Fun on the Bass Drum' is not only about hitting as hard as you can, though.
A lot of attention is paid to playing the bass drum very softly. And what is more, the composer has found room to offer the soloist a real cadenza - at this point in the composition he/she can either play the partprescribed or give the audience an improvisation of his/her own.

Slaan op een trom is leuk. Slaan op een grote trom is nog leuker, maar 'top of the bill' is solist zijn op een grote trom!

In Big fun on the Bass Drum komt de droom van elke beginnende slagwerker uit.
Hij/zij mag zo hardals mogelijk slaan, zonder 'lastig'te worden gevallen door een dirigent, maar let op: een nieuw vel is duur!
Maar er wordt niet alleen aandacht besteed aan hard meppen in Big Fun on the Bass Drum, ook de zachte passages krijgenruim aandacht.
Verder laat componist William Vean ruimte voor de solist(e) zijn/haar kunnen te tonen in een heuse cadens!

From the beginning of the Middle Ages, we have known performance practices in which the duration of the notes can differ from the actual notation. In some cases, binary written melodies were performed in a ternary way. This isalso the case in the present-day shuffle: the written quavers are performed in a long-short system in which the ratio is 2:1. In other words, the performance practice is based on a triplet feel. In this composition, allingredients of the shuffle are featured: a vigorous swing rhythm, a walking bass, the successions of thirds in the accompaniment and the frequent use of triplets. To make sure that the binary written rhythms in the accompanimentsare performed in the correct ternary manner, Peter Kleine Schaars has notated the melody themes in triplets as much as possible. Thus, this composition is a very useful exercise for the swing development of your ensemble.Additionally, the work is a treat to listen to, so your audience will really appreciate this up-tempo big band like composition. All ternary rhythmic cells 17 till 24 pass in revue, furthermore much attention had been paid to acorrect performance of cell 4 in swing feel.

Al vanaf het begin van de middeleeuwen kennen we uitvoeringspraktijken waarbij de lengte van de noten anders kan zijn dan de daadwerkelijke notatie. Zo werden in sommige gevallen binair uitgeschreven melodieën ternair uitgevoerd.Dat is ook het geval bij de hedendaagse shuffle: de geschreven achtsten worden uitgevoerd in een lang-kortsysteem waarbij de verhouding 2:1 geldt. Oftewel de uitvoeringspraktijk is gebaseerd op een triolenfeel. In deze compositiekomen alle ingrediënten van de shuffle aan bod: een stevig swingritme, een walking bass, oplopende tertsenreeksen in de begeleiding en veelvuldig gebruik van triolen. Om ervoor te zorgen dat de binair genoteerde ritmieken in debegeleidingen op de juiste ternaire wijze worden uitgevoerd, heeft Peter Kleine Schaars de melodiethema’s zoveel mogelijk uitgeschreven in triolen. Hierdoor is deze compositie een zeer bruikbare oefening voor de swingontwikkelingvan uw ensemble. Daarnaast is het werk een feest om naar te luisteren en zal het publiek deze uptempo bigbandachtige compositie zeker waarderen. Alle ternaire ritmische cellen 17 tot 24 passeren de revue, daarnaast is er veelaandacht voor een juiste uitvoering van cel 4 in swingfeel.

In einigen Fällen wurden binär geschriebene Melodien ternär gespielt. Dies ist auchbeim modernen Shuffle der Fall: Die notierten Achtelnoten werden in einem Lang-Kurz-System“ im Verhältnis 2:1 ausgeführt. Mit anderen Worten, die Aufführungspraxis basiert auf einem Triolengefühl. In dieser Komposition sind alleZutaten des Shuffle enthalten: ein kräftiger Swing-Rhythmus, ein Walking Bass, eine Abfolge von Terzen in der Begleitung und die häufige Verwendung von Triolen. Um sicherzustellen, dass die binär geschriebenen Rhythmen in denBegleitungen ternär ausgeführt werden, hat Peter Kleine Schaars die Melodiethemen so weit wie möglich als Triolen notiert. Daher eignet sich diese Komposition zum Üben des Swings. Darüber hinaus hört sich das Stück so schön an,dass Ihr Publikum von dieser schnellen Big-Band-ähnlichen Komposition begeistert sein wird. Die ternären Rhythmus-Einheiten 17 bis 24 kommen alle vor, außerdem wurde ein Schwerpunkt auf die korrekte Umsetzung der Rhythmus-Einheit4 im Swing-Stil gelegt.

Si nous remontons au début du Moyen ge, nous savons que, selon certaines coutumes d’interprétation, la durée des notes pouvait différer de la notation. Parfois, des mélodies écrites en binaire étaient même interprétées enternaire. C’est le cas de ce shuffle contemporain : les croches écrites sont jouées selon un système long-court où le rapport est de 2:1. Autrement dit, en pratique, l’interprétation est fondée sur un ressenti ternaire. Tous lesingrédients du shuffle sont présents dans cette composition : un rythme de swing vigoureux, une basse walking, les successions de tierces dans l’accompagnement et l’emploi fréquent de triolets. Pour s’assurer que les rythmesécrits en binaire dans l’accompagnement soient interprétés en ternaire, Peter Kleine Schaars a, dans la mesure du possible, noté les thèmes de la mélodie en triolets. Cette pièce forme donc un exercice très utile pour permettre votre ensemble d’apprendre le swing. En outre, son écoute est un vrai plaisir, et votre public appréciera pleinement cette pièce de style big band au rythme enlevé. Toutes les cellules rythmiques ternaires 17 24 sont passées enrevue et une grande attention a été portée l’interprétation correcte de la cellule 4, donc avec un ressenti swing.

This present edition follows a double aim: to assist music students in getting acquainted with and growing fond of the music in Bach's time on the one hand and to prepare and facilitate teaching and studying Bach's small preludes, on the other. To meet the latter objective the more difficult dances and suite movements prove to be the most suitable. It is primarily a practical edition that follows closely the original music material. The original slurring has, however, been changed due to teaching purposes and in the interests of easier study (in several cases by omitting the original or by adding the most essential phrasing and articulation slurs). Suggestions for tempo,performance, dynamics and fingering have also been given. The eventually unusual fingering in some places promotes correct phrasing, articulation. Original ornaments that would pose considerable difficulties for the students have been omitted while the ones that can eventually be omitted depending on the rechnical skill of the students have benn put in brackets. In such cases an easier solution is, however, always indicated above the original in brackets. This does not exclude naturally that students capable of properly executing the original ornaments of these works without the distortrion of the melkody arches and rhythm should not play them in their full, not simplified form. Piano students on advanced level are recommended to compare the present edition with other, original text editions which disclose ornaments in their original form. As an example two pieces of this collection have been included in the appendix in the form they appear in the original text edition. This attempt provides possibilities both for the teachers and students to assess the nature and extent of editorial alterations. The name of the composer has only been indicated in case where it could be unambiguously identified.

Unsere Ausgabe hat ein doppeltes Anliegen. Einerseits will sie den Schülern helfen, mit der zeitgenössischen Musik Bachs bekannt zu werden und an ihr Gefallen zu finden, anderseits soll sie den Unterricht bzw. das Erlernen der kleinen Präludien Bachs vorbereiten und erleichtern. Für die letztgenannte Aufgabe sind die schwierigeren Tänze und Suitensätze am geeignetsten.
