The instantly recognisable and ever-popular Méditation, from the opera Tha s by Jules Massenet (1842-1912), remains a strong favourite in the classical repertoire, superbly arranged for Flute and Piano by French flautist, PaulTaffanel. Massenet first studied music with his mother before entering the Paris Conservatoire. He is best known for his operas, of which he composed over thirty. Tha s was first performed at the Opéra Garnier in Paris in 1894and continues to be one of the composer's most performed operas. The famous Méditation, is an intermezzo, originally for Violin and Orchestra, which has since been arranged for many different instruments, making it a frequentconcert piece. The arrangement for Flute and Piano remains in the original key of D major and displays the passionate religious intentions. Taffanel's adaptions include breath marks, phrasing, changing octaves for some notes andarticulation, among other aspects. Massenet's Méditation is challenging through its use of lyricism in the upper register, yet it remains a favoured and popular piece in the Flute's repertoire.

The air is heavy with flashy comments, when the flute, the bassoon and the piano start their debate in Storm in a Teacup (2014) by Kirmo Lintinen (b. 1967). Only 4'30'' of length, this virtuosic trio finds the piece after the grand rampage. Kirmo Lintinen is a man of many musical talents: composer, pianist and conductor. His catalogue encompasses almost all genres and categories of composition, from solo work to opera, and he operates with ease from one to another without being a crossover artist; in his case, the versatility is both internalised and innate. He often finds inspiration in French music of the 1920s and its intrinsic musicality. Humour and playfulness are characteristic elements of his music, as are a natural, musicianly approach and an enchantingly effervescent, even tongue-in-cheek texture.

Kimmo Hakola's Wind Quintet op. 96 (2017) was commissioned by the Kimito Island Music Festival. The composer sees that making the ensemble ultimately breathe and express itself as an organic, coherent subject should be the aim in composing for wind quintet. The normal chamber-music configuration is not a sufficient basis for me in composing a wind quintet: the instruments have to be compressed, reduced, even crushed together so that, in pairs and different combinations, they produce new, viable audio units. Collision often generates something new. Kimmo Hakola has gone through a number of styles and influences in his career as a composer, his idiom expanding at times to embrace Romanticism, Orientalism and klezmer. He has attained international recognition with an output that spans various genres from intimate solo works to full-length operas such as La Fenice (2011) commissioned by the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Many of his works are expansive and epic: his Piano Concerto (1996), for instance, clocks in at 55 minutes. Hakola says that he sees music as drama. His dramas explore almost Shakespearean extremes, from moments of raging sound and fury and violent battles to quiet moments of meditation and heart-rending monologues.
