POEM for Flute and PianoKozuch’s POEM is a plaintive elegy, perfect for memorial concerts, in religious services, or as a lyric interlude in recital. Although composed with piano accompaniment, the music is also very effective in performance with organ. Thaddeus Kozuch (1913-1991) was a Chicago-based pianist, composer, and professor at DePaul University and Northwestern University. His beautiful POEM was composed originally for violin and piano in 1937 for his wife-to-be, Jacqueline Frye. He revised POEM for flute and piano in 1988 but the work was discovered only recently in a piano bench by the composer’s daughter, flutist Ann Fairbanks.Although the final pencil manuscript is musically complete, it lacks dynamics, and this publication presents the music as the composer left it.The following performance suggestions are provided by Ann Fairbanks:Many nuances of the work may be left to the discretion of the performer. There are quite a few notes that may be slurred, such as sets of eighth notes or triplet-eighths; if notes are articulated as written, the tonguing should be legato.Dynamics for both flute and piano could be as follows: begin the work p, then crescendo to f in bars 6-7. Decrescendo in 10-11 to a p in bar 12. The most intense section (bars 16-32) should be played with energy and full sonority, including a crescendo in 26 to fin 27. The conclusion, beginning at bar 42, should be played p, with the last measures performed quietly.

The title Fanmi Imèn is Haitian Creole for Maya Angelouââ¬â¢s famous work, Human Family. Both the musical and literary poems acknowledge differences within mankind due to ethnicity, background, and geography, but Angelouââ¬â¢s refrain: ââ¬Åwe are more alike, my friends, than we are unalikeââ¬Â, reaffirms our humanity as a reminder of unity. Colemanââ¬â¢s work draws inspiration from French flute music blended with an underlying pentatonicism found in Asian traditions, a caravan through Middle Eastern parts of the world merging with Flamenco, and an upbeat journey southward into Africa with the sounds of Kalimba (thumb piano). Fanmi Imèn was commissioned by the National Flute Association for its 2018 High School Soloist Competition.

Carl David Hall was piccoloist of the Atlanta Symphony for 32 years and a dear friend to all his colleagues. In 1999, the NFA commissioned Martin Amlin to compose a piccolo concerto for Carl to premiere at their annual convention. Today, Amlin remembers Carl Hall with this 4-minute poem, a microcosm for flute and strings (also to be premiered at the NFA’s 2016 convention), published here in a setting for piccolo and piano. For advanced performers.

âNT 22 010 - Sophie Lacaze: La Lune dans l'Eau, for young storytelling flautist In 1993, composer Sophie Lacaze chose the translucent timbre of the flute to explore the 'mysterious origins' of vowels and their association with colours in Rimbaud's poem Voyelles (NT 14 451 Z). The composer's fascination with this age-old instrument has never ceased to grow, and was further impelled by her encounter with Pierre-Yves Artaud, to whom she dedicated Les quatre éléments and Het Lam Gods II. Sophie Lacaze has now produced a score for young storytelling flautist in La Lune dans L'eau, a study miniature initially written for saxophone students and published in the Opensax collection (AL 30 701). Written for Year 3 and up, the piece delicately interlaces music and poetry, with the musician pronouncing aloud a haiku by Ueda Chôshû (1852-1932): 'Though in a thousand shards / It is always there / The moon on water.' With a wide variety of techniques and performance indications, this volume is a veritable kaleidoscope of the flute's powers of expression, though this profusion never clouds the limpidity of a unique art: the art of simplicity.andrdquo.
