From majestic to pastoral to dance-like, Land of the Long White Cloud is Philip Sparke's representation of New Zealand. This piece is a wonderful addition to the concert band repetoire.Long before Europeans ventured out of sight of land, the bold and restless ancestors of the Maori people were making voyages of thousands of miles across the world's greatest oceans. It was around 1000 AD that they landed in New Zealand. The discovery of New Zealand is attributed in Maori tradition to Kupe and the circumstances of the landfall gave the country its Maori name. As land was approached, a long, flat volcanic cloud could be seen. Kupe's wife Hine-te-aparangi, looked to the horizon and cried out, He ao! He ao! A cloud! A cloud! The name of Aotearoa was given to the islands - The Land of the Long White Cloud. Land of the Long White Cloud was originally conceived as a brass band work as a result of a commission by the New Zealand Brass Band Association for their National Championships held in 1980 in Christchurch. This transcription by the composer was commissioned by Keith Allen and Birmingham Schools' Wind Orchestra who gave the first performance in the Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham, England on Sunday 15 May 1988.

In composing songs, which Moniuszko wrote from his youth to the end of his life, he was guided by a definite idea. He wished to present Polish society with national, Polish songs, which could occupy an important place in the everyday life of the Polish people, so displacing imported trash. In a similar way Jozef Ignacy Kraszewski, with an extensive and comprehensive series of novels, supplanted the French romance, so popular, especially with contemporary ladies. Hans Winterberg has only recently been rediscovered as one of the most important representatives of the Czech avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century. Performed but not published during his lifetime, his works were locked away after his death due to tragic circumstances and are now being published for the first time in a collaboration between the Exilarte Centre of the Vienna University of Music and Boosey and Hawkes. In contrast to his colleagues and friends Ullmann, Haas, Krása and Klein, Winterberg survived the Shoah through a series of miracles. As a student of Alexander Zemlinsky and Alois Hába, he is both a successor to Janácek and a member of the wider circle of the Second Viennese School. The Sonata for Violin and Piano, written and premièred in Prague in 1936, is one of the most important chamber music works of the pre-war period. It exhibits all the characteristics of Winterberg's personal style: a sensuality of sound grounded in French Impressionism with a simultaneous expressionist rigour of harmony, a small-scale motivic structure, a sophisticated play with polyrhythmic patterns and, especially in the last movement, a musical impetus borrowed from Czech folklore.

2011 was a disastrous year for Japan: on March 11 the northeast of the country suffered a violent earthquake, which triggered a huge tsunami and caused massive damage to people and the environment. The ensuing problems with the nuclear reactor at Fukushima only increased the misery: a black day in the country’s history…One almost inevitable consequence of such dramatic circumstances is the particular damage suffered by the cultural arts. And so it was in Japan: various high school wind orchestras in the effected areas lost their practice rooms and/or instruments. It will take a long time before the damage suffered is repaired—and it will take great effort to overcome thepsychological effects, too. Focusing on the latter, Yutada Nishida (director of The Bandwagon radio program) asked a few composers for a simple work that could be played by many orchestras. It just so happened that the Osakan Philharmonic Winds (with whom Jan Van der Roost had conducted a concert exclusively of his own works on September 25th) had had a similar idea. This concert saw the baptism of Song of Hope. This piece immediately struck a chord with musicians and audience alike: it begins bleakly in the low register and evolves to a more open, optimistic close. There really is hope for better times! 2011 was een rampzalig jaar voor Japan: op 11 maart teisterde een hevige aardbeving het noordoosten van het land, bracht een enorme tsunami teweeg en veroorzaakte zeer grote schade aan mens en natuur. In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently, the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century, was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar’s music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s death in 1984 he composed the “CeremonialMarchâ€. Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar’s catalogue of works, the characteristic “Pomp and Circumstances†marches, and decided to add his own, sixth march to the existing collection.

“In 2006 Kylie Kwong who is the ambassador for the Fair Trade Association of Australia and NZ asked me to write a piece for Fair Trade event, she asked for something earthy and poetic and she told me a lot about what Fair Trade stands for. This piece grew out of the many impressions of the stories of people growing coffee and sugar in harsh circumstances, transporting the produce on difficult roads. Since its original publication in 1971, A Community Mass has become a staple for many parishes. Due to its wide use and inclusion in various denominational hymnals, additional material and new instrumentations were periodically created by the composer. These enrichments have made A Community Mass adaptable to a variety of circumstances and forces-from cantor, assembly, and organ to performances by choir and assembly with small or large instrumental ensembles in addition to organ. Thus an ordinary setting is transformed into a festive setting in the appropriate liturgical context. The current edition contains Proulx's own alterations for incorporating the 2010 Revised Order of Mass.

Hans Winterberg's extraordinary life was written in two chapters, one Czech and one German, split right down the middle by the experience of the Shoah, which Winterberg, unlike his colleagues Ullmann, Krása, Haas and Klein, miraculously survived. In 1947, the Prague-born composer moved to Munich, where he worked for the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation. As a student of Alexander Zemlinsky and Alois Hába, he belongs both to the Czech tradition following Janácek and to the circle of the Second Viennese School. He saw himself as a bridge builder between Western and Eastern culture. The circumstances under which Winterberg was able to compose during the war years are still unclear. Although his “mixed marriage” initially saved him from deportation, he had to perform forced labour and was eventually sent to the Terezin ghetto in January 1945. The Suite for Violin and Piano was composed in 1942, the year in which both Winterberg's mother and his piano professor Thérèse Wallerstein were murdered by the Nazis. Compared to the violin sonata from 1936, the Suite is much more condensed, lasting less than seven minutes. A melody dominated by chromatic turns and expressionist harmony lend the work its melancholy character, which gives way, however, to an almost irrepressible defiance in the rhythmically percussive last movement.

While the tune is based on a traditional Czech carol, this is one of Rory Cooney’s most powerful original texts. The piece would make a stunning Communion meditation, evoking images of joy at the infant Savior’s birth, while foreshadowing his sacrifice so that we might eat of the Living Bread. The piano provides support for the choral parts, but the piece may be sung a cappella, or, if circumstances allow, the use of the optional string quartet will add to the warmth expressed in the words and harmony of the singers. The tragic circumstances surrounding the origin of the concerto are well known: Manon Gropius, the daughter of Berg's friend Alma Mahler, died of polio after the composer had written the first sketches to his violin concerto. In remembrance of her, he dedicated the work to the memory of an angel. Later, Berg decided to incorporate into the score the Bach chorale Es ist genug as a quote. He also worked on the solo part directly and intensely with the American violinist Louis Krasner, who had commissioned the work. Berg was no longer able to witness the first performance and the first edition of the concerto since he passed away in late 1935. This new edition is the first Urtext version of Berg's work, which was created in the midst of a spate of epoch-making violin concertos by Stravinsky (1931), Schoenberg (1936), Prokofiev (1937), Bartok (1938), Hindemith (1939) a. o. 'I have always had a great fondness for the works by Schumann', Aribert Reimann once said. There exists a close relationship even beyond the music: As owner of Schumann's medical records from the mental asylum in Endenich, Reimann guarded the secret of the circumstances surrounding Schumann's last weeks and death.When the musical world celebrated Reimann's 70th birthday and commemorated the 150th anniversary of Schumann's death in 2006, Reimann decided to publish the records and comment on them in his book 'Robert Schumann in Endenich' (ED 9870).This book was presented to the public on 5 May 2006 at the Schumann Festival in Dusseldorf. For this occasion, as a musical bow to Schumann, Reimann composed the string quartet Adagio which the Heine Quartet premiered.
