Gianni Schicchi is a one-act comic opera by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924). The final and most popular opera in a trio known as Il trittico (The Triptych), each one dealing with the concealment of a death, the work premiered at the Metropolitan Opera on December 14, 1918. It tells the story of four family members anxiously discussing the contents of their very recently deceased family member, Buoso Donati, only to discover to their horror that he had left everything to a monastery. Gianni Schicchi, not related to the family, arrives and concocts a scheme to have a new will written as nobody but the family knows Buoso is dead. But when the notary arrives Schicchi, pretending to be a Buoso on the mend, dictates that his house, mule, and mills should be left to Gianni Schicchi, which allows him to offer marriage between his daughter Lauretta and Donati family member Rinuccio. Lauretta's soprano aria, O mio babbino caro (Oh, my dear papa), is among the most well known in opera and is frequently sung as an encore in recitals or concerts. Dark Eyes is a well-known Russian romance song. The lyrics, written by Ukrainian poet Yevhen Hrebinka, were first published in 1843. Édouard Lalo (1823-1892) wrote Concerto for Cello in D minor a few years after the popular Symphonie espagnole in 1876 for Belgian cellist Adolphe Fischer. The following year, Fischer was the soloist for the premiere at the Cirque d'Hiver on December 9, 1877. Influenced by his Symphonie espagnole, this concerto evokes a Spanish atmosphere. At the time of its premiere, there were few serious cello concerti, leading Lalo's Concerto to serve as a catalyst for the cello to be considered a more soloistic instrument. Franz Liszt (1811-1886) started work on his CONCERTO FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA No. 2 in A major, S. 125, in 1839 and 1840. Putting it through a series of revisions, he dedicated the concerto to his student Hans von Bronsart von Schellendorf. The composer conducted the first performance in Weimar on January 7, 1857 with Bronsart as soloist. Liszt completed a 4th revision in 1861. Less virtuosic than his first piano concerto, it is played without break and serves as a masterful example of thematic transformation. Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) completed the 1st version of his Mass No. 3 in F minor in 1863, as Otto Kitzler was introducing him to the music of Richard Wagner, the composer he would emulate for the rest of his life. John Herbeck, who conducted the initial rehearsals for its premiere at the Augustinerkirch on June 16, 1872, warmly declared that it stood beside Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in greatness. Bruckner, often self-critical as a composer, went on to revise the work no less than four times until it was finally published it in 1894. More often heard today in the concert hall than in the church, the sprawling, hour-long work is admired today for its powerful directness. Leo Janácek (1854-1928) wrote a large portion of his most distinctive music late in life, following the success of a revised version of his opera Jenufa in 1916. His extensive research of the national folklore had a great impact on his work as a composer. Inspired by a military band performance in a park, the Sinfonietta opens with a military-style fanfare for brass and percussion. It received its commission from a Czech gymnastics association to celebrate the Eighth National Sokol Rally which took place in Prague in the summer of 1926. The Czech Philharmonic gave the first performance on June 26th of that year under the direction of Vaclav Talich. The inner movements provide contrasting melodic and rhythmic material, characterized by rhythmic shifts, abrupt mood changes, and fragments of folk dance. The final movement climbs through a long, intensifying sequence to reprise the opening music, now taken up by the full orchestra. The six CONCERTI ARMONICI was long thought to be the work of the violinist-impresario Carlo Ricciotti or composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, but more recent research has revealed the composer to be Unico Wilhelm van Wassenauer (1692-1766). Born into a wealthy Dutch family, the diplomat and composer founded a Collegium musicum in The Hague under the oversight of Ricciotti. Composed between 1725 and 1740, the six concertos have been falsely attributed to a variety of contemporaries, Ricciotti and Pergolesi amongst them, since its anonymous publication. Wassenauer's aristocratic background was the reason for his secretiveness. The sentiment of the time ordained that musicians belong to the lower classes. This edition of CONCERTINO No. 2 (also CONCERTO ARMONICO in G Major, CONCERTO IV, or just CONCERTINO in G), drawing from the CONCERTO ARMONICO in G Major, IUW 3, was edited by 20th century Baroque expert Fritz Rikko. Rikko spuriously attributes the work to Pergolesi. Despite Wassenauer's authorship having since been confirmed, Rikko's original editorial notes have been retained. EUGENE ONEGIN, based on a verse-novel by Alexander Pushkin, is Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) best-known opera. The story depicts the life of the titular Onegin, a Russian dandy who does not understand himself, his emotions, or the value of life, leading him to reject an impassioned declaration of love by a woman he looks down upon and instead pursue the fiancée of his friend, who he kills in a duel as a result of this pursuit. The provincial WALTZ, brought here to a higher level of sophistication by Tchaikovsky, is performed at the ball honoring Tatyana's name day at the beginning of Act II. Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote his Violin Concerto in E minor over a six-year period from 1838 to 1844 for his childhood friend, the violinist Ferdinand David, who contributed the cadenza in the version of the concerto most performed today. The concerto premiered on March 13, 1845 in Leipzig, but Mendelssohn himself was unable to conduct due to illness. Unlike most concerti of the time, Mendelssohn has the violin enter immediately without any orchestral introduction, and its cadenza is unusually placed after the development of the first movement instead of at the end of the movement. A dream inspired Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) to compose The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Kahn, based on the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The composer originally wrote it for piano in 1912. Four years later, at the encouragement of Ferruccio Busoni, he expanded it into a shimmering symphonic poem. Following the first performance in the autumn of 1919 under the direction of Pierre Monteux, it achieved great success and remains one of his most frequently-performed works today. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) composed his Piano Concerto No. 1 in 1858 and performed the work's debut in Hanover, Germany, in 1859, to mixed reviews. The work initially began as a sonata for two pianos, then a four-movement symphony. Under the counsel of friends Julius Otto Grimm and violinist Joseph Joachim, Brahms landed on a three-movement piano concerto. After its fifth performance in December 1861, with Clara Schumann as piano soloist, the work still received mixed audience reception. The idea for Totentanz, S. 126 (Dance of the Dead) was conceived by Franz Liszt (1811-1886) in 1938. Two versions were to follow, the first completed in 1853, and the second version finished in 1864. The flashy virtuosic piece for the solo piano uses the Gregorian plainchant melody Dies irae (Day of Judgement) in a set of variations. Count d'Ogny commissioned Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) to write three symphonies for the Concert de la Loge Olympique, which was then recognized as one of the finest orchestras in Europe. He completed the second of these, the SYMPHONY No. 91 in E flat major, Hob. I/91, in 1788. It received its premiere the next year in the Tuileries Palace gardens, mere months before King Louis XVI and his royal family came to live there under custody of the French Revolution. It is his last symphony to exclude trumpets and timpani, but stuffed with delicacies that would have appealed to its Parisian audience. Its graceful, ebullient character offers no hints of the hard misfortune that would soon fall on the aristocratic listeners who first enjoyed this charming work. The Voice on the Mountain was written for Mike Veak, a band director who dedicated 30 years of his life to teaching instrumental music in Lincoln, Nebraska. Nolan Schmit begins the piece with a flute solo representing a solitary voice on a mountain. The voice begins to build in strength and intensity as it travels down the mountain, is heard by others and is communicated to distant lands. Violin virtuoso and composer Niccolò Paganini's (1782-1840) Concerto for Violin No. 1 in D, Op. 6 was written between 1817 and 1818, with the premiere taking place on March 31, 1819, in Naples, Italy. The work was originally written in the key of E-flat, with the orchestral parts all written in that key, while the solo violin was written in D and instructed to play with a half-step scordatura. This was done to make some of the extremely technical solo sections possible on a single string, but it also somewhat muffled the string section of the orchestra, permitting the soloist to better standout. Born in Venezuela, but raised in Paris, Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) was drawn early in life to fashionable salons, singing his own songs from the piano. There he mingled with such luminaries as Mallarme and Proust, the latter with whom he formed an amorous relationship. After the first world war, he accepted an appointment of voice teaching at the École normale de music de Paris. His colleagues included Nadia Boulanger, Pablo Casals, and Jacques Thibaud. One of many musical works he composed for the stage during this time, Mozart, a musical comedy (comédie musicale) in 3 Acts, IRH 52, premiered at the Theatre Edouard VII in Paris on December 2, 1925. The libretto was written by Sacha Guitry for their first of two collaborations. The Mozart Overture, here edited by R. Mark Rogers, serves as a vibrant introduction to this underrepresented work. The Bennett Band Books published in four volumes starting in 1923 were used to teach the march form and style to millions of young band musicians in the middle of the twentieth century. Twelve of the legendary Henry Fillmore's tuneful band gems (written using the pseudonym Harold Bennett) have been collected together by Larry Clark to form the first volume of The New Bennett Band Books. This volume concentrates on 2/4 time and the keys of Bb major, Eb major, and Ab major. In addition, a helpful march warm-up section, composed by Larry Clark, is included to help you teach the march form and style to young students. When Max Reinhardt was engaged to direct a German language production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing at the Vienna Volksbühne in 1918, he asked Korngold to compose the incidental music. The production, under the German title Viel Lärmen um Nichts did not open until May 6, 1920 at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater. In the pit, the composer led members of the Vienna Philharmonic, performing no less than 18 pieces of music. In the meantime, due to the tardy premiere of the play, Korngold had already extracted a five-movement orchestral suite which garnered much praise when performed three months before the play's opening night. The five movements included: 1. the Overture; 2. Scene in the Bridal Chamber; 3. Holzapfel und Schlehwein (a mock-serious scene); 4. Intermezzo (Garden Scene); and 5. Hornpipe. When the play moved to Vienna's Burgtheater (more than 80 performances) and later to the Rezidenz Theater in Munich, the music continued to attract much attention. Demand for the music was such that Korngold arranged the suite into versions for violin and piano (four pieces), and for solo piano (three pieces). German composer-arranger Leo Artok (1885-1935) arranged the most popular three items (1. Hornpipe; 2. Garden Scene; and 3. In the Bridal Chamber) for small orchestra, which were then published by Schott in 1926. This newly engraved edition of the Artok arrangement, offered with a new full score for the first time, has been completed by R. Mark Rogers. Richard Strauss (1864-1949) wrote his VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D MINOR, Op. 8, between 1881 and 1882, and it remained his only foray in that genre. Composed while a teenager and still in school. While still very much a product of the Romantic era tradition, the work is not considered as distinctive as the works he would produce only a few years later, and Strauss himself later ridiculed the work. Still, with inventive and bold writing in the solo and hints of his mature harmonic style to come, there is much to enjoy in the work, including its warmth, youthful sincerity, and lyrical expression, so that it should not be dismissed as mere juvenilia, either by contemporary audiences or Strauss himself. The chamber version of the concerto was first performed in Vienna on December 5, 1882, with the dedicatee Benno Walter on the violin while Strauss played his own piano reduction. The premiere for the orchestral version would take place seven years later in Cologne on March 4, 1890, with Walter again performing the solo with an orchestra conducted by Franz Wüllner.
