Christmas hymn by James Montgomery & Henry T. Smart Larry Shackley has taken this Christmas hymn and its tune Regent Square, and done a full-bore gospel treatment, inviting everyone to Come and worship Christ, the newborn King. A solid, swinging piano introduction sets the stage for Brooklyn Tabernacle-style vocal writing, with the basses frequently involved in lively call and response with the rest of the choir. An original bridge asking the congregation, Oh, won't you come and worship? leads into the triumphant final verse that celebrates the second coming of the Messiah as well as the first.

Piece of contest (1946) by Andre Chailleux was written for the Paris Conservatoir contest. Lasting 5'25 minutes, this piece for Cornet or Bb Trumpet and Piano is difficult to play and quite slow. Starting with the Piano on four measures, this work has two distinctive periods: Slow and Allegro. The Piano plays alone during eight or ten measures to emphasise the coming back of the Cornet / Trumpet. This piece will demonstrate well the skills and technique of the player during a contest, or even a recital..

The First String Quartet completed in 1909 - a work that may almost be regarded as the precursor of the great orchestral folksong variation, 'The Peacock' - is based for the first time on elements entirely derived from folk music. The work was performed for the first time by members of the famous Waldbauer Quartet and was published in 1910. The recent publication is coming out as a volume of the series 'EMB Study Scores'.

The choirbook Women of Our World is more than a simple song collection: In easy two- to three-part arrangements for women's voices, 40 pieces in 25 different languages from more than 30 countries are gathered here. Singable transcriptions for each piece as well as pronunciation guides and translations in the appendix enable an immediate access. Introductory texts inform on the origin and cultural background of the songs; chord symbols allow an instrumental accompaniment, too. Unique for choirbooks of this kind though are the contributions from women of international origin living in Germany; they are presented in portraits and describe their personal relation to singing in a choir. Women of Our World is the result of the yearslong work of editor Hayat Chaoui with international song repertoire as choir leader, singer and consultant. An interview with Mrs. Chaoui on the origin of the edition is found on our blog (German only). This praiseworthy resource could be used to support a range of choral projects, especially perhaps where songs might usefully be taught by rote. This cantata belongs to the annual cycle Musicalisches Lob Gottes in der Gemeine des Herrn printed in 1744, from which the Biblische Spruche (see p. 12) are also taken. As with the choruses, in the arias Telemann allows for a great deal of freedom in the forces employed, whether with regard to the octave ranges of the voices, or the optional use of wind instruments doubling the strings. The allusions of the text to the coming sufferings of Jesus make this cantata suitable for use during Lent and Holy Week. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3949100.

Follow the Star, Follow the King is the journey from spiritual darkness to light, culminating in the birth of King Jesus. It is a distinctive blend of scriptures anticipating and celebrating the coming of the Christ, beloved carols, and original new music which captures the mystery and majesty of this most holy season. Combining the talents of four veteran composers, this work reflects the creativity and breadth of scope one would anticipate from these collaborators. Conceived as a flexible resource, the five sections of this work may be utilized amid multiple worship experiences during the weeks of Advent and Christmas, or they may be presented in a single service as a 25-minute work. The optional candle lighting enables a church to mark the Sundays of Advent or to highlight each movement by underscoring each designated theme. The biblically based narration serves as a cohesive link, connecting the musical sections together in an inspiring celebration of God’s great gift.
