Thanks to a stipend from his patron, the Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel, Schutz was able to pursue a three-year period of study under Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice from 1609 to 1612, which he concluded with the publication in 1611 of the madrigal collection Il Primo Libro de Madrigali. Already in this, his Opus primus, Schutz emerged as an outstanding composer: In their musical quality, the 18 five-part madrigals exceed much that was still being composed in the traditional madrigal style at the beginnning of the 17th century.

This work was composed as a commission by the Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band, to commemorate their 40th annual concert. The composition is a march-style work that begins with a chorale based on a theme from the school song—a distinctive motif that reappears in the middle section. Tetsuya Kashino, a graduate of the high school, is a band coach and has a deep friendship with the composer. Kashino named the work Scent of Spring, which reflects two distinct meanings—firstly, in Japanese, a part of the band’s own name, and also “a premiere in Spring”. Scent of Spring is a bright and optimistic piece of music, suitable to perform on various occasions.

Dit werk is geschreven in opdracht van de Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band, een schoolorkest uit Tokio, ter gelegenheid van hun veertigste jaarconcert. Deze in marsstijl geschreven compositie begint met een op een thema uit het schoollied gebaseerd koraal: een motief dat nog eens opduikt in het middengedeelte. Tetsuya Kashino, een orkestleider die zelf ook op de betreffende school heeft gezeten, is nauw bevriend met de componist: hij heeft het werk Scent of Spring gedoopt, met in zijn achterhoofd twee betekenissen: ten eerste komt deze titel in het Japans deels overeen met de orkestnaam, ook verwijst de titel naar ‘een première in de lente’. Spring has finally arrived. The days grow longer, birds prepare to nest, trees turn green and plants begin to bloom as nature wakes up from her winter sleep. This, and the fact that the composer’s third grandson was born in the spring, were the inspiration for Spring Song.

Het is voorjaar! De dagen worden langer, de vogels bouwen hun nestjes, bomen hullen zich in het groen en alle planten beginnen te bloeien. Kortom: de natuur ontwaakt uit haar winterslaap. En precies in dit jaargetijde zag ook hetderde kleinkind van de componist het levenslicht. Lente en nieuw leven: voor Jan de Haan twee prachtige inspiratiebronnen voor zijn nieuwe werk Spring Song!

Es ist Frühling. Die Tage werden länger, Vögel bauen ihre Nester, die Bäume schlagen aus und alle Pflanzen beginnen zu blühen. Kurz gesagt: Die Natur erwacht aus ihrem Winterschlaf. Der Frühling und der glückliche Umstand, dass just zu dieser Jahreszeit sein dritter Enkel das Licht der Welt erblickte inspirierte den Komponisten zu seinem Stück Spring Song.

This work for flute trio is in no way connected to the famous work of the same name by Antonio Vivaldi. In his Four Seasons, Mario Valsania sees the changing seasons from a child's point of view: Spring, out in the fresh air on abike ride, the unhurried Summer, Autumn and the new school year, and finally Winter, with its Christmas celebrations...
This is a composition in a classical style but with advanced, non-traditional harmonies. The composer's aim was to bring out the full richness of the flute's range and character - such as staccato and double-tonguing. InWinter, various traditional Christmas carols can be heard.

Dit werk voor fluittrio heeft op geen enkele manier te maken met het beroemde gelijknamige werk van Antonio Vivaldi. In zijn Four Seasons kijkt Mario Valsania naar de wisselende seizoenen vanuit het perspectief van een kind: in de lente kun jelekker naar buiten om te fietsen in de frisse lucht; de zomer is een zorgeloze periode; de herfst staat voor de start van het nieuwe schooljaar; en tot slot is er de winter, waarin onder meer het kerstfeest wordt gevierd...

Deze compositie is in klassieke stijl geschreven, maar met gebruik van vooruitstrevende, niet-traditionele harmonieën. De componist is erin geslaagd om de rijke, karakteristieke klank over het volledige register van de fluit te benutten - metmiddelen als staccato en dubbele tongslag. In het gedeelte Winter zijn enkele traditionele kerstliederen te herkennen.

Dieses Werk für Flötentrio verweist in keiner Weise auf das berühmte gleichnamige Werk von Antonio Vivaldi. In seinen Vier Jahreszeiten versucht Mario Valsania nachzuspüren, wie ein Kind die wechselnden Jahreszeiten erlebt: denFrühling, den man am liebsten an der frischen Luft und auf dem Fahrrad verbringt, den Sommer als sorglose Periode, den Herbst als Zeit des Schuljahresbeginns, und schließlich den Winter, in den Weihnachten und andere Festefallen...
Die im klassischen Stil gehaltene Komposition weist eine erweiterte, nicht traditionelle Harmonik auf. Der Komponist versuchte, den gesamten Tonumfang und charakteristische Aspekte der Flöte, wie staccato und Doppelzunge, auszunutzen. ImWinter werden einige traditionelle Weihnachtslieder zitiert.

Dans ses Four Seasons (Quatre saisons), Mario Valsania égréne le changement des saisons, vécu par unenfant : le printemps, synonyme dair frais, de liberté et de courses vélo, lété qui se vit avec un soupçon d'insouciance, lautomne qui signifie la rentrée scolaire, et finalement l'hiver, le temps des festivités de Noël.

Il sagit dune piéce composée dans un style classique présentant toutefois des harmonies et des accents surprenants. Lobjectif du compositeur était de faire ressortir toute la richesse de la fl te traversiére par des traitscaractéristiques tels que le staccato ou le double coup de langue. Dans le quatriéme mouvement, Winter, plusieurs chants de Noël traditionnels peuvent être entendus.
