The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment. Gatti, a contemporary companion of Leopold and W. A. Mozart, composed this Concertone, that is published here for the first time, in 1769 for the opening of the Teatro Bibiena in Mantua, where the young Mozart, only five weeks later, gave his second, well-received concert in Italy. Not only the charming solos (apart from the two violins there is also a cello and an oboe) remind us of Mozart's composition of the same name that was composed four years later (KV190). Score and parts available separately - see item CA.9710300.

The Advent cantata Machet die Tore weit has long been one of the most frequently performed of Telemann's sacred works. Among the copies of this cantata which have been handed down is a copy by J. S. Bach which bears testimony to the high respect he paid to his then more celebrated colleague from Hamburg: It is a copy of the score in the hand of the Thomaskantor which was made for a performance in Leipzig on Avent Sunday in 1734 (therefore during the same period as the first performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio). Of the four solo singers the soprano and bass, each of whom has an aria, are indispensable. The brief alto solos in the opening chorus can be sung by a member of the choir, and the tenor recitative can be sung by the soprano soloist. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.3910500.

While the solos in earlier masses form an integral part of the structure of the entire work, Christian Bach made the solo sections independent in the sense of the Neopolitan school. The orchestra is occupied with longer preludes and rustling figures. In the eleven movements, Bach was able to unite the compositional techniques and expressivity of the Baroque with the beautiful sound of an Italian cantilena. From the forward by Traugott Fedtke. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3810900.

Following sensationally acclaimed premiere performances in Vienna, The Creation was published in several languages and by various publishing houses, including Breitkopf & Hartel in Leipzig. We now know that a continuo instrument was used for Haydn's oratorio as premiered in Vienna. The supplementary continuo part enables an historically accurate reproduction for the first time: the harpsichord (and, increasingly, the pianoforte) fulfilled the important continuo function in the orchestras of the time.In the late 18th century, Joseph Haydn composed a choral work - The Creation - which set the standard for the sacred oratorio genre that stood long after the Viennese classical era and far beyond the boundaries of the German linguistic sphere.

Dvorak's Requiem is one of the Czech composer's great sacred works and one of the greatest Requiem settings in music history.
ISBN 9790004341834. 10 x 12.5 inches.
The profound impression it makes on us is due in part to the sequence of variations on a death motif that seems to have been borrowed from the beginning of the second Kyrie from Bach's Mass in B minor. Written in 1890, it was commissioned by the publisher Novello for the Birmingham Music Festival and premiered there under the direction of the composer on 9 October 1891. For this performance, Dvorak used a copy of the score which he had personally examined and which later served as the engraver's copy. The Dvorak scholar Klaus Doge succeeded in tracking down its location and evaluating this important source for the first time. It contains the Fassung letzter Hand and, moreover, offers valuable insights into Dvorak's conducting workshop. It served as the principal source for the Breitkopf Urtext edition.Dvorak's Requiem is one of the Czech composer's great sacred works and one of the greatest Requiem settings in music history.
