For SATB and piano, this original setting of Maya Angelou's poem, Prayer is in a soulful 6/8. (The accompaniment occasionally quotes Lift Every Voice and Sing, which gives you an idea of the tempo and feeling.) Beginning with a series of thanks, the piece has a slower middle section with a series of petitions, beginning, For those who have no voice, we ask you to speak. Then the music of the first section reappears and the piece closes with a prayer for peace. This is an unusual and powerful musical offering for any occasion focusing on justice and social concerns.

This early American folk song is given a rollicking setting which is mostly SATB but occasionally has the women and the men dividing into four parts. The heritage of the tune is evident in some cadences that have a sort of shape-note feel to them. Fun to sing and hear.

St. Ignatius of Loyolaââ¬â¢s powerful prayer of surrender, set here in Latin, begins, ââ¬ÅReceive, O Lord, all my liberty. Take my memory, understanding, and entire will.ââ¬Â Set for SATB and piano, the music is powerful and assured. The traditional English carol tune is embellished with occasional quotes of the SUSSEX CAROL. This bright and joyful setting for Christmastide establishes the melody in unison women’s voices, then dividing into two parts before developing further into a four-part, SATB voicing by the end of the first verse. Throughout the piece, the textures continue to vary, complementing the playful dance of the quick 6/8 rhythms, instilling a sense of wonder and delight.

In this clever processional, Alan incorporates the Trumpet Voluntary .by Jeremiah Clarke into a pastorally useful processional for weddings or anniversary celebrations. The alternate ornamented trumpet line adds to the appeal of this fine setting. The simple assembly line is well within the reach of the occasional‚ assembly, such as those who gather at weddings or anniversary celebrations.

An original gospel song straight from the vibrant worship of the Black church. The beauty of this edition for choirs who desire to occasionally sing gospel but lack the intuitive sense of the style, is that every note is on the page. Sing what's there and you've arrived!

Next to the Stabat Mater, the Petite Messe solennelle of 1863 is Rossini's second extensive sacred composition. Ostensibly, the work was an occasional piece, written for the dedication of a private chapel for the once well-to-do Parisian nobility. This explains the reduced instrumental accompaniment for two pianos and harmonium. Of course this instrumental garb, reminiscent of decent, elevated salon music, produces an unmistakable timbre which through its typical Rossini rhythm obtains an additional flair. These psalm settings are in the tradition of classical vocal polyphony as practiced in the modified a cappella style of the 17 th century (stylus gravis). Characteristic of this style is the continuo line, which generally doubles the vocal bass, only occasionally functioning independently. Despite its closeness to the tradition of the a-cappella style, Carissimi proves in this psalm to be a master of the artistic expression of words, which characterizes his music in the concertante style. This art is revealed here primarily in the rhythmically, highly differentiated diction of the words, which essentially distinguishes it from the flowing style of Palestrina. Score available separately - see item CA.2740100.

The cantata Nun danket alle Gott (Now thank we all our God) BWV 192 is based on the text of the well-known hymn. It is therefore one of a small number of chorale cantatas which contain no free poetic texts. Correspondingly, there are no recitatives either. It has only recently been assumed that this three-movement work was not intended for Leipzig, but was actually written in 1730 for Bach's prestigious position as Kapellmeister of Saxe-Weissenfels. The court of Duke Christian enjoyed the its sojourn in the newly-renovated castle of its secondary residence in Sangerhausen and, at Trinity, in the court church, celebrated the anniversary of its consecration with festive music. Bach evidently occasionally contributed to this. The work does not survive complete. Even in the 18th century a full score evidently no longer existed, just a set of parts, the tenor part of which is entirely missing. For the new edition the missing part has been reconstructed by Detlev Schulten (Leipzig). Score and part available separately - see item CA.3119200.

The Complete Vocal Works Johann Pachelbel is known today as a composer of organ music and of a world-famous instrumental canon which frequently features in concert programmes and recording catalogues. However, the same can be said of only a few of his vocal compositions. At most, the motets appear occasionally in church music repertoire. Pachelbel’s arias, vocal concerti and large-scale Magnificats have received little attention up to now. Church musicians and musicologists have long wished for a critical edition of these important works, which survive in Pachelbel’s manuscript and were largely composed in his main places of work, Erfurt and Nuremberg . As always with such ventures, new discoveries are to be expected regarding the body of works, source material and the context of the works. This concerns not only beautiful music, but rather a deepening of our understanding of Pachelbel as a key figure between southern and central German traditions, and the recognition of an oeuvre which has all too often been pushed into the shadows by the mighty Bach. The Critical Edition The edition aims to make available all of Johann Pachelbel’s surviving vocal works in the best possible form. It is edited by the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Institut für Kirchenmusik at the Kunstuniversität Graz. Two volumes per year are planned. As a chronological order is not possible in many cases, the individual works have been arranged according to scoring within their groups. Fragments and works where Johann Pachelbel’s authorship is doubtful appear at the end of the respective group. Each volume includes an introduction (Ger/Eng) and a Critical Commentary (Ger). Format 25.5 x 32.5 cm; cloth-bound
