Matsushita has conceived his setting of the Pentecost sequence entirely in the Renaissance polychoral tradition. He employs the full choir (within individual choirs divisi passages also occasionally occur) solely for magnificent sounding climaxes at conclusions, prior to these occurrences he repeatedly combines groups of voices or he allows individual choirs to sing, effectively, in alternation. This type of reduction is even carried over to quasi Gregorian passages sung by one voice in unison. The piece is tonal throughout, with occasional diatonic seasoning. The consistently homophonic setting is oriented towards the declamation of the Latin text. Melodically it is in the style of modal, Gregorian structures, without quoting the well-known sequence. A fast, rhythmically syncopated declamatory section introduces, the dramaturgically appropriate climax to the solemn conclusion, which, molto legato, returns once again with large upward swings to the text of the first strophe. Matsushita writes in a comfortable vocal range so that the work can be sung, at the same time, in both a relaxed and grandiose manner. For large choirs, even for oratorio choirs with only limited experience in a cappella singing, this piece is aptly suited for performance and the music is both grateful and brings much joy for singers.

Rigwreck sets a text by poet Pierre Joris on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Frequent vocal divisions, a wide range of dynamic expression, spoken lines, and powerful word-painting highlight the poem's emphasis on humanity's responsibility for the natural world and make this piece an exciting challenge for choirs.

The “Hallelujah†chorus is the final movement of part two of Handel’s Messiah, the part that comments on Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. The text of the chorus, assembled from Biblical passages by the oratorio’s librettist, Charles Jennens, is from Revelation 19:6, 11:15, and 19:16: “Hallelujah, for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever. KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.†This edition has been prepared from the first published score in 1767, with comparisons to Handel’s autograph manuscript now housed in the British Museum. The text has been reproduced here without alterations. However, the beamings of the vocal parts have been modernized for ease of reading (the original material has flags instead of beams for every separate syllable). The piano accompaniment is a reduction of the orchestral material: the first and second violin parts are represented in the upper staff, with only occasional inclusion of the viola, trumpet, and timpani parts, the basso continuo, in its original form, is in the bottom staff. The GIA Historical Music Series edited by Dennis Shrock, presents repertoire suitable for performance by public school, college and university, church, and community ensembles, with the purpose of making available to today’s conductors lesser-known and previously difficult-to-procure historical masterpieces. The music, drawn from the Renaissance through the Romantic eras, is in performance editions based on the most current and rigorous scholarly research. The musical scores reflect original intent of notation, with all editorial markings and emendations clearly identified as such. In addition, preface material accompanying the music contains literal translations of foreign language texts and information regarding the lives of the composers, genres, and relevant performance practices. Dennis Shrock is Director of Choral Activities at Texas Christian University. He has been called one of the top choral scholars in the United States and has received a number of awards for his work. He received a bachelor's degree in music education from Westminster Choir College and both master's and doctoral degrees in choral conducting from Indiana University.

Written for the Pembroke College Chapel Choir in November 2022, Drop down, ye heavens is a setting of the refrain and final stanza of the Advent Prose, itself based on various portions of the Book of Isaiah. An incessant ostinato figure on the organ accompanies rich homophony in the mixed chorus (with occasional divisi), creating a sense of tension and mystery. The ostinato develops as the piece builds to its climactic phrase: 'I have blotted out as a thick cloud thy transgressions'. Here the ostinato ceases and the voices break free. However, it soon returns and the voices hush: 'Fear not, for I will save thee'. The return of the refrain text heralds a second climax ('let the skies poor down') when the ostinato and vivid harmonies modulate before a soft and content close.

This is the kind of piece that might sound more difficult than it is. Michael Trotta employs an economy of choral writing: The SATB parts are sometimes unison, move often by steps, are repeated in the outer sections, and have only occasional divisi in the treble voices. The text is an innovative combination of Old and New Testament passages, put in a question-and-answer format with the question sung in a subdued matter and the answer intensifying in range, complexity, and volume. The piano and flute parts flow more quickly than the voices—save for a short, contrasting middle section—and provide an underlying momentum to this expressive work. Duration: 4:30.

Predating the well-known Bethlehem Down by just a few years, As dew in Aprylle is one of several choral works by Warlock to draw on texts from the 15th century Sloane Manuscript, yet musically this work demonstrates a similar mastery of part writing and fondness for chromatic harmonic language. First published on 12th June, 1924, following a period of unavailability this is now restored to the catalogue in a newly-prepared edition. For unaccompanied mixed voices, with occasional divisi.

This regal a cappella Latin setting begins on a unison pitch that quickly blossoms into resplendent four-part harmony. Sensible voice leading and conservative intervals encourage good intonation even when we briefly shift to the relative minor key. Short in length but packed with worthwhile teaching moments, including occasional optional divisi in both voicings.

Choral settings of 'Lift up your heads, O ye gates' from Psalm 24 are numerous, from that of the sixteenth-century Geneva Psalter of Claude Goudimel to the present day. Unsurprisingly so, as the text has many appropriate liturgical applications. In this jubilant setting, The King of Glory, Sarah Rodgers has provided church choirs of all abilities with a truly celebratory anthem that in its writing for SATB displays many elements of choral craft, from unison and two-part textures to a satisfyingly contrapuntal full harmony. The driving, rhythmic figure in the organ accompaniment underpins and uplifts the voices, and occasional harmonic juxtapositions add delightfully unexpected moments of colour. Importantly, with a proficient organist, the anthem can be prepared with just one or two rehearsals. It is certain to be of great appeal both to choirs and to congregations.

This brief a cappella choral miniature is a reflection on the Transfiguration of the Lord, a Scripture passage observed by many Christian traditions just prior to or during the season of Lent (as well as on the Feast of the Transfiguration, August 6). Set in a largely homophonic texture, the piece sparkles with occasional unexpected and delightful chords highlighting the wonder of the Transfiguration.
