This stunningly expressive work was commissioned for a vast number of high school choir programs forced to cancel concerts due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Inspiring and reflective, the rich harmonies capture both a sense of poignancy and hope. An optional descant soars above the choir, adding a sense of expansiveness: Your voice brings hope! Over 200 singers from five high schools coast to coast learned the piece separately using part-dominant tracks and recorded their performances for the virtual choir premiere.

Bach's Cantata BWV 69a of 1723, which has remained largely unknown to the present day, is now available for the first time in a practical edition with this Carus publication. It has been unjustly neglected as it was overshadowed by the Cantata BWV 69 of the same name, a piece which Bach reworked to celebrate the inauguration of Leipzig Town Council in 1748. On that occasion Bach re-used the parts from 1723 for simplicity, and adapted them for the new use by means of cuts, alterations, and additions - something which certainly did not mean that he rejected the 1723 version. This version can readily be recovered from the parts of 1723, if we explore beyond the alterations of 1748. With its rich wind instruments and great opening chorus, the 1723 cantata is in no way inferior to the later festive music in terms of musical splendor. The text takes the Gospel reading about the healing of the deaf and dumb man as a reason for praise and thanks for God's good deeds. In contrast to the later version, in which God is thanked for the wisdom of the Leipzig authorities, the original version of 1723 is free of such contemporary references, and is suitable for use in worship and concerts in many different ways. Louis Spohr's only Mass is among the most important works of post-classical church music. In this a cappella Mass Spohr brought together harmoniously and with great skill the then current interest in baroque constructional techniques and the quest for an individual, contemporary style of composition. The result is a work which sometimes suggests Mendelssohn, and which offers an accomplished choir impressive music both for church services and for concerts. Score available separately - see item CA.9124000.

During the late 17th century English musicians celebrated each year on 22 November the feast of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, with special concerts and church services. With his Ode for St. Cecilia's Day Handel rejuvenated the tradition of this festival on St. Cecilia's Day in 1732. This so-called little St. Cecilia Ode is a musically joyful glorification of the power of music: two festive choruses frame five charming arias in each of which a solo instrument is used for contrasting effect in the baroque manner. Handel allows the soloists a wealth of freedom to improvise and to display their skills. This is especially the case for the organ, which was his favorite instrument. Based on a classic Martin Luther text, this Christmas anthem contains the angel's announcement of the Savior's birth in a manger and His birth within our hearts. Russell Nagy supports the words with a joyful, exuberant melody, a driving, rhythmic accompaniment and a lovely, contrasting B theme. This newly composed melody provides a nice contrast to the typical carol settings that populate so many Christmas concerts and services. A full score and orchestral accompaniment (JH551A) is available.

Since the release of his first two compositions, works by the young American Daniel Elder have won many prizes. Elder has set an erotic and sensuous text from the Song of Songs in this composition for four-part choir (without divisi). Although the metaphor of the uniqueness of the beloved like an apple tree between the trees in a forest has often been set, Elder succeeds in finding a completely individual, tender musical language for this text. The work is also easy for amateur choirs to sing: all the parts have cantabile lines in comfortable registers. This could become a very popular piece for church choirs to sing at weddings as well as in concerts. Elder creates a peaceful, intimate atmosphere, with vocal parts which are independent, singable and linear, frequently writing in passages with thirds or sixths. The setting is harmonic in style. However, the piece never descends into saccharine or kitsch, as there are brief flashes of dissonance, sparingly used unexpected alterations, and diminished chords.

The accompaniment for this setting of the familiar American folk melody has a classical piano feel. And works beautifully with harpsichord. The spiritual is designed to flow along over the accompaniment without too much effort. The notes must be well in place before adding the keyboard. This anthem can be sung in church services, school or church concerts or with college groups. It also makes a very nice ensemble selection.
