Claude Debussy's romance L'ame evaporee et souffrante is a setting of Paul Bourget's Romance from the collection Les aveux (1882). The song was first published in 1891 with Les cloches, but had probably been composed earlier in 1885. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).

Heinrich Poos is not the first composer inspired by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock's poem 'Die Auferstehung', as even Gustav Mahler had already used these verses in the fifth movement of his Second Symphony 'Auferstehung'. Mahler was inspired to use a choral movement at the end of his symphony at the funeral of the conductor Hans von Bülow where a choir sang a chorale based on said text by Klopstock. Heinrich Poos wrote his deeply moving choral piece in remembrance of the organist Hubert Schoonbrodt.

A prevailing melancholy mood is characteristic of Theophile Gautier's (1811-1872) poetry; a melancholy mood which inspired composers such as Hector Berlioz and Gabriel Faure to compose settings. Tristesse (Sadness) is taken from the 1838 collection La Comedie de la Mort (The Comedy of Death). With over 50 poems this is regarded as Gautier's major Romantic work. Although the narrator in the poem is conscious of the joy and zest for life of spring coming into bloom around him, he cannot share this: Helas! j'ai dans le coeur une tristesse affreuse. (Alas, in my heart I bear a terrible grief.). Faure's setting portrays this effect less as a dramatic sigh than a melancholic unworldliness with peaceful piano accompaniment in the minor key. “The Listening,” written by Grammy-nominated composer Cheryl B. Engelhardt in December 2017 for VOICES 21C under the artistic direction of André de Quadros, draws its inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s impactful 1967 speech, “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence.” This dynamic, emotion-filled piece expresses King's call to end societal silence. The rhythmic elements in the piece are derived from the poetic nature of King's speech. The inclusion of a children's choir, inspired by the Parkland school shooting and subsequent protests, symbolizes the disruption of childhood peace by violence. Notably, the virtual collaboration, featuring Donzaleigh Abernathy, Dr. King's goddaughter, emphasizes the song's contemporary relevance in addressing social issues, and was featured in PEOPLE. The Complete Vocal Works Johann Pachelbel is known today as a composer of organ music and of a world-famous instrumental canon which frequently features in concert programmes and recording catalogues. However, the same can be said of only a few of his vocal compositions. At most, the motets appear occasionally in church music repertoire. Pachelbelâ??s arias, vocal concerti and large-scale Magnificats have received little attention up to now. Church musicians and musicologists have long wished for a critical edition of these important works, which survive in Pachelbelâ??s manuscript and were largely composed in his main places of work, Erfurt and Nuremberg . As always with such ventures, new discoveries are to be expected regarding the body of works, source material and the context of the works. This concerns not only beautiful music, but rather a deepening of our understanding of Pachelbel as a key figure between southern and central German traditions, and the recognition of an oeuvre which has all too often been pushed into the shadows by the mighty Bach. The Critical Edition The edition aims to make available all of Johann Pachelbelâ??s surviving vocal works in the best possible form. It is edited by the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Institut für Kirchenmusik at the Kunstuniversität Graz. Two volumes per year are planned. As a chronological order is not possible in many cases, the individual works have been arranged according to scoring within their groups. Fragments and works where Johann Pachelbelâ??s authorship is doubtful appear at the end of the respective group. Each volume includes an introduction (Ger/Eng) and a Critical Commentary (Ger).
