It was first performed in October 1997 in Glasgow by Lisa Tyrrell (soprano), Margaret McDonald (mezzo soprano), Neil Mackie (tenor) and David Wilson-Johnson (baritone), the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus (chorus master Ben Parry) and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by the composer. The lyrics to Der Mond ist aufgegangen (The Moon Is Risen) come from Matthias Claudius, one of Germany’s best-known poets. The 1779 poem with the original title Abendlied (Evening song) was set to music by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz and has become perhaps the most famous Abendlied in the German-speaking world. Johann de Haan has created a delightful arrangement of this poignant melody. The wind orchestra can optionally be accompanied by a choir (Dutch and German texts are provided).

De tekst van het lied Der Mond ist aufgegangen is van de hand van Matthias Claudius, een bekende Duitse dichter. Het gedicht komt uit 1779 en had oorspronkelijk de titel Abendlied. Johann Abraham Peter Schulz zette hetop muziek. Daarmee werd het een van de bekendste avondliederen in het Duitstalige gebied. Jacob de Haan maakte een fraaie bewerking van deze rustige melodie.
