In writing these arrangements for clarinet quartet, Frank Reinshagen has created little masterpieces, which broaden the rhythmical and harmonic context of the original tunes in an interesting manner without detracting from their archaic and melancholic character. These original tunes are---in a direct or wider sense---of Celtic origin. In other words, they have been borrowed from the Irish, Scottish, and Gaelic musical tradition. These through-composed arrangements are rather easy to perform from the rhythmical and technical point of view. Yet, they are quite demanding in respect of the key they are written in, their intonation, and especially, their interpretation. Their different instrumentations are fully compatible with each other and, due to their overall structure, they are also suitable to be played with multi-scored parts. Annotation on Aignish on the Machair: The arrangement of Aignish on the Machair, Folksong from The Hebrides, illustrates, above all, the melancholic character inherent in the harmonies of the original tune. A short rubato passage is followed by several variations over the flowing melody in 3/4-time. The short triplet passages embedded in these variations are quite demanding from the technical point of view; considering the key they are written in, however, these passages are not too difficult to play.

For this arrangement, the key D minor, which is one whole tone lower than the original, has been chosen to make sure that the piece is playable, especially for a clarinet quartet.

The arrangement conveys the impression of a vigorous forward motion created by a recurring and changing riff. Although it is written in a somewhat more difficult key (E minor), it is not too exacting from the technical point of view.

This suite is drawn from the composer's new score for the vintage 1928 silent comedy of the same name starring Charlie Bowers. The original film score runs 20 minutes and is scored for piccolo, sopranino recorder, 2 soprano recorders, ocarina, oboe, English horn, Eb clarinet, Bb clarinet, 2 bass clarinets, contrabass clarinet, banjo, slide whistle, saw, glockenspiel, percussion, toy piano, 3 melodicas, accordion, and piano. Here it has been pared down to 11 minutes and rescored for clarinet quartet. Synopsis of the wonderfully weird film: Scotland Yard detective Charley MacNeesha carries his constant companion MacGregor--who is either a hairy insect or a buggy-looking mouse--in a matchbox. The pair travels to New York to solve the case of the Fuzz-Faced Phantom who causes full-grown chickens to hatch from eggs, pots to rain from the ceiling, and pants to dance of their own volition in a surrealist comedy that anticipated Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel's An Andalusian Dog by more than a year.

Drummer Dances is based primarily on rhythms from two famous drum solos. The first 30 bars take the rhythms from Max Roach's solo in 'Delilah Dances', as recorded on the Clifford Brown and Max Roach album. The music develops further using the four bar drum breaks from the same composition. Elvin Jones' drum solo 'Monks Dream' is the other rhythmical source material in this piece. I use 32 bars of this solo in a more linear development. Two distinct melodies are heard throughout this piece, they appear in different variations within the various rhythms the two drum solos provide.
