With its lyrical-pastoral mood, his Missa Sancti Alberti contrasts with his large-scale mass settings; in structure, extent, and orchestration it recalls Franz Schubert's well-known Mass in G major. Apart from two solo quartets which can be performed by soloists from the choir) the chorus is the main carrier of the musical action; the concise setting of the mass text is mainly set homophonically. Starting with a basic string group, the orchestra can be expanded ad libitum by the addition of two oboes, two bassoons, two trumpets, and timpani, enabling the work to be presented in its masterly orchestration.

The Mass in B flat major by Joseph Haydn is known under the name “Theresienmesse.” The reason for this epithet has to this day not been clarified, but it could have to do with a performance of this Mass in Vienna in May 1800, probably in the presence of the Empress Marie Therese. Compared with Haydn’s last two masses and the large oratorios, the relatively modest orchestral scoring of the Theresienmesse is notable (for two clarinets, two trumpets with timpani, strings and organ continuo). Thus the Mass is also easily performable in those churches where music programs have only modest means at their disposal - and at the same they can have this treasure from the late Viennese classical period. The Missa Beatissimae Virginis Maria was composed ca. 1758-1760, between the end of his tenure as a singer in the choir of St. Stephen's in Vienna and the beginning of his first position as violinist and music director for the Bishop of Grosswardein. The scoring of SATB (for soli as well as choir) and church trio was augmented by two trumpets (clarini) and timpani, as well as two trombones. The latter instruments double the alto and tenor voices in tutti passages but in the Et incarnatus est they are also employed in an obbligato role. On the one hand, as an early work this Mass is in the style of the festive baroque tradition, as practiced in south-German regions until the middle of the eighteenth century; on the other hand it already shows the subjective inspiration which distinguished it from many of the mass settings by Haydn's contemporaries.
