Aribert Reimann's idea to arrange the lieder of Franz Liszt for baritone and string quartet goes back to his collaboration with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, recording some of these lieder for the German broadcasting company formerly known as Sender Freies Berlin (SFB). Since then, Reimann has continued to be fascinated by Liszt's thrilling harmony and unconventional treatment of the voice. Here, he has compiled a cycle containing seven lieder from Liszt's middle and late periods, arranged so that each song is the logical continuation of its predecessor. Liszt's fundamental harmony has been retained, but the registers have been altered to such an extent that they appear in a completely new light.

Juli 2006.

Night-like sounds are explored in a variety of ways in the three parts of this wide-ranging scene. Ornamental and playful, the piano entwines with the singing voice in the first part. In the recitative-like second part, the grace and grandeur of Seraphim manifestations are derived from the sound of plucked piano strings. The third part is characterized by the death knell: 'voidward from the adoring waste of souls'.

'I have always had a great fondness for the works by Schumann', Aribert Reimann once said. There exists a close relationship even beyond the music: As owner of Schumann's medical records from the mental asylum in Endenich, Reimann guarded the secret of the circumstances surrounding Schumann's last weeks and death. When the musical world celebrated Reimann's 70th birthday and commemorated the 150th anniversary of Schumann's death in 2006, Reimann decided to publish the records and comment on them in his book 'Robert Schumann in Endenich' (ED 9870).This book was presented to the public on 5 May 2006 at the Schumann Festival in Dusseldorf. For this occasion, as a musical bow to Schumann, Reimann composed the string quartet Adagio which the Heine Quartet premiered. Adagio is based on both Schumann's Endenich chorales 'Wenn mein Stundlein vorhanden ist' and 'Stark und Mittler, dein sind wir'.

SYNOPSIS Aribert Reimann's 'Trilogie lyrique' is based on three plays by Maurice Maeterlinck: In L'Intruse, a family is sitting at the table with their blind grandfather. They are waiting for the doctor to arrive and tend to his daughter who is lying ill in bed after having given birth: her new-born son has not yet made a single sound. The old man senses that something is wrong due to the uneasy atmosphere in the room. Who is sitting in our midst? he asks. He is the only one who cansee the presence of death. Interieur: Once again a family is gathered round the table in the evening, but this time we observe the action from outside, looking through the window with the grandfather and a stranger: no sound can be heard. Outside the house, the stranger reports that the eldest daughter has drowned and that he has pulled her out of the river. Although the corpse is already being carried through the village to the family, the grandfather cannot bring himself to destroy this idyll. La Mort de Tintagiles: The young Tintagiles is told a story about a mysterious castle and the aged queen who has all potential heirsto the throne murdered. His siblings sense that Tintagiles has been summoned to the castle to be murdered, but nobody openly expresses this fact. It is the sinister messengers of death from the interludes, now visible as the queens servants, who ful?l her demand and snatch the sleeping boy from his sisters'arms. Commentary 'In comparison with his Medea for example with its stormy outbreaks of emotion and violence, Reimann's score is worked in an impressive refinement of sound. It begins with rumbling, hesitating and expressive music in the first section, demanding highly ingenious sound effects from the lower strings including tapping and faltering glissandos in its noisy expression of mortal fear. Inthe second part, the woodwind formation plays at times almost in chamber music fashion and is then suddenly painfully shrill. The third part luxuriates and rages in its rich, full orchestration. The manner in which Reimann displays his mastery in textural shading, the invention of sounds welling up and fading away, the rhythmic and melodic capacity of suffering and the music's inner violence are all utterly compelling.'(Wolfgang Schreiber, Opernwelt, November 2017).

This cycle arranged by Aribert Reimann of eight Lieder by Mendelssohn contains well-known items like: 'Leise zieht durch mein Gemut' and 'Auf Flugeln des Gesangs'. The songs are joined to each other by specially composed intermezzi which attempt - with refer-ence to the thematic material of the songs - to re-interpret Mendelssohn's idiom for our time. '... oder soll es Tod bedeuten' ist the final work in Reimann's series of adaptions of 19th-century songs for voice and string quartet. Franz Schubert's 'Mignon' (ED 8466) has already been published. All these cycles have been recorded by Juliane Banse and the Cherubini Quartet and are available on CD (TUD 7063).

This most frequently played orchestral work by Aribert Reimann quotes from and makes use of Robert Schumann's last finished composition, the so-called 'Geistervariationen' [Ghost Variations] in E flat major for piano from 1854, composed shortly before Schumann's suicide attempt. Reflecting on Schumann's subsequent life in Endenich, Reimann leaves the lyrical character of the original unchanged. But the breaking up of the theme into the third, fifth and seventh fragments symbolizes the transition from dreamy imagination to sickly brooding.

In these lieder, Robert Schumann seems to mirror his life full of crises. The composition coincides with the first signs of his illness. The picture of the drowning Ophelia evoked in the first chant conjures up the image of his suicide attempt three years later. Aribert Reimann's transcription seems to be opposed to Schumann's endeavours to make stronger use of 'the development of the accompanying instrument, the piano'. On the other hand, the complete integration of the vocal part in the musical setting of the string quartet confirms Schumann's assessment that the singing voice alone cannot 'express everything; apart from the expression of the whole, even subtle nuances of the poem shall become apparent'. These transcriptions show Reimann's sense of timbre and his many years of experience as a lied accompanist.

Twelve symphonic cellos form the string group in Aribert Reimann's opera The House of Bernarda Alba, which earned the distinction of Best first performance of the year 2000. Solo II may be seen as an echo of the operatic work for chamber ensemble. Composed for the Emanuel Feuermann Grand Prix, this piece full of tensions calls for a great breadth of technique from the player. Rapid runs and repetitions are required, in addition to polyphonic playing and achieving a balance of sound with numerous sul ponticello effects.

German and French fragments by Rilke from the years 1911 to 1921 form the basis of the text of this composition. Reimann sees Rilke in affinity with Kafka. The tonal language is not lost in dreams, as is often the case in Rilke settings, but dramatic and confrontational, culminating in the percussive hammering of the piano at the text passage: 'with two faces on the two fists'.
