Written by Ferdinand Gillet, a brilliant Oboe professor, this Twenty-minute study is a set of daily exercises for Oboe players. Each exercise is a bit less than a page length and focuses on fundamentals such as trills, arpeggios, register changes in major and minor keys, velocity and most difficult intervals. This set of exercises would definitely benefit upper intermediate/advanced Oboists, and is a really good method to increase technical skills. Ferdinand Gillet (1882-1980) was also the main soloist at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He also wrote a method called studies for the advanced teaching of the Oboe and Exercises for advanced Oboe technique.

This inspired anthem displays the melodic gifts of Richard Busch as well as his keen sensitivity to text. The text itself is from John Henry Newman and asks God for a holy rest when the day is done. The music supports the varied emotions of the text in both quietude and agitation with a switch from C major to E major. The four part writing in the central section is challenging in the harmonic changes yet gratifying in the use of the entire vocal range. The piece ends in the same quiet spirit in which it began. Choirs of more advanced skills will enjoy this addition to the anthem repertoire for Evensong.

In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor.
