Lofty musical aspirations are met and surpassed in this Psalm setting, which is the next installment in the composer's exploration of the Psalter. Modern melody meets classic text to celebrate the creative power of God in a sacred tone poem filled with fascinating sonic moments. Lush and expressive, the opening is a soundtrack of praise. Later the piece recounts the days of creation and the unfolding of the universe while counterpointing with the Latin phrase, Cantate Dominum. This is a stunning choral moment that builds intensity to a rhapsodic melody soaring to dizzying heights. This significant anthem ends quiescently with a final affirming Amen. The work of Paul Hindemith is encyclopedic in nature. From the outset, he worked in all musical genres and devised several of his musical ideas and projects not as individual, self-contained works but as work cycles with different functional relationships. These contrasting pieces complement each other if experienced as part of the overall structure. Hindemith himself not only wanted a complete edition of his collected works but had begun planning it; at his death he left a detailed list of Unpublished pieces for an eventual complete edition. The Complete Works contain all finished works in all extant versions, newly engraved for the edition. Sketches and fragments are published in appendices of the relevant volume, and are evaluated in the Introduction and Critical Commentary by the respective volume editor. Each volume contains a preface by the editorial directors and an introduction by the volume editor, delineating the genesis and performance history of the work, with authentic performance instructions, an evaluation of extant recordings by Paul Hindemith himself and a Critical Commentary. The Complete Works of Paul Hindemith are thus presented in a critical, scholarly edition which is equally appropriate for study and performance. Hindemith researchers will welcome the numerous first publications of works by the composer, and practical musicians will appreciate the newly prepared, philologically ordered performance material.

The history of the genesis of the Requiem is entwined with legends and anecdotes. The burdens of the composition and performance of La Clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberflote, and an acute infection led to the collapse and death of the composer following a short illness. Mozart left his wife in considerable debt. Constanze therefore turned to Mozart's friends, asking them to complete the fragment. After two failed attempts, the task passed to Mozart's pupil Franz Xaver Sussmayr, who completed the Requiem in the form known today, using working materials that are no longer extant, and perhaps verbal instructions from the composer. Today the Sussmayr version is still the most well known, and it is doubtless the one with the closest historical ties to Mozart. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.5162600.

The present edition is based on all relevant sources. The preface sketches the work's genesis from the moment of its conception in Rome in late December 1879 (Yesterday, out in the streets, I heard a wonderful folksong that I will most certainly make use of.) to the first reviews, in which Tchaikovsky was accused of triviality and of having made an extremely unfortunate choice of themes. Yet this did nothing to hamper the worldwide success of the work, and Tchaikovsky's composer colleagues also culled ideas from it: a few years later, Tchaikovsky himself was the dedicatee of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol. This volume completes Henle's urtext series of Joseph Haydn's three piano concertos. Written in or around 1765, the delightful first concerto is ideally suited for playing at home, for the relatively undemanding part for piano (or harpsichord) is accompanied merely by a string quartet. This edition draws on the musical text in our complete edition of Haydn's works, guaranteeing an urtext of the finest quality.

When we think of the cello, we automatically think of Bach’s immortal cello suites. They are the very core of cello literature, their timeless beauty accompanying cellists from their student years throughout the height of their professional careers.Considering the works’ significance, the great number of editions in existence is not surprising. However, the composer’s autograph has not been preserved and is considered lost. This circumstance creates an exceptional challenge many editors faced over the years. The four autograph sources still in existence and the first print from 1824 show numerous small deviations, especially in terms of articulation markings and phrasing. In this two-volume edition of Bach’s cello suites, Andrew Talle now presents an entirely new view of the relationships between existing sources. The first volume contains the edited musical text, which comes as close to the composer’s original intention as the surviving source material allows: “This edition does not constitute a perfect reconstruction of the lost autograph; that is something no editor could claim to accomplish. Instead, I have attempted to supply musicians and researchers with a reliable version of the surviving musical text of the six cello suites, and to convey a sense of the many possibilities Bach encouraged his musicians to explore.â€The second volume presents, for the first time, synoptically arranged facsimiles of the handwritten sources as well as the first print (with Suite No. V also including Bach’s own arrangement for lute), allowing readers to compare any specific section in all sources at one glance. This allows for a straightforward and immediate consideration of all sources, making editorial decisions transparent and self-evident.Andrew Talle’s edition is supplemented by a comprehensive discussion of the instrument for which the suites were created, as well as information regarding musical interpretation during Bach’s time.

Psalm 137 Super flumina Babylonis also known as By the rivers of Babylon was an inspiration for many composers including Camille Saint-Saëns. He repeatedly occupied himself with his psalm motet for solo soprano, mixed choir, saxophone quartet, string orchestra and organ, originally composed in 1854. Two of the four versions â?? the first version in Latin and a much later version in English for alto solo, SATB choir and piano â?? are now available for the first time in Urtext performing editions taking a meticulous account of all the sources.Saint-Saëns lived up to his reputation as an innovative composer by exploring the use of the saxophone family in sacred music just a few years after the invention of these instruments. The successful combination of voice and saxophone creates a special sound experience.

To strive for the highest in art - these are the words with which Franz Schubert announced his A flat major Mass in 1828.
ISBN 9790004182628. 7.5 x 10.5 inches.
To strive for the highest in art - these are the words with which Franz Schubert announced his A flat major Mass in 1828, a work which he designated as Missa solemnis in his autograph. Alone the genesis of the work shows the importance which the composer placed on this work. Schubert wrote the score between 1819 and 1822, an unusually long period of time for him. He later fundamentally revised the mass when he applied for the post of Vice Court Kapellmeister in Vienna, which he did not obtain. After this disappointment, he rejected his original intent of dedicating the mass to the Emperor or Empress. Thanks to Peter Jost's Breitkopf Urtext edition, Schubert's Missa solemnis once again adds its luster to the publisher's catalogue: Breitkopf & Hartel published its final version in the Schubert Gesamtausgabe in 1887. SWV 369-380, The six and seven-part motets, nos. 13-29:In 1648 Heinrich Schütz published a collection of 29 motets with five to seven parts titled â??Geistliche Chor-Musicâ? (Sacred Choir Music). Here, the term â??Chorâ? (choir) refers not only to a (large) vocal ensemble but, more generally, to a group of musicians, vocal or instrumental. As explained by Schütz in the foreword he published with the collection, all parts of the motets can be performed vocally and/or instrumentally.

Mendelssohn is considered a self-critical composer, who repeatedly reworked a number of his pieces until he deemed them worthy to be published. The path to his first Piano Trio was particularly rocky: only after several attempts was he able to complete it in the summer of 1839; it appeared in 1840 after further revisions. This perfectionism paid off, for Mendelssohn's D Minor Trio was immediately received with enthusiasm. Robert Schumann wrote: “It is the master trio of the present day, like those of Beethoven in Bb and D and that of Franz Schubert in Eb were in their time; a very beautiful composition which after years will still delight grandchildren and great-grandchildren.†Which was to prove true: even today, it numbers among the most popular works in the trio repertoire in general. The trio, taken from the volume Mendelssohn • Piano Trios HN 957, is now available from Henle for the first time also as a practical single edition.
