Titan's Progress, which is Hermann Pallhuber's first work for the British style brass band, contains references to the music of Gustav Mahler. Motifs from Mahler's First Symphony are employed throughout and especially the principal theme of the finale. Pallhuber's music is programmatic and uses the content of the novel and its hero Albano's evolution for its underlying structure. The stylistic variety of the work (including the Chorale, an impudent Landler, a dancing Farandole, and a climactic Fugue) are Mahleresque in their influences. Titan was a novel by the German author Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, who later known as Jean Paul, and was considered the author's main work. At almost 900 pages in length, it tells the story of the transition of its hero, Albano de Cesara, from a passionate youth to a mature man. Jean Paul was one of Gustav Mahler's favorite authors and the latter gave the original five-movement version of his first symphony the subtitle The Titan -- in deference to Jean Paul's novel.

Piano solo part for Paganini Variations - Piano Concerto No.3 by Poul Ruders (2014). Score available: WH32201 Programme note: In 1999 my friend, American guitar virtuoso David Starobin, wanted me to write a concerto for guitar and orchestra. It quickly dawned on me, that this commission presented a golden opportunity to contribute to the time-honoured tradition of composing a series of variations on Nicolo Paganini's famous 24th Caprice for violin solo, a work which itself is a set of variations. The 16 bar (with the first 4 bars repeated) theme is not particularly sophisticated or intricate, but its inherent simplicity and logic just grow on you, almost to the point ofdistraction - and the secret behind it being hauled through the wringer by composers as disparate as Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Lutoslawski is perhaps found in its - what I'll call, with a quick nervous look over my shoulder: brilliant banality. You can do anything with that tune, it'll always be recognizable and just there, however much you maul it. The piece (subtitled Guitar Concerto no 2) was written pretty quickly, premiered and subsequently recorded for Bridge Records with David and the Odense Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jan Wagner, and everybody was happy. But the story didn't end there, and it must be the ultimate proof of the durability of the theme, not to mention the flexibility and far-sightedness of David Starobin , when he 14 years later suggested why not transcribe the solo part for piano?. The idea appealed to me immediately. One thing was clear from the beginning: the new version could in no way sound like a transcription. My aim was to end up with a solo-part sounding like were it the one-and-only, the real thing, if you like. The orchestral score remains exactly the same in both cases. Both versions, the two Paganini Variations, are comparable to a set of twins, not quite identical, but almost. And both each others's equal. Poul Ruders.

Purcell composed this brilliant theme as incidental music for his work Abdelazar (1693). Three centuries later Benjamin Britten used it in his symphonic work The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (with the subtitle Variation and Fugue on a theme of Purcell) and it became famous. This arrangement by Jan de Haan remains faithful to Britten's intentions featuring the different tembres of the instruments. Rondo entrances the listener with its varied tone colours and its solemn grandeur.

DUO’s succinct movement titles (I. Here, II. Open, III. Stark, IV. Ardent) tease at revealing the grand and heartfelt inspiration for exuberant romanticism in this sonata-like work of symphonic proportions and depth. Charles Gibb is both an accomplished pianist and an award-winning flutist, who has written of this compelling major addition to the literature: “This work is a journey. What journey and whose journey does not matter. It is my journey, it is your journey. It is the journey of those who came before us, and of those who will come after us. I wrote this hoping that we can find each other along the road, so we can realize that we don’t need to go on the journey alone.†Gibb’s DUO is sure to become a favorite major work for flute recitalists. This work is a journey. What journey and whose journey does not matter. It is my journey, it is your journey. It is the journey of those who came before us, and of those who will come after us. I wrote this hoping that we can find each other along the road, so we can realize that we don’t need to go on the journey alone.“Here†begins with three notes that shape the rhythmic and harmonic content of the entire work. Melodies and harmonies including the tonic, dominant, and leading tone can be found in each of the four movements. The first moments of this movement introduce the melody, offering itself unencumbered and uninhibited. It shows itself as it is. The melodies soar, the harmonies become voiced more intricately, and the opening theme repeats in full grandeur. The momentum slows down, and the movement ends with a sense of completion, yet remains unbalanced.A striking piano gesture launches “Open,†the idea of instability reflected with the flowing flute trills and unclear meter patterns in the piano. The sensation of an unsteady grace in 5/8 time arrives with a piano ostinato. The melody is expressive, yet insecure and unbalanced due to changing meters. After a grand pause, the movement transitions to 4/4 time with the flute switching between duplet and triplet flourishes. After a rapid descent in the flute, the opening gesture returns, changed and abruptly interrupted. The third movement, “Stark,†is very static, beginning plainly but markedly. The falling fifth calls out continually throughout the movement, searching, lost. Melodies appear in pieces, some smooth and flowing, others rather disjunct. The piece climaxes with a line of mournfulness, yet revealing a deeper strength through intense projection of tone in the high register. However, the static harmonies return, this time unsteady all the way to its foundation. This destabilization repeats, and then quietly recedes.“Ardent†is the longest of the movements and spans a wide range of musical emotion. Part of the movement is fast paced, energetic, and balances order and disarray. However, once the chaos dies down, a gentle, expressive theme comes in. The theme itself is very resolute; it is order appearing from the pandemonium. Conflict returns, and order and chaos become less distinguishable from one another, and soon fuse together. However, order returns with new meaning, synthesized with previous musical content, creating a truer, deeper sense of awareness or understanding. A moment of ambiguity arises, but the flute persists, supported by the sensitive but firm figuration in the piano, and resoundingly comes to a close, unburdened and at ease.

Written in a standard overture form, the catchy melodies and rhythms will be sure to delight audiences while keeping the players fully engaged. A brief lyrical interlude adds variety and a moment of repose before returning to the more energized main theme. This is an outstanding choice for a spring concert or a first band festival/contest experience. (2:40).

Broken Runes is a bold piece for late beginners in B minor by Doug Spata. Successive down bows at the frog create a ferocious percussive ostinato, and the challenging staccato eighth notes of the main theme add to the primitive style. The piece is rhythmically simple, tonally accessible, and features all sections of the orchestra. Students will love showing off this piece at your next concert! (1:50).

One of Haydn's most famous symphonic movements, this selection will give your students a chance to develop a refined, Classic style of playing. It seems like Haydn included everything in this movement---a delicately beautiful main theme, wild, minor-keyed outbursts, military percussion, and a solo trumpet fanfare. No wonder the London audiences went crazy over it! Arranged with the young orchestra in mind, all string parts are in first position. A great introduction to a too-often neglected style.

This novelty piece in rondo form features the clarinet section removing one section of their instrument at a time. As the piece progresses, the instruments become smaller and smaller until the main theme they carry is totally absent from the accompaniment part played by the rest of the ensemble. The creative possibilities with this piece are limited only to the director's imagination!

Victor C. Johnson's jubilant setting of the traditional Latin text is ideal for developing choirs. The rousing mixed-meter introduction lays the groundwork for a syncopated presentation of the main theme that melts into a reverent middle section. A gradual crescendo and accelerando lead us back to the driving A section. Thrilling!

Basie's Blues is a rousing medium tempo big band chart which also functions as a Basie-style piano feature. Arranger Russell Schmidt has crafted a unique three-horn harmonization (plus optional flute and clarinet) of the main theme, giving this piece a very distinctive sound. In addition to solo space for the pianist, there is a bass solo (although this solo can easily be moved to another instrument, if desired). Basie's Blues is based on one of the easiest etudes from Jim Snidero's Easy Jazz Conception Series.

Inspired by the bedroom community to New York City, this vibrant overture musically reflects the juxtaposition of the tranquility of nature in this quiet suburb with the busyness of modern-day life in the city. Set in ABCA form, the composition opens with a trickling melodic line depicting the beginning of the brook itself building to the energetic main theme. Musically exploring that dichotomy, the work unifies to a chorale section and builds to a frenzied conclusion. Highly recommended for concerts and contest alike! (3:00).
