Locke's Theatre, an orchestral work in three short movements, takes as its departure point incidental music written for Shakespeare's The Tempest by the seventeenth-century English composer Matthew Locke. Aspects of Locke's idiosyncratic and daringly advanced harmonic and rhythmic language were to be adopted (some might say perfected) by his younger friend and protege Henry Purcell. But it is the very rawness and directness of Locke's theatre music that I wished to acknowledge and emulate. In each of my work's three movements - entitled respectively 'The First Music', 'Rustic Music', and 'Curtain Music (with Storm)' - the baroque originals, though very often submerged, remain a constant, shadowy presence. Locke's Theatre was commissioned by the Aldeburgh Festival to mark the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth. -Ryan Wigglesworth.

Colin Matthews's Turning Point (2006) represents a bold stylistic breakthrough for its composer. Out of a whirring, motoric scherzo comes a jolting sea change: an austere, glacial string chorale of searing intensity that, with gritty resilience, gradually comes to overwhelm everything else. Commissioned by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, this 25-minute journey from complex momentum to expressive simplicity displays all the ingenious craft we have come to expect from Matthews, together with a new-found emotional directness.

To What God Shall We Chant Our Songs of Battle? was commissioned by James O'Donnell and Westminster Abbey for a service of solemn commemoration on 4 August 2014 marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Stark and gritty yet always rooted in tonality, Matthews's expressive harmonies bring a potent immediacy to the bitter, disillusioned words of war poet Harold Monro and the two lyrical solos for soprano and tenor which set passages from the Book of Lamentations and St. Luke's Gospel. Beginning with a violent and impassioned energy, this anthem ultimately offers little consolation. In the words of James O'Donnell it leaves you standing on the edge of an abyss--its impetus petering out in a series of hushed, troubled questions.

The name of Lara Poe’s solo trumpet work Triton (2019) alludes both the sea god Triton and the shell named after him. The 6’30’’ long piece is constructed of two types of material: the combination of a fanfare like trumpet call with a meandering line, and more undulating material. Lara Poe's (b. 1993) energetic Divergence (2015-2016) for string quartet was conceived cyclically: the four movements explore drifting in and out of focus between different materials. A light ditty of the second movement diverges to the third movement's overtone derived chords.Duration: c. 25'This product includes a set of parts (violin I, violin II, viola, violoncello) and a score.Lara Poe is a Finnish-American composer who is currently based in London. I composed this setting in my last weeks of study at Westminster Choir College. The Latin text (Sine paenitentia enim sunt dona et vocatio Dei) translates roughly to “Truly, without regret are the gifts and callings of God.†This piece serves not only as an outward affirmation for all to embrace and use their God-given talents, but also as an inward mantra for myself, as I move into an uncertain period in my life after completing my undergraduate studies. Many of the colors and textures found within this piece were influenced by my experience singing with the Westminster Williamson Voices for two years. While the “sine paenitentia†text may allow shades of doubt to creep in, all uncertainty and fear is dispelled upon singing “sunt dona et vocatio Dei.†—Cortlandt Matthews Here is an amazing performance by The Westminster Williamson Voices at the Choral Insititute at Oxford. His concertos justifiably rank among the milestones of solo music accompanied by orchestra. In Viennese Classicism, piano music flourished thanks to innovations in the instrumental technique, and even Mozart fully exploited the advantages of the fortepiano action over the rigid sound of the harpsichord in his works.Piano Concerto No. 25 is Mozart's longest concerto. The harmonic structure, the continuous change between major and minor, the witty dialoguing between solo and orchestra, the strong contrapuntal saturation, the frequent use of the pedal point as well as the overflowing melodic abundance give the work a character all its own.

Traditional hymn by Anne Hawks and Robert Lowry This hymn setting offers a new take on an old classic with close harmonies and a new meter. Shifting this hymn into 4/4 creates a pleasing and meditative feel. The setting builds to a powerful final stanza and a return to the hymn's original 3/4 meter, closing with the quiet, prayerful plea, I need, I need, I need thee every hour!.

This tango was originally composed in 1990 as the fourth movement of the composer's Fourth Symphony. It was intended there as a modern equivalent of the classical minuet. The tango is the most alluring of contemporary dances, and a number of arrangements of it exist, including ones for solo piano and for various chamber ensembles. This latest version for thirty (or more) players was arranged in 1999 by the composer especially for the Faber Wind Band Series.
