George Frideric Handel is considered England's first and foremost composer of oratorios. Above all, the Messiah is regarded as the epitome of sacred music and in German-speaking countries it is also one of the most often performed works in the genre. The version of the Messiah which is most often performed today is a combination of various versions. Consequently, the present critical edition by Ton Koopman contains all the surviving alternative versions of the solo movements. A concordance makes it possible to assign these movements to those various performances of the work conducted by Handel between the Dublin premiere in 1742 and the London concerts which took place up to 1759. In accordance with the wishes voiced by many choral conductors and singers, the vocal score is available in separate English and German versions. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5505600.

The Messiah, by the Swedish composer Sven-David Sandstrom, was commissioned by the Oregon Bach Festival and the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart to commemorate the Handel anniversary year 2009. In accordance with the wishes of these two institutions, the work is based on Charles Jennen's English libretto which Handel set in his famous oratorio more than 260 years ago. Great expression and orchestral color characterize this Messiah of the 21st century, in which for Sandstrom modernity and euphony do not represent a contradiction - corresponding to his artistic credo: My music should be understandable on first hearing and should touch people..

The Christmas season opens a portal in time through which words and melodies from many centuries flow into our busy modern lives. In A Blest Messiah Born, Larry Shackley skillfully blends some of the most beloved ancient carols into a fresh, captivating retelling of the story of Jesus' birth. It begins with God's eternal plan of redemption, then starts the Christmas story with the Annunciation. Along the way, Larry presents delightful new settings of favorite carols such as The Friendly Beasts; What Child is This?; Ding Dong! Merrily on High; and Good Christian Friends, Rejoice. A Blest Messiah Born contains rich moments of reflection as well as high-spirited rejoicing. It is enhanced by hints of Renaissance rhythms and melodies, and the lyrics of the carols flow together with the poetic narration to portray the events of the nativity story. The entire work lends itself to simple staging, adding characters in each number to build a living manger scene.
