The Geuzen Medal is an annual award given to people or organizations who have found unique ways to further democracy in the world and help eliminate dictatorships, racism, and discrimination. The original Geuzen fought against Spanish imperialism in Holland during the16th century. During the Second World War a group resisting the Nazis also named themselves De Geuzen. Jan de Haan incorporates Psalm 43, sung by a group of condemned prisoners shortly before their execution in 1943, into Geuzen Medal Fanfare, composed for the 25th bestowal of this special award.Ieder jaar weer wordt ze weer uitgereikt: de Geuzenpenning. Dit is aan een persoon of organisatie die zich op bijzondere wijze inzet voor de democratie en tegen dictatuur, racisme en discriminatie. In de zestiende eeuw streden deGeuzen tegen de Spaanse bezetting. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog was er eveneens een verzetsgroep die zich zo noemde. Een deel van hen werd in 1943 veroordeeld tot de doodstraf. Vlak voor de voltrekking van het vonnis zetten zij psalm43 in. Precies deze psalm verwerkte Jan de Haan in zijn openingswerk Geuzen Medal Fanfare. Hij schreef het ter gelegenheid van de vijfentwintigste uitreiking.Der Geuzenpenning (Geuzen Medal) wird jährlich an Menschen oder Organisataionen verliehen, die sich auf besondere Weise für die Demokratie und gegen Diktatur, Rassismus und Diskriminierung eingesetzt haben. Die ursprünglichen Geuzen kämpften gegen spanische Besatzung in Holland im 16. Jahrhundert; im Zweiten Weltkrieg nannte sich eine Widerstandsgruppe gegen die Deutschen ebenfalls De Geuzen. Den Psalm 43, den eine Gruppe von Verurteilten 1943 kurz vor ihrer Hinrichtung anstimmte, verarbeitete Jan de Haan in seinem Eröffnungswerk De Geuzen Medal Fanfare, das er zur 25. Verleihung dieses besonderen Ordens schrieb.La Médaille des Gueux décernée par la Geuzen Resistance Foundation 1940-1945, met l’honneur une personne ou une organisation méritante, s’étant engagée dans la lutte pour la démocratie. Le nom de la fondation tire son origine de la révolte des Gueux, mouvement patriotique néerlandais. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, des résistants reprirent le nom des Gueux. Chaque année, la ville de Yokohama célèbre une fête particulière, le “Yokohama Kaikosaiâ€, la date anniversaire de l’ouverture du port maritime qui permit le développement de la ville. L’Orchestre d’Harmonie de Yokohama (Yokohama Wind Symphony) fut spécialement créé en 2006, pour participer au Concert de Bienfaisance « Autour du Brass Band » organisé par l’Association The Brass Cruise. L’objectif de cette formation ad hoc est d’encourager et de soutenir l’activité culturelle de la population et de promouvoir la musique japonaise pour formations vent ayant ses racines Yokohama. Le Yokohama Wind Symphony est devenu un élément essentiel du festival. Il est constitué de plus de200 musiciens tous recrutés publiquement. En 2007, le compositeur Satoshi Yagisawa répondit favorablement l’invitation de l’orchestre dont il fut le chef invité. cet effet, le comité de l’Association The Brass Cruise lui commanda une œuvre de circonstance. Satoshi Yagisawa composa une fanfare brillante qu’il intitula Fanfare Mi-Chi-Bi-Ki (d’après le nom d’une statue en bronze de Yokohama). L’œuvre fut donnée en création mondiale en ouverture du concert 2007. l’instar de la statue qui l’a inspirée, la fanfare exprime le désir d’un monde meilleur, un monde de paix.

Galea et Bellum was commissioned by the Excelsior Schraard music society (Friesland, the Netherlands). The work tells the story of a rare helmet that was discovered in a church in the Frisian village of Schettens in 2015. Research revealed that it had been the property of Skelte van Aysma, a Frisian officer who fought in the armies of the Princes of Orange Maurice and Frederick Henry during the Eighty Years’ War. This little piece of history was the starting point for this composition. As a leitmotif, the hymn ‘Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig ist der Menschen Leben’ (‘Ah, how fleeting, ah how insignificant’) has been used. This 17th century melody by Michel Franck, inan arrangement by Johann Sebastian Bach, initially appears only in fragments, but grows to full stature toward the end of the work. An ideal contest piece with lots of challenges for your band. Galea et Bellum is geschreven in opdracht van muziekvereniging Excelsior Schraard. Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from the Friesland area of Holland. He was a farmer who became a resistance fighter against Dutch oppressors in around 1500. Whether Magnus was a hero or barbarian is still debatable, but composer Jan de Haan was fascinated by the exciting story and let it fuel his imagination. The protagonist is introduced with a capricious theme which is followed by “De Arumer Swarte Heap,“ the troops who took to the battlefields against the Dutch. An eerie calm takes over moments before Pier and his troops let their battle cries sound. The work ends as the disillusioned Pier retreats. A concert work overflowing with excitement!Pierius Magnus is een historisch figuur uit Friesland. Hij was boer én opstandeling tegen de Hollandse onderdrukkers, zo rond het jaar 1500. Was hij een held? Was hij een barbaar? Hoe we hem ook willen zien, Jan de Haan zag in GruttePier ieder geval een spannende bron van inspiratie in voor een compositie. Hij stelt de nationale held direct in het begin aan ons voor met een grillig capricciothema. Daarna volgt: ‘De Arumer Swarte Heap’, zijn bende mannen dieten strijde trok tegen de Hollanders. Een moment van rust valt in. Maar niet voor lang, want de strijd barst in alle hevigheid los! Het werk eindigt met het terugtrekken van een gedesillusioneerde Grutte Pier...Pierius Magnus ist eine historische Figur aus Friesland, ein Bauer und Aufständischer gegen die holländischen Unterdrücker um 1500. Ob Held oder Barbar lässt sich heute einfach nicht zweifelsfrei belegen, aber der Komponist fand die Geschichte einfach zu spannend, um sie nciht als Inspirationsquelle zu nutzen. In Pierius Magnus wird der Nationalheld gleich zu Beginn des Werkes mit einem kapriziösen Thema vorgestellt, gefolgt von seinem Haufen De Arumer Swarte Heap. Dann- bevor der Kampf beginnt- tritt ein Moment der Ruhe ein, bevor Pier und seine Truppe in den Kampf ziehen. Das Werk endet mit dem Rücken des desillusionierten Pierius.Pier Gerlofs Donia est l’un des personnages les plus célèbres de l’histoire de la Frise au cours des années 1500. L’Histoire ne nous permet pas de discerner les réelles intentions de cet homme surnommé le grand Pier de par son imposante stature. Était-il un combattant de la liberté ou un authentique barbare ? Le compositeur a trouvé toutefois en cette emblématique figure, une source d’inspiration fascinante. Pierius Grelofs Donia è una delle più celebri figure della storia della regione olandese della Frisia nel corso del 1500. La storia non ci permette di discernere le reali intenzioni di quest’uomo soprannominato Grutte Pier (il grande Pier) per la sua statura imponente. Fu un paladino della libert o un semplice barbaro? Il compositore ha trovato in questa emblematica figura un’affascinante fonte d’ispirazione. Le prime misure di Pierius Magnus descrivono l’eroe nazionale attraverso un tema capriccioso. Un secondo tema dipinge la brigata nera di Arum, pronta ad affrontare gli olandesi. Un breve momento di calma fa da preludio al combattimento, prima che Pier Grelofsentri in azione. Disilluso, il grande Pier si ritira; la fine dell’opera sancisce anche la fine del combattimento.

Tijdens zijn conservatoriumjaren speelde Jacob de Haan in een skaband. â??Speciaal voor dit bandje schreef ik een nummer. Het was een deuntje dat me bijbleef. Vele jaren later, tijdens een wandeling in een stadspark realiseerde ik me,dat het nummer qua thematiek ook zeer interessant was om voor een orkest te arrangeren.â? Queenâ??s Park Melody hoort thuis in de categorie lichte muziek met barokinvloeden: een verwijzing naar de weelderig versierde beelden in hetpark. â??De combinatie barok en pop? Le Lion de Belfort was composed for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort: an enormous red sandstone lion that dominates the landscape of the French city of Belfort. This 22 metre long and 11 metre high lion symbolises the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870-1871. The composer added a narrator and three-part choir to the concert band instrumentation, who utilise texts written specially for the occasion by Jean Ehret.The workâ??s première took place at the inauguration of Le Lion de Belfort on 28 November 2010, 130 years after sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) completed the statue.Dit werk is geschreven voor de officiële inwijding van het beeldhouwwerk Le Lion de Belfort: een enorme uit rodezandsteen gebeeldhouwde leeuw die het gezicht van de Franse stad Belfort bepaalt. Taneli Kuusisto (1905-88) was a versatile influence in Finnish musical life: composer, pianist, organist, church musician, writer on music, and Rector of the Sibelius Academy. Of the more than 120 solo songs penned by him, Suomalainen rukous (A Finnish Prayer), a setting of a poem by Uuno Kailas composed in 1939 on the eve of the Winter War, has acquired a status all of its own. The 28-year-old Jon Lord, with no experience at all of writing for orchestra, composed this work in only three months in the lead-up to its premiere with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Malcolm Arnold. It was his first workfor orchestra, launching his career as both a classical composer and a founding member of Deep Purple. It is notably rich in youthful invention, sound in structure, and sophisticated in craftsmanship. It broke new ground at thetime, and seems only to have grown in stature across the intervening years. Movement three portrays the mystery and amazing craftsmanship used to build the Great Pyramid at Giza. The timpani part is optional, but very highly recommended as it significantly adds to the majestic nature of these works.

The Evolution of Solo Jazz Piano is a study of solo piano styles developed by 24 of the most influential solo pianists from 1900 to the present. In order to clearly illustrate the specific contributions of the various pianists, Bill Dobbins composed a theme based on the well-known standard All of Me. By applying the stylistic approaches of the different pianists to the same theme, one becomes aware of the subtle yet evocative elements of each individual style. Common elements between Waller, Ellington, Tatum, Monk and Rowles, Tatum, Hines and Wilson, Smith and Ellington, Corea and Beirach etc., should make it clear that musical individuality is largely the result of the subconscious emphasis of some musical elements over others, rather than the self-conscious cultivation of originality for its own sake. We sincerely hope that this DVD may serve as a stimulus toward the further study of the solo jazz piano tradition in particular and for creative music in general. Titles are always a problem - so after listening to a few playbacks, this very imposing statue of the Titan Atlas lifting the Universe on his shoulders came to mind - starting slowly with the low brass, “Rising†moves steadily with determination and intensity to a powerful and “muscular†conclusion . Unlike Sisyphus (of perpetual rolling stone fame) the monumental effort of Atlas was successful . As with all performing pieces, attention to dynamics and articulation are critical - In “Atlas Rising†- the conductor has many opportunities to interpretive discretion, particularly in the opening slower sections and after measure 109 on to the conclusion .
