Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrastingtraditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert. Christoph Willibald Gluck’s most popular opera “Orphe et Euridice†was performed in 1774 in Paris to sensational success. This new adaption followed the original Viennese version with Italian text that was first performed in 1762 under the direction of the composer in the Burgtheater. For the Paris version Gluck changed the leading part Orpheus from an alto to a tenor role and composed new recitatives. Both versions of Gluck’s reform drama are based on a libretto by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi and revolutionised metastasian opera of the 18th century. Solo and choral music, instrumental music, pantomime and dance are all closely connected; the myth replaces a historical plot surrounded by intrigue; where there would have been a da-capo aria there are now simple song forms and coloratura is largely abandoned. These meticulously revised vocal scores of both versions are also newly set.

Immediately following his first opera Rheinberger composed a small dramatic cantata for children's voices in 1863. It is based on a story from the Gospel of St. Mark, arranged as a rhymed libretto with various roles by Franz Bonn (1830-1854). Among the highpoints of the cantata are a scene of awakening fashioned as a choral recitative with an expressive piano part and a large final chorus Preist laut den Herr. Both of these helped to make the cantata very popular in Rheinberger's days with boys' and girls' choirs. Rheinberger later arranged it with an accompaniment by a small orchestra. Carus 70.301/10, which is part of the material associated with this piece, can be used as the choral score. Gabriel Faure composed the Cantique de Jean Racine in 1865, the prizewinning work for the completion of his musical training. The composer expanded the original scoring for choir and organ by adding a string accompaniment; the version with orchestra was first performed in 1906. As a text Faure chose a French adaptation by Jean Racine of the Latin hymn Consors paterni luminis. The Cantique already displays the characteristics of an expressive choral setting typical for Faure, as well as the finely worked out orchestral accompaniment, and together with the Requiem, composed considerably later, it is among the most popular works of the composer.
