A versatile Mass setting for use throughout the liturgical year, Mass of the Sun of Justice / Misa Sol de Justicia is fully bilingual, singable entirely in English or in Spanish, or any pastoral combination of both languages. At its core, this setting is built on assembly-minded melodies. Much of the choral writing is two-part, albeit spelled out in four voices, whereby the basses frequently double the soprano melody, and the alto and tenor lines essentially share a single harmony in their respective ranges, splitting only at cadence points for a fuller effect. Optional descants and divisi further expand the voicing possibilities. The additional instrumentation is particularly spirited, further enhancing these sung texts for solemn occasions. “Sun of justice†is a term used to reference Christ with respect to his second coming, as found in the ancient “O†antiphons. This title appears in the Lectionary among the Alleluia options for the common of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and is, in fact, assigned to the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, celebrated within the Advent season. As such, the music is “Advent-like†in nature—joyful and filled with hope. ~~~~~ Preview select songs from this mass setting in the video below:.

Commissioned by the American Federation Pueri Cantores to showcase diversity within the Spanish-language choral repertoire, this advanced choral piece written for SATB voices and piano accompaniment is a setting of Philippians chapter 2, in which Saint Paul exalts Christ as the “name above all names†for having taken on human form to die on the cross. The piece is in three sections, mirroring the three-part form of the scripture passage: a gentle, stoic homophonic opening in C major, a polyphonic, somber middle section in A minor at the words “even death on a cross,†and an exuberant section in A major climaxing in the final statement that “Christ Jesus is the Lord!†For choirs looking for a musical challenge and an opportunity to showcase the choral arts using scriptural texts in Spanish, this masterful work makes for a tremendous concert piece, prelude or liturgical anthem. The piece even offers an optional call-and-response refrain for assembles to learn its multilingual text. “Veni, Sancte Spiritus†was composed for and premiered at the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM) 2022 National Convention. Here is a fresh setting that deserves to be placed among the classic interpretations of this George Herbert poem. As is typical of Peter Pindar Stearns' style, this work contains many soaring, lyrical phrases for all the voice parts. Each verse is treated with further intensification of the harmonies and the voices expand to fill out the emotion of the words such a joy as none can move. This anthem will require a sensitive performance to obtain the many subtleties within the parts here.

The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown of spring 2020 has affected people’s lives drastically. Gatherings have been stopped, people have been confined to their homes, and physical distancing has become the norm. Composers have responded to these changes in a multitude of ways, for me, it has resulted in the creation of music that uplifts and reconnects people. “The World†sets Archibald Lampman’s powerful poem “Sight,†the words seeming particularly poignant for our times. Working in collaboration with my vocal quartet Anchorae, we invited people from across the world to submit recordings of themselves singing a part of the piece. The resulting recording by the Anchorae Isolation Choir features submissions from three countries, bringing people together through music. —Peter Relph Watch this performance on YouTube  .
