According to music critic Mark Azarra, Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) was “one of the four best composers of instrumental music in the 20th century, next to George Gershwin, Aaron Copland and Charles Ivesâ€. Many of his nostalgic songs such as Sleigh Ride and Blue Tango are firmly embedded in the American popular music culture. In 1945 at the request of Roger Voisin, the principal trumpeter of the Boston Pops Orchestra, Anderson wrote the Trumpeter’s Lullaby. Ed Huckeby’s Build-A-Band arrangement of Angela’s Song is arranged for solo and small band. Solo parts are included for all of the usual band solo instruments plus the usual Build-A-Band instrumentation which allows it to performed with Soloist plus other instruments so that the four essential band parts are covered. Optional Percussion and keyboard parts can add to the overall effect. A great way to show off your best player even with a very small band.

The Build-A-Band Series provides educational and enjoyable music for bands with incomplete or unbalanced instrumentation. Written using just four or five parts (plus percussion), these effective arrangements will work with any combination of brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments as long as you distribute the parts so that each of the five parts is covered. All of the publications in the Build-A-Band Series have been arranged to be playable with any instrumentation as long as each part is used: 1st Part, 2nd Part, 3rd Part, 4th Part, and Bass Part. This short, “cool†suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete concert band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane, which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat. This wonderful suite has been composed especially for youth musicians and they will all gain great pleasure from performing it.Because of the four-part instrumentation, School's Cool is suitable for smaller strengths, taking into account that it is important to divide parts evenly among the players. Opening with a stately rhythm in the low brass, the main theme moves into a slightly slower and more lyrical section with cascading triplets moving throughout the woodwinds. Moving into a faster section, the piece echoes motives from earlier in the work while introducing a few new ideas. An excellent choice for contest and festival. (6:30).
