Mendelssohn composed his first oratorio Paulus under the impression of his own revival of J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 1829. He integrated chorale settings into St. Paul, for which he was accused by his contemporaries of making a stylistic break, using an element unsuitable to church music. In spite of these reservations, during Mendelssohn's lifetime St. Paul was one of his most popular works, which received numerous performances throughout Europe. Robert Schuman praised the inextinguishable color of the instrumentation and the brilliant play with all the forms of composition. He described it as a jewel of the present.. Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. For a performance this piece could easily be combined with the Salve Regina by Pietro Cassati (Carus 27.703) from the Vienna series. Score available separately - see item CA.2770500.

With its traditional forms and proven compositional models, its original ideas, which are sometimes marked by a folk- or folksong-like melodic character, and with its harmonic richness, Dvorak's D major Mass serves in its liturgical context to express the worship of God. The Mass is characterized by lyrical meditation rather than by dramatic immediacy. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4065300.

The text, Isaiah 9:6, is found as the offertory for Christmas in the Roman Missal. The music is pure classical period—think Haydn, to whom this piece, incidentally, has been wrongly attributed. Scored for organ and choir, with three strings and two trombones, it includes both Latin and English texts. SATB. GIA is pleased to offer this edited and translated version of the Christmas offertory Parvulus filius by Franz Schneider. Based on research from the Melk archive of the Benedictine monastery in Lower Austria, Jane Hettrick has prepared a fantastic edition of this little-known historical gem. The text is provided in both Latin and English, and a continuo of two violins, cello, and two trombones (which double the alto and tenor voices) is also available. Editorial slurs and articulations are also provided.

So this is true: We are one body in the Lord. The opening words are proclaimed by the choir and echoed by the organ and brass, and what follows is creative and musically satisfying, but never predictable. The brass is tacet during a short, introspective middle section. The mostly homophonic choral writing and the judicious use of brass allow the text- a unique interpretation of 1 Corinthians 12- to be primary.Instrumental parts packet includes: Trumpet I and II in B-flat and C, Trombone I and II, Horn in F (sub for Trombone I), Organ.

Carus published the original version of Bruckner's Te Deum for soloists, choir and large orchestra (Carus 27.190) in the fall of 2015. In order to make this work available for performance by smaller-sized ensembles [und einem weiteren Benutzerkreis zuganglich zu machen] Carus now presents it in an arrangement for brass quintet and organ. The brass parts are orientated essentially towards those in Bruckner's orchestral version, while the organ part follows the original string parts. [Damit kann nun auch unter eingeschrankten Bedingungen dieses grossartige Werk in einer adaquaten, stimmigen Form zur Auffuhrung gebracht werden.] As the voice parts (soloists and choir) in this reduced version are identical with those of the original the vocal score and choral score of the latter version can be used. This work is available (in the original version) in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.2719000.

Here is the classic Latin text for episcopal visits presented in a fairly easy, but glorious, setting for any parish choir of some substance—that is, one that can mimic the power and style of the brass and organ fanfare. Consider it an ideal short prelude of acclamation before the opening hymn. Short and sweet—and powerful. Percussion part is for timpani and cymbals. .
