Rihards Dubra (born Latvia, 1964) wrote his Symphony No. 2 in 2014. It is a large-scale work, over 30 minutes long, in three movements (titled 'Visio', 'Cantus', 'Et vidi...'), for large orchestra comprising triple wind and brass, percussion and harp.
Speaking of symphonic writing, the composer says: 'I don't think a symphony should speak about small, everyday things and issues; it should speak of global, fundamental and substantial things. Only then does it justify the name 'symphony'. It must be something serious.'

Issued in 1966, the enduring popularity of this novelty number for young bands can best be explained by its appealing simplicity and practical flexibility. All that's needed is at least one low instrument to cover the bass part (trombone, baritone, tenor sax, tuba, bass clarinet) and any combination of higher instruments for the treble part. Musically it's a 12-bar blues featuring a staccato walking bass line for low winds punctuated by a rhythmic, repeated-pitch pattern for upper winds. Beginners who can play just two notes can even play along, and the final chorus offers some dramatic options by having the band stand the first time through, then playing it one more time! as an encore after applause. Duration 2:00.

Composed for violinist Baird Dodge in 1995-97, SLEEP is a 25-minute concerto in three movements. Thefirst movement (Twitching) is dramatic in character, full of contrasts, pitting the violin against the orchestra in more or less romantic fashion. The second (Breathing) is comprised of overlapping layers of simple harmonies accompanying a freely evolving, lyrical melody in the violin. In the third movement (Sweating), the soloist and ensemble initially work together to create a rising line. They soon diverge, and an increasing layering of multiple lines throughout the ensemble leads to a very high point of density which is then abruptly cut off by the virtuosic frenzy in the violin which ends the work.

Christian Boesch created this adaptation of Mozart's The Magic Flute specifically for children. Papageno narrates the opera and explains why we have operas, where all words are sung rather than spoken.
