Bach composed the cantata Jesus schlaft, was soll ich hoffen [Jesus sleeps, what hope have I] BWV 81 for the fourth Epiphany Sunday, 1724. The cantata is structured as a little drama: In the beginning, fear prevails. The seas rage and Jesus is asleep. The threateningly foaming waves are vividly depicted in the soughing string accompaniment of the tenor aria. Jesus's words Ihr Kleinglaubigen, warum seid ihr so furchtsam? [You of little faith, why are you so fearful?] are set as a bass arioso at the center of the cantata; they provide the turning point. In the subsequent bass aria, the towering seas are silenced. A recitative - Wohl mir [Well for me] - leads into the closing chorale with its certainty Unter deinen Schirmen bin ich vor den Sturmen aller Feinde frei [Under Your protection I am spared the tempests of my enemies]. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3108100.

Translation: Engl. (S. Wadsworth) (1988) / (Norbert Rubesaat) (1993); French (Jean-Pierre Wurtz) (1997) Place and time: Jail Munchen-Stadelheim, in the hour before the execution on 22nd February 1943 Characters: Sophie Scholl (soprano) / Hans Scholl (baritone or tenor) >>Weisse Rose<< (White Rose) was the name of the resistance group to which Hans and Sophie Scholl belonged. Udo Zimmermann's composition is characterized by the varying structure of its scenes: dramatic, visionary scenes, e.g. the remembered wartime experiences on the front, Sophie's anxiety about the removal of the children and the wish to see her parents one last time, contrast with contemplative monologues that are intended to provide insights into the individual's particular situation. The composer interweaves into the structure of the piece dream sequences with sudden bursts of anxiety that are not triggered by the execution that is about to take place but by the consequences of one's own actions. The result is a deliberate fusion of the various parts into one another. More than 100 different productions prove that the topic is as important as ever and that the work is both artistically rewarding and practicable. Udo Zimmermann About the piece Two young people, the siblings Sophie and Hans Scholl, are in a prison cell, one hour before they are to be put to death by their fascist executioners. Their christian convictions and sense of responsibility gave them the courage to put up resistance, resistance against the lies, the contempt for humanity and all human values. Sophie and Hans Scholl took their stand in the full knowledge that they were taking a deadly risk. They would simply not have been able to live with their feelings of shame had they not grasped the chance of fighting for what they believed in, even though it was a dangerous thing to do. Memories of past events, doubts, hopes and fears, justification of deeds and an acceptance of death, all these things happen and move in, and between, these two people during this representation of the hour before death. The orchestra provides a psycho-physical shorthand of their inner mental state. Musical effects and gestures search for their identity in human behaviour. The moments of stillness and silence provide moments of musical tension, which are just as powerful as the eruptions of fear and desperation. Familiar hymn tune This reflection on the hymn tune ST. COLUMBA and the historic text based on the 23rd Psalm features climbing bass notes with flowing LV arpeggios. As we envision the verse in death's dark vale, I fear no ill, the key changes to minor, emphasized by optional handchimes. An echo effect is introduced and provides an engaging serene assurance throughout. As the piece concludes we rejoice in the Good Shepherd who tenderly cares for his flock, calming our fears and saving us by grace.

Vertigo is a remarkable confrontation with oneself, and with ones own capacities. Sartre defines it not so much as the fear of falling into an abyss as the fear of throwing oneself into it. Similarly, A. Glucksmann defines it as the fear of that other Self, the self one would be a moment later. Moving from ones potential to other potential selves, plunging into the unknown, this was the experimental phase of my state of mind during the composition, and is reflected in the writing of diverse textures, the ordering of the dynamics and the frequent microtonal changes of intervals. This is perhaps made particularly clear in the structure of the works first half, called Successive Figures, from which I could not free myself, psychologically, until the composition was finished. In the thrill of vertigo, and in opposition to Glucksmanns reactionary book of the same name, this is an about-turn towards the following radical principle: action rather than vertigo!... The new millennium inspires curiosity, optimism, and fear of the unknown. Belgian composer Johan Nij composed Millennium Fear to capture the uncertainty of this monumental event. The piece combines dynamic sounds, feverish rhythms, and surprising sound textures in the dialogues between different instrument groups. The piece expresses the thoughts and feelings many have toward the new millennium.

Courage Can Cry is an album about victory over adversity. It glories in the triumph of the human spirit as the ghosts of fear are laid to rest. These are songs that will prompt you to rediscover the courage that lies beneath the surface of your soul. You will be inspired by the lives of many who dared to give a voice to those who have none. An ancient French writer, Blaise Paschal, who wrote, “We should always keep something beautiful in our hearts,†was the inspiration for many of the texts. These songs are meant to awaken hope and a new awareness of all that lies beneath and within, and they will help you realize that courage can cry louder than any fear or fault.

Arachnophobia - fear of spiders - is the title of one of Maxime Aulio's first compositions for saxophone quartet (SATB). It is a simple musical amusement and a humorous allusion to the composer's fear of spiders. Come forth intrepid saxophone players!

Inspired by the empowering poem by Rabbi Ruth Sohn, this piece for SSA choir with piano describes the journey of a young woman who finds bravery amid uncertainty and fear. Middle Eastern harmonies paint an expansive desert landscape, while the voices search for faith and risk taking the first step, ultimately conquering fear to find the song in my heart. Soaring melodies and choral rhythms that create a delicious tension against the piano accompaniment make this a wonderful choice for mature treble choirs.

Latin.
The text for the choral work 'Hominis dies' is partly form the book of psalms, partly from Isaiah in the Latin translation of the Bible. The words are relevant today - they are about the fate of humanity - our fear of war and destruction, violence and polution. The choral work is divided in three parts, all of them introduced with a Halleluja. A Halleluja is most often a praise, but that is not the case in this work, where the suppressed and oppressed manking with this work express desperation and sorrow, but also hope.
