It is the new, young Finland that will be described, and the composer gives us the description in the form of a song, a simple, four-part chorus, peculiar due to certain rhythmic accents [...]. It is a whole new folk song, or more correctly, [...] the song of our democratic Finnish folk. This is how Karl Flodin described his first aural impression of the tone poem Finlandia in 1899. In the aftermath of the February Manifesto implemented on 15 February 1899 by the Russian Emperor Nicholas II, artists expressed their support for the press and the freedom of speech in diverse cultural events arranged in Finland in the beginning of November 1899. A group of artists joined forces in arranging a performance of six historical tableaus. Jean Sibelius composed Music for the Press Celebration Days for this occasion. After several revisions, the music composed for the last tableau, Suomi heraa (Finland Awakes), became known as the tone poem Finlandia op. 26. As an independent work Finlandia quickly became part of the repertoire and is now one of the most frequently played and best known works by Sibelius. Today there are quite a number of arrangements of this popular composition. The original version is now published in our established Urtext-quality based on the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works.Compatible with the study score PB 3318.

The Famous One in the Leading EditionBeethoven spent a relatively long time on his 5th Symphony. Thus, first sketches can already be found from as early as 1804, four years before the work was premiered in Vienna in December 1808. Not only impressive is its striking opening theme, letting everyone know immediately that this is Beethoven being played, but also its nickname symphony of fate. Nothing in the sources prefigures the much-cited fate, musically knocking here at the door. The autograph of the score and the set of parts prepared from it, including Beethoven's revisions, serve as the main sources of this Urtext edition, together with the missing copy of the score, now extant only incomplete in photographs, and the original edition of the parts authorized by Beethoven. The new performance material is based on the recently published volume of the New Beethoven Complete Edition.

From the cantata Little Lion, Little Lamb, the contours of this reimagined carol are fashioned with beautiful arching leaps, instantly endearing it to the listener. A good balance of unison and four-part writing expresses the miracle of the incarnation with sensitivity and sincere devotion. The B section offers some theater with distinctive layers of Gloria that crescendo with impressive impact. The final angelic proclamation fades into the Christmas sky with delicate and artful sonority. Heavenly! Richard Wagner (1813-1883) is rightly considered as the 19th-century music dramatist whose formal and harmonic originality, for example in Tristan and Isolde, provided a significant impetus to the development of 20th-century music. Despite Wagner's fame, his reuvre for piano remains practically unknown. Tobe sure, these primarily early works and occasional compositions hardly even hint at the outstanding characteristics of the later works such as leit-motifs, flowing transitions or original forms. Nonetheless, whoever is acquainted with Wagner's later music dramas will undoubtedly not fail to be impressed by the individual melodic and harmonic traits of his piano works. The Sonata in B-flat Major Op. 1 is of special interest to us today since it is Wagner's first published work, composed in 1831 and printed in 1832 by Breitkopf & Hartel. At that time, Wagner was studying counterpoint with Theodor Weinlig, the choral master and music director of the Thomasschule in Leipzig. Weinlig, however, only agreed to give Wagner lessons if he promised to refrain from composing for half a year. In the course of his studies, Wagner was allowed to compose the piano sonata in B-flat Major as a kind of journeyman-work. His teacher Weinlig succeeded in having the work published by Breitkopf & Hartel. Hence the dedication of this piece to Weinlig is not surprising, since the 18-year-old Wagner would otherwise have had great difficulty finding a publisher. This Sonata in B-flat Major, which has long been out of print, is a reproduction of the first edition by Breitkopf & Hartel (plate number 10433). For this reprint, obvious typographical errors have been corrected (missing or wrong accidentals and dynamic indications). The work presents a four-movement classical sonata form and is stylistically reminiscent of Mozart and Beethoven. Shortly before composing this sonata, Wagner wrote a piano reduction of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which was easily playable and yet gratifying to hear. This helps explain the octave-doublings typical of piano reductions. Wiesbaden, Fall 1980Respectfully dedicated to Theodor Weinlig, the choral master and music director of the Thomasschule in Leipzig.

In 1892 Dvorak received a prestigious commission from New York to write a festive cantata to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America. In response he wrote an impressive work in a very short space of time - his Te Deum, which expresses in celebratory style the old hymn of praise in four effective, contrasting sections. In preparing the Carus edition, a careful assessment has been made of the variant readings of the autograph score and first printed edition, drawing on these as sources. The result is that the work is newly available in a modern, scholarly edition. The complete performance material is available on sale. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2718900.

Charles Gounod composed this Requiem under the impact of the death of his four-year-old grandson, Maurice. According to information handed down, while finishing the details of this work he was overtaken by death. It was published posthumously in various constellations by his pupil, Henri Busser, but the only complete version from the pen of Gounod is the version for large orchestra, which is published here for the first time in a critical edition. Gounod's Requiem, unlike many contemporary settings of the Mass of the Dead, is not characterized by darkness and terror. Rather, with all of its trepidation - expressed through a marked chromaticism - an atmosphere of hopeful expectation, of trust in the grace and equity of the divine judge predominates. This confidence finds its expression in the choice of the fundamental key of C major, which is rather unusual for a requiem. The work was given an impressive performance on the occasion of the first anniversary of Gounod's death in the Parisian church of Sainte-Madeleine under the direction of Gabriel Fauré and it was highly acclaimed by the contemporary press. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2731500.

The Castle of Allymes, “castrum Alemorumâ€, located on a hill in the centre of the seigneury of Allymes (France) is an historic castle dating back to the fourteenth century, rebuilt in the sixteenth century and restored in the nineteenth. This piece evokes an image of the castle, its beautiful location within the surrounding landscape and its importance for the rural district of Ambérieu-en-Bugey. Combining beautiful melodies with rhythmical sections and modern sounds with passages in a renaissance style, this work of Jacob de Haan is an impressive musical challenge that is both fun to play as well as appealing for your audience: as you listen you can almost see the castlebefore your eyes. Think of a magnificent entrance to a city or castle, such as the fictitious Camelot. This is the impression composer Larry Clark is trying to convey with this strong, new piece for strings. Based upon intervals of fifths and fourths, the main melodic material is confident yet joyful, contrasted with a lush B section and a robust C section in a minor key. It is sophisticated music for young groups, but still something they will love to play. This piece is good example of why Larry's music is so popular year after year.

1st complete perf: Catherine Gordeladze, The Gasteig, Munich (Winners & Masters Series), 21 April 2007 Ideal for confident young pianists keen to explore cutting-edge new music, the second book of Strides by Morgan Hayes adds five more distinctively original miniatures to the three 'fugitive visions' already published in Strides Book 1. Propulsive rhythm and melody mark out turbid expressive territory in the first two pieces, while the third Stride explores 'glacial' octaves, and the fourth and fifth add new fantasy to a Bach sarabande and a chaconne. Specific technical challenges in each piece test the reflex and stamina of players of Grade 6 standard and above, who will also enjoy the impressive virtuoso impact Strides deliver in performance.

Despite an impressive body of work, little is known about German composer Emilie Mayer (1812-1883). Mayer studied composition with Carl Loewe after the death of her parents, writing a total of eight symphonies, eight violin sonatas, twelve cello sonatas, six piano trios, seven string quartets, seven orchestral overtures, and numerous works for piano and voice. Mayer's works were acclaimed in Germany and she toured frequently performing her music, an unheard of practice for a single woman at the time. Regrettably, however, most of her work remained unpublished at the time of her death. Written in her 30s, Mayer's stormy fourth and final movement from her second symphony reveals her bold Romantic style and growing confidence as a composer. Arranged for string orchestra and timpani, this movement was painstakingly drawn from the handwritten score, offering a profound opportunity for students to experience the music of this incredible composer for the first time.

Reflecting the psalm text, the composer Matsushita constantly finds new ways of expressing the praise of God. In the swinging rhythm of the 6/8 meter, with its dotted rhythms full of brio and binary pulse in counterpoint, with flashing dissonances through the almost oriental use of chromatic intervals, with sharply juxtaposed bitonal chords, and with the consonant-rich text, rapidly sung, the composer achieves an impressive, virtuoso showpiece which accomplished choirs can use to show off the full range of their abilities. Along the way Matsushita never writes unnecessarily complicated music, but music which is always based on his own practical experience as a choral director. In a rondo-like form he finds a parallel for the repetitions of unceasing praise. Matsushita sets the text syllabically throughout, but uses its tonal colors to give character to the individual sections. For example, the fanfare-like opening motif alternates with a crescendo section, which draws its energy from the contrast between declamatory vocal parts over a pedal point in diminished and augmented leaps of a third, fourth and fifth. Voice range: S: c' - b'' / A: asdeg - e'' / T: cdeg - gis' / B: F- e'.
