Spanish composer Leonardo Balada dresses Bach's melodies in musical finery that examines thematic variation, shifting tonal centers, sharply contrasting timbres, and instrumental balance. Described as 'a work in continual nervous motion, full of contrasting, interlocking speeds and rhythm' by the New York Times this advanced work for Cello and Piano is an exploration of both Bach and of the two instruments. Leonardo Balada serves as University Professor of Composition at Carnegie Mellon University.

As a prestigious musician during the early 1700s, Royer's Harpsichord Pieces remains a favourite in the instrument's repertoire. Joseph Nicolas Pancrace Royer (1705-1755) was born in Turin, however, he moved to Paris in 1925 andsoon became responsible for the musical education of King Louis XV's children. Royer is particularly known for his extravagant and virtuosic Harpsichord compositions, as displayed in La Pupitre's compilation of his HarpsichordPieces. Comprising famous works by the composer, including Suite Bagatelle and March of the Scythes, the collection exemplifies the composer's skills on the Harpsichord. Royer's Harpsichord Pieces is essential to the repertoire ofaspiring advanced players of the instrument.

He was regarded as the German hope among the composers of his generation and as 'next man of New Music', but his early death quashed all such hopes of the music scene: Rudi Stephan died at the early age of 28, leaving behind instrumental works as well as some songs in which he admitted expressionist concepts of art, as were later expressed mainly by the Viennese School. Clytus Gottwald has taken up the cause of transcribing two of the songs by this composer, who died in the First World War, for nine-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBBB) with solo bass in his honour. In spite of the Latin title, Memento vivere is a German-language secular song based on a text by Friedrich Hebbel which is permeated by harmonies sharpened with dissonances. The music of Kythere to words by Gerda von Robertus is characterized by the excessive use of harmonic shifts in the style of Debussy.

Vernon Park, Stockport’s oldest park, was created on land donated by Lord Vernon (George John Warren). It was built by poor mill workers who called it pinch-belly park and opened on 20th September 1858. Comprising twenty-one acres, it houses a museum, a bandstand, ornamental fountains, a fernery, rockery, borders and sunken rose garden as well terraced walkways that overlook the river and weir. The piece depicts a solitary walker engrossed in his own thoughts on a winter’s day, the landscape, and the park’s Victorian past.At the very end of the piece a reminder of the park’s Victorian origins can be detected in a quote from Elgar’s Salut d’amour of 1899, which may well have been played by a band in the bandstand. Stockport market celebrated its 750th anniversary in 2010. It dated back to September 1260 when a Royal Charter allowed Robert de Stokeport, the Mayor, to hold a weekly market within the defensive walls of the Norman Castle on the present site of Castle Yard. The Glass Umbrella was a popular name given to the 1861 covered market built of timber, glass and iron - nine bays with open sides and a glass canopy. In 1912, one bay was removed to enable electric trams and trolley buses to turn a sharp corner. The piece depicts a lively market day, the multiculturalism of the present day and the old cries of pick and pay without delay. The bells of St Mary’s Church are depicted by a cascading peel tuned to the ten bells of the church tower, and a fleeting reference to John Wainwright’s famous Christmas hymn Christians Awake, and the Westminster chimes striking the hour from St Mary’s, bring to piece to a conclusion. Separate parts are provided for recorder and oboe.

We welcome Joshua Reznicow to the Kendor family of writers with this festive original that sounds more difficult to play than it is. Written in G major and its relevant minor key, it gives directors a chance to teach both sharp and flat keys while using open strings to maintain a solid pitch center. Controlling bow speed and style using hooked bow, spiccato, and slurred techniques helps to drive the musical energy throughout. Short solos and a brief violin cadenza lead to a rewarding finish and allow more advanced players to showcase their skills. Duration ca. 3:40. Available in SmartMusic.

The composer, chorus and organist Janusz Krzysztof Korczak, who was born in Krakow in 1994, was awarded the 3rd prize at the International Composition Competition Musica Sacra Nova 2016 for his choral piece Cum enim quietum silentium contineret omnia, .... This sophisticated Latin-language choral work is designed for four four-part ensembles (SATB / SATB / SATB / SATB) a cappella, for which the Polish composer delivers an exact arrangement. The Korczak, which is divided into a number of musical thematic sections, for which Korczak foresees a maximum of four singers per voice within the individual ensembles, has, according to his own statement, musically implemented a kind of programmatic visualization of the underlying words from Liber Sapientiae 18, 14-15b searched. And so there are lecture notes such as delicate or sharp whispering, singing with closed and open mouth, ad libitum to declaiming parts, a general pause with explicit seconds, strong dynamic accents and an abrupt descending Glissando at the end of thestriking features of this 16-voice A -cappella-choral work. Ideal literature for singers with a high degree of experimentation.

Quirks—a word defined as a sudden sharp turn or an unpredictable peculiarity of behavior or action—demonstrates the capricious nature of the title in its musical character. The music vacillates between fast and slow, happy and sad, extroverted and introverted, and just never goes where you expect. There is plenty of interplay between winds and percussion as the four and three notes of the main motive are tossed about the many instrumental colors. This is a tour-de-force, destined to become a band standard for more advanced bands. You must give this a careful listen.

Composed in 2004 for baritone Wolfgang Holzmair, Leisner's A Timeless Procession was premiered in 2011 with Thomas Meglioranza and the ENSO String Quartet at Symphony Space (New York City). Of that premiere, Art Leonard writes, The centerpiece of the program was the world premiere of Mr. Leisner's composition for baritone and string quartet, A Timeless Procession, setting a lengthy narrative poem by Rosemary Thomas about the parade of elephants past Carngie Hall when the circus came to town. This provided a nice balance of drama and humor... Of the music, itself, Leisner says, [Rosemary Thomas'] poem, The Elephants Pass Carnegie Hall, begins with an image, maybe real, maybe surreal, of circus elephants parading by Carnegie Hall, and ends with a sharp, mystical left turn into the prehistoric times of their ancestors. My piece views the poem through the lens of time - beginning with a primordial awakening, progressing into real time (the parade of elephants), and then through slow motion, frozen time, a return to real time (but with a surreal overlay of baritone falsetto), and finally, in the canonic last section, time past. For advanced performers.

Arrangements for the piano, transcriptions and opera paraphrases take up a large part in Franz Liszt's complete ouvre. He even arranged scenes from the music dramas of Richard Wagner. The transcription of 'Lied an den Abendstern' comes from the third act of the romantic opera Tannhauser und der Sangerkrieg auf Wartburg. In his transcription of 1849 Liszt kept exactly to Wagner's original but he divided the scene into 'Recitative' and 'Romance'. He transposed the piece to the keys of G sharp minor and A flat major, which sound warmer on the piano and which also allow for a more easy-to-play romantic piano setting. Liszt uses the cantilena of the violoncellos in Wagner's original as tonal highlight with octaves in the descant. A transcription that is beautiful to listen to for both pianist and audience and perfectly suitable for concert performances and recitals.

The set of 24 Preludes for Piano, Op. 34 was composed in the winter of 1932-33. They represent all of the major and minor keys, inviting comparisons with similar collections by Bach and Chopin. Each movement has its own individual mood and there are sharp contrasts within each movement and between movements in style, rhythm and harmony. James Markey has brilliantly arranged eleven of these movements for Tenor Trombone and Piano for virtuoso level performers. The entire work is about 17 minutes in length. We are grateful to the Shostakovich estate and G. Schirmer for authorizing Mr. Markey's arrangement. Mr. Markey and pianist Virginia Perry can be heard performing this arrangement of the Preludes on his CD entitled Offroad released in 2003, which happens to be sold by Cherry Classics Music on this site and also available on iTunes and other music retailers.

The Masterpiece Edition series, published exclusively by Santorella Publications, is a collection of original piano works, as well as challenging arrangements and transcriptions designed for the experienced to advanced pianist. The series is meticulously engraved and printed on heavy cover stock and quality paper to last for generations. With original works from the great masters, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and alike, as well as arrangements and transcriptions from some of the greatest works of all time, these Masterpiece Editions are sure to be popular favorites while enhancing the repertoire of most any serious pianist. In this case, we are extremely proud to release the original, unedited, Masterpiece Edition of Joplin's Entertainer and Maple Leaf Rag as a 2 in 1 sheet in its purest form. Our ultimate goal is to emphasize the necessity of exceptional quality in printed sheet music. Time has heard the strains of a myriad of musical styles. Some styles liven with age while others fade. The same is true of the composers themselves; some are regarded as brilliant masters from the beginning of their lives while others are praised only posthumously. Endurance is the ultimate test. Scott Joplin endured great injustices and criticism, yet he remains the King of Ragtime. We remember the genius of Scott Joplin by publishing The Entertainer and Maple Leaf Rag in this 2 in 1 original edition. Joplin's most popular rag, The Entertainer reached high acclaim in 1973 as a recognizable theme from the film classic, The Sting. This Academy Award-Winning film was solely responsible for the resurgence of ragtime in general, but more specifically brought renewed interest in the works of Scott Joplin. The Maple Leaf Rag, unlike so many others, became quite popular during Joplin's lifetime, so much so that it was the first sheet of music to sell over one million copies. We are pleased to combine these two rags in one as a special part of our Masterpiece Ragtime Selections. This newly engraved edition is clean, sharp, distinct, and accurate. An absolute pleasure to read as each crisp note seems to pop off the page.

A concert march in the classic tradition, this piece is ideal for your festival program. Written in the key of Eb, the difficult key change at the trio is avoided by a modulation to Bb, instead of the traditional Ab. The D.S. al fine helps this piece come together with minimum rehearsal time and maximum result. Consider even using the opening section as a school fight song!
