Diptyque is the French word for “diptych,” meaning a hinged two-part image. The first section of this two-part musical painting has an Oriental feel, with characteristic pentatonic melody lines and chords. The second section is a cheerful Saltarello dance that brings out the subtleties of the woodwind section. A juxtaposition of Eastern and Western music, Diptyque reminds listeners of the power of music in transcending all cultural, religious and political boundaries.

Diptyque is het Franse woord voor ‘diptychon’, een ander woord voor tweeluik. Het eerste deel van dit muzikale beeld heeft oriëntaalse flair. Karakteristieke pentatonische melodielijnen en akkoorden voeren de boventoon. Hettweede deel vormt qua stijl en karakter een groot contrast, het is een levendige saltarello waarin de kwaliteiten van de houtblazers goed naar voren komen. En de muzikale boodschap? Deze prachtige combinatie van oosterse en westersemuziek neemt alle culturele, religieuze en politieke grenzen weg!

Diptyque ist das französische Wort für Diptychon“, ein zweiteiliges Bild. Der erste Teil dieses zweiteiligen musikalischen Bildes hat ein orientalisches Flair mit charakteristischen pentatonischen Melodielinien und Akkorden. Im Kontrast dazu ist der zweite Teil ein heiterer Saltarello-Tanz, der die Finessen der Holzbläser hervorhebt. Die Botschaft dieser Nebeneinanderstellung östlicher und westlicher Musik ist, dass die Musik alle kulturellen, religiösen oder politischen Grenzen aufzuheben vermag!

Diptyque est un titre parfaitement adapté cette composition en deux parties. Le premier tableau, majestueux, s’inspire d’une ancienne chanson enfantine intitulée Akkatobai, et dont l’origine est rattachée la ville de Nagasaki. Le second tableau offre un joyeux contraste en termes de style et tempo. Gai et lumineux, il reflète l’île méridionale de Kyushu, où se trouve Nagasaki. Une légère et allègre saltarelle met en valeur la virtuosité des bois. La juxtaposition des deux volets de ce diptyque symbolise l’entente.

Singapore Rhapsody is an exciting work in two movements based on popular Malaysian folksongs. The songs that occur in the first movement are Rasa Sayang eh (a love song), Gelang Sipaku Gelang (a song about community spirit), Suriram (a song about a girl proclaiming her virtues) and Di-Tanjung Katong (a love song that takes place at the Cape Katong on the southeast coast of Singapore). The second movement features Lenggang Kangkung, which literally means “The swaying of the watercress,” Katang Lompat (a moralistic song about the symbolism of the frog) and finally Kenek kenek-lah Udang (a wedding song). Each movement of this enchanting work can be performed separately but acomplete performance will be the crowning moment of any concert.

Singapour, la cité du Lion, est l’un des plus importants carrefours d’Asie. Singapour mélange habilement les cultures chinoises, malaises, indiennes et occidentales. La musique traditionnelle est l’image de la multiethnicité de cette ville-état. Les deux mouvements de cette composition s’inspirent de chants traditionnels malais. Le premier mouvement développe quatre chants traditionnels de caractère contrastant et contrasté. Le second mouvement est basé sur les chants Lenggang Kangkung (qui dépeint le gracieux mouvement du cresson de rizière), Katang Lompat (une chanson moraliste qui évoque le symbolisme de la grenouille) et un chant de mariage. Il primo movimento sviluppa quattro canti tradizionali di carattere contrastante e contrastato. Singapura Suite was commissioned by Singapore's Ministry of Education Extracurricular Activities Branch to serve as a compulsory piece for the 1999 Singapore Youth Festival.Singapura is the original name of Singapore in Malay, the native language there. Because Singapore is one of the most important harbors in the world, this two-piece work opens with a seaman's dance. An authentic melody, Chan Mali Chan, is woven into the middle of this first part, whose ABA form becomes clear through the recapitulation of the seaman's dance in a somewhat altered form.Singapore is also a dynamic city-state alive with excitement, thus the second part begins with a fitting dance, a fastbourrée. As contrast there is a second authentic melody, Dayung Sampan, a more easygoing sailing song. This short but curious suite ends in high spirits with a recapitulation of the beginning.

‘Singapura’ is de oorspronkelijke naam van Singapore in het Maleis, de originele taal van deze stadstaat. Omdat Singapore een van de belangrijkste havens ter wereld is, opent de componist met een ‘zeemansdans’. Ook de authentiekemelodie Chan Mali Chan is te herkennen. Het dynamische aspect van Singapore wordt verbeeld in een snelle bourree, gevolgd door een contrasterend authentiek en rustig bootslied: Dayung Sampan.
