Commissioned by the Northern Michigan University Jazz Ensemble, this jubilant tone poem portrays the Great Northern Railway that ran for a century from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean. Beginning quietly in the distance, the chart builds steadily through a series of colorful variations and roars by at full throttle five minutes later. The fast swing train groove drops a beat every four measures (4-4-4-3) from start to finish. This is truly a marvel of modern jazz ensemble writing for proficient groups by one of the nation's most innovative composers. Duration 6:00.

Ryan Fraley's arrangement of Camille Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre transforms the iconic nineteenth-century supernatural tone poem into a dynamic 1930s hot-jazz piece reminiscent of Django Reinhardt's swing style. The work brings the haunting themes to life, set against compelling backbeats. It features skillfully written solos for plunger trumpet and trombone, an open solo section for improvisation (transcribed solos provided), and a sizzling sax soli, inviting musicians to delve into a fusion of classical sophistication and the exuberant spirit of early jazz. Top trumpet note: F-sharp 5.

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of a 20th century masterwork with this authentic retelling of Long Distance Runaround, originally recorded by British progressive rock band Yes. An iconic moment in pop and rock history is scored neatly for big band with the option to feature either a vocalist or tenor sax soloist. Just like the original, powered by bass guitar and sprightly jazz drums, this version captures the spirit of adventurous art rock. Two, brief open solos for any instrument cap the long outro.

First released in 1954, this setting of the 19th-century folk song popularized by Glenn Miller in 1939 begins with an 8-bar marcato intro before settling into the familiar swing groove. The thematic build is gradual and dramatic -- saxes alone, then saxes with trombones, then saxes, trombones and trumpets together -- and the finishing shout is loud and strong. All rhythm section parts are fully notated, brass ranges are very accessible, and no improvisation is required. Duration 2:05.
