This volume of the National Edition is published in the Series B which contains works published posthumously. The basis for this edition is taken from the original sources, i.e. autographs, copies and prints corrected by the composer or, if possible, other reliable sources. All the changes and supplementations - if they are necessary - are graphically distinguished from the text. In the Source Commentaries musicologists will find fundamental information about the sources together with an evaluation of the degree of their authenticity, a description of mutual connections (called filiation) and a discussion of the more important divergences as well as the principles of editing the music text of particular works. In the music text, beside Chopin's fingering, we give, in different type, the fingering used in contemporary concert practice and the Performance Commentaries explain all these elements of music notation which may raise doubts today. They include: writing out the ornaments in full, pedalling indications, suggestions as to the realisation of harmonic legato and alternate fingering.

At first glance, this spirited work does not seem to fit the picture that Beethoven's contemporaries have passed down to us, this is why the work was long looked upon deprecatingly as a “salon pieceâ€. In fact, it is an “occasional†piece in the best sense of the word, having been written in winter 1814/15 for the Russian Czar Alexander I's wife, a great admirer of Beethoven's music. The Czarina was sojourning in the Austrian capital at the time of the Congress of Vienna. The superficial impression of simple, stylized dance music disguises Beethoven at his most “genuineâ€, waiting to reveal some subtle motivic and thematic material.

In 1916, as part of the series Az elemi zongorajáték gyakorlati tananyaga [Practical Repertory for Elementary Piano Playing], Rózsavölgyi & Co. published Bartók's selection of twelve pieces from the collection usually given the title Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach. A revised 1923 edition added one more piece. The contents of our edition are an identical reprint of the 1923 version, including Bartók's in-depth preface in both Hungarian and German and the footnotes he added to the individual pieces (also provided here in an English translation).Johann Sebastian Bach gave his second wife Anna Magdalena two manuscript music-books which contain, besides his own works, compositions by other contemporaries. The present selection includes 13 pieces from the second book (dated to 1725).

Eugen d'Albert (1864-1932) enjoyed an illustrious and colourful career as both concert pianist and composer. He wished to include J.S. Bach's music in his concerts and sought the grandeur of some of the large secular organ works. The transcriptions he made for this purpose are arguably better than the numerous Bach transcriptions made by his contemporaries. D'Albert's versions of eight secular masterworks present them remarkably close to their original form, yet perfectly matched to the modern piano. At times, they make very considerable technical demands, but the effort to master them is amply rewarded. This 116-page volume marks their first appearance since they were first issued over a century ago. Many errors and inaccuracies have been remedied and English translations of his musical terms have been provided.

Two manuscript collections survive from the estate of Johann Sebastian Bach's second wife, Anna Magdalena. One of these dates from 1722, and one from 1725. The music they contain is very varied: alongside Johann Sebastian's own pieces there are dance and song movements that can be ascribed to his contemporaries, and also works of doubtful authorship. This publication includes the instrumental pieces from the two collections that do not feature in sets of pieces such as the French Suites. The editors have not added performance indications to the musical text, and fingering is suggested only in the more difficult passages. This publication features in the Hungarian curriculum forpreliminary level education in the arts. The pieces can be used as teaching material in the third and fourth years of learning the piano.
