Ferdinand Küchler is regarded as one of the great violin teachers of the 20th century. Apart from his Violin Method, it is, above all, his concertinos that are an absolute must for the development of any violin pupil, especially his famous Concertino in G major Op. 11 (Schott SE 1001) as well as his Concertino in D major Op. 15 which both enjoy great popularity. Composed “in the style of Antonio Vivaldiâ€, the work has, without doubt, been one of the most frequently played works in student violin literature for decades. It is the perfect educational link to Vivaldi's somewhat more difficult “student concertosâ€. The completely baroque-style movements appeal to every pupil. The fast outer movements contain rewarding, always seemingly violinistic runs and idiomatic figurations. The appeal of the slow middle movement lies in its simple, yet tonally demanding Siciliano theme. The works requires knowledge of the 2nd and 3rd positions and is here presented in a new modern edition. Bowing, articulation and fingerings are based on today's experience of interpreting Vivaldi's music, providing creative space and possibilities for personal ideas in modern violin lessons. This edition is part of the new Schott Student Edition series which offers varied literature at five different levels of difficulty, from 1 (easy) to 5 (difficult), for instrumental lessons. Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the premiere; the 'child prodigy' Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Leonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known. As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost, it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the solo violin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Leonard. The letter informs us that the composer invited Leonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Leonard. The recently discovered proofs reveal how Leonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering, they also show how Leonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown. It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn's approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter's correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Leonard's playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany. This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice. The editor, Clive Brown, is an acknowledged expert on Romantic performance practice.- New source situation owing to recently rediscovered proofs- Revised Urtext edition- With a separate booklet on performance practice (Eng/Ger).

The operas of Marius Felix Lange, especially “Snow White,†“The Canterville Ghost,†“Die Schneekönigin,†“Das Opernschiff oder Am Südpol, denkt man, ist es heisse†have been incredibly successful. Many of his operas have also been performed on foreign stages, including those in Switzerland and France. Other points of emphasis in Lange's work include orchestral compositions and Lieder. The American violinist Hilary Hahn had an unusual yet very clever idea in 2012 when she requested encore pieces from present-day composers. The cycle “In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores†were consecutively premiered by the violinist until the end of the 2012/13 season and recorded on CD. Amongst the submissions selected by Hilary Hahn during the course of an online contest, Marius Felix Lange's violin piece “Nutcracker's Nightmare†immediately ended up amongst the ten best-placed works. The title “Nutcracker's Nightmare†recalls E.T.A. Hoffmann's famous fairytale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,†the gloomily imaginative story in which a wooden toy is awakened to life and has to fight against the powers of darkness.

“Memory of a dear place†is the title given to this collection of three enchanting pieces for violin and piano. The “place†in question was the country estate of Brailov that belonged to Tchaikovsky's patron and friend Nadezhda von Meck. He stayed there in idyllic seclusion in May 1878 and completed this work. These pieces were composed very close in time to his Violin Concerto, and they too demonstrate Tchaikovsky's matchless gifts as a Romantic master of melody. For this edition, the Russian Tchaikovsky specialist Alexander Komarov offers the highest degree of editorial precision, having drawn on all the relevant sources from both Russian and international archives. In the course of his work he has also been able to disprove beyond a doubt the view held up to now that the title Souvenir d'un lieu cher was only added after Tchaikovsky's death.

This one of a kind album pairs two of the most performed Ave Maria's for violin and piano, meticulously edited by Jascha Heifetz' protege, Endre Granat. The first of these is Schubert's melody, which was originally composed as a setting of a song from Walter Scott's popular narrative poem The Lady of the Lake, titled, “Ellen's Third Song” (Ellens dritter Gesang). The opening words and refrain of Ellen's song, namely “Ave Maria” (Latin for “Hail Mary”), may have led to the idea of adapting Schubert's melody as a setting for the full text of the traditional Roman Catholic prayer. The Latin version of the song is now so frequently used with Schubert's melody that it has led to the misconception that he originally wrote the melody as a setting for the “Ave Maria.” The second Ave Maria in this collection was created when Gounod famously improvised the melody over the background of J.S. Bach's Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV 846, from The Well-Tempered Clavier. Gounod's beatiful improvisation was transcribed by his future father-in-law Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmermann, which was published with the Bach keyboard accompaniment in 1835 under the title “Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach.” Alongside Schubert's version, the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria has become a fixture at funerals, wedding masses, and quinceañeras. Both works have been recorded hundreds of times during the twentieth century.

Hans Winterberg has only recently been rediscovered as one of the most important representatives of the Czech avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century. Performed but not published during his lifetime, his works were locked away after his death due to tragic circumstances and are now being published for the first time in a collaboration between the Exilarte Centre of the Vienna University of Music and Boosey and Hawkes. In contrast to his colleagues and friends Ullmann, Haas, Krása and Klein, Winterberg survived the Shoah through a series of miracles. As a student of Alexander Zemlinsky and Alois Hába, he is both a successor to Janácek and a member of the wider circle of the Second Viennese School. The Sonata for Violin and Piano, written and premièred in Prague in 1936, is one of the most important chamber music works of the pre-war period. It exhibits all the characteristics of Winterberg's personal style: a sensuality of sound grounded in French Impressionism with a simultaneous expressionist rigour of harmony, a small-scale motivic structure, a sophisticated play with polyrhythmic patterns and, especially in the last movement, a musical impetus borrowed from Czech folklore.

Again and again composers have been inspired by the animal world and have represented the nature of the most diverse animals in music - be it locomotion, such as the flight of a butterfly or the wriggling of a trout, or the imagery of an animal character. For this thematic volume with a classic-romantic focus, Wolfgang Birtel made arrangements for violin and piano and brought together original works.

Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) is most known for his hundreds of lieds and song cycles. His instrumental compositions have been less know, ie. the six piano sonatas and suite for gamba and piano. Large-scale Sonata for violin and piano is dated in 1935 with opus number 87. The work was never finished, and National Library in Helsinki holds several sketches and versions in its Kilpinen collection. In 2015 violinist Frida Backman commissioned a completion of the Sonata from composer Walter Wolff. Wolff worked on the sketches and versions until 2018, when the work was completed and the Sonata premiered. The present publication is the first publication of the Sonata. It sheds light to Kilpinen as an instrumental composer. The movements are: Allegro - Andante - Andante Moderato - Allegro --- Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) tunnetaan lähinnä lied-sävellyksistään, joita aktiivisina sävellysvuosina syntyikin satoja. Teoksen osat: Allegro - Andante - Andante Moderato - Allegro.

Black Cat - behind the title, one may rightly assume an allusion to the composer's surname, which comes from the Russian language. Elena Kats-Chernin indulges her passion for ragtime and tango in this ironically nostalgic miniature. The customers of the famous Parisian Belle Époque cabaret “Le Chat Noir†would have been pleased! The sensual mewing of the black cat is expressed in the portamenti of the violin part, even better than in the version for piano solo (BB3434), which is available as well.

Alexis Weissenberg (1929-2012) numbers among the most prominent pianists of the 20th Century. That he was also a composer is less well known, though he wrote a whole series of works, notably for his own instrument, the piano (Piano Works, Schott ED 22923). His Romance for violin and piano may be considered something of a rarity. Musical child prodigy Alexis wrote this little Romantic piece in March 1943 in Jerusalem, where he and his mother had fled from Sofia following their internment as descendants of Jews. The Romance is a melancholy 'Song Without Words', simple and poignant in effect. This first edition is based on the original manuscript. Editorial changes have been marked in brackets.

The Kreutzer Sonata was originally dedicated not to Rudolphe Kreutzer (who never performed it) but to George Bridgetower, a famed 18th-century Afro-European concert violinist. In an early draft, Beethoven jokingly labeled the piece in starkly racialized terms: Sonata Mulattica composed for the mulatto Brischdauer, big wild mulatto composer.Beethoven and Bridgetower performed the premiere, which was by all accounts a success, and even featuring some improvised embellishment by the violinist. While celebrating afterwards, the two quarreled about what Beethoven construed as Bridgetower's insult of a female acquaintance; the composer then revoked the original dedication, adding Kreutzer's name instead. The work gained acclaim, while Bridgetower's career languished; he eventually died in poverty.Bridgetower has been the subject of considerable research and speculation, most notably in poet Rita Dove's book, Sonata Mulattica. From our 21st-century vantage, considering Bridgetower's unique circumstance, we can only see him as an ambiguous figure who, in embodying difference, provoked inspiration, fantasy, desire, anger and, finally, erasure. My piece is a collection of imaginings about George Bridgetower. It is not programmatic, but it takes on an episodic character, assembled from contrasting fragments. The dance rhythms, recurring figures and gestural contours are intended to feature the embodied expertise and expressivity of the performers, who at times must access liminal sounds and execute complex synchronies. I am grateful to Jenny Koh and Shai Wosner for involving me in their beautiful, virtuosic music-making.
