Both of the Kyrie settings in E flat major K. 322 (1778/79) and C major K. 323 (probably not prior to 1790) belong to those works by Mozart which were only handed down as incomplete draft scores. However, in both cases Mozart's original drafts were so extensive and well advanced that Abbe Maximilian Stadler, Mozart's friend and known from the history associated with the Requiem, could complete both settings. In 1830, for the first edition of the Kyrie K. 323 Stadler employed the text of the Marian Antiphon for Easter Regina coeli laetare for the vocal parts. The Carus edition presents both the original text (Kyrie), as well as the text from the first edition (Regina coeli), so that the work may be performed in the Mass or in the context of a solemn Vespers during the time of Easter. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5132300.

With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.7005300.

This hymn-anthem tells the astounding story of the God who is revered by all of creation- earth, sea, and sky- choosing Mary to be the mother of the Savior. The mixed meters employed for the 6th-century poetry are anything but jarring, and the middle stanza is set to different music with a medieval feel that accentuates the repetition of the word blest to describe Mary's destiny. A delightful but substantial anthem useful for Marian feasts as well as Christmastide. The keyboard part works well on both organ and piano. Congregational participation is welcome but not required; reprint material is included.

Hailstork is one of a handful of American composers invited to create a 21st century string quartet based upon songs of the African Diaspora. His choice of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot has led to an evocative, but moving string quartet. Also available for string orchestra, on a rental basis. For advanced performers. Duration: 15'.

Young children would enjoy creating this pantomime version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in Four Acts and a Tableau. The lyrics are straightforward, though the topical references to Frankie Laine and Eisenhower would benefit from updating.

Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 is a work which has both fascinated and perplexed musicologists and performers for many years. It forms by far the larger part of the composer's first significant publication of sacred music, entitled: Of the most blessed virgin a Mass for six voices for church choirs, and Vespers for more voices with several sacred concertos suitable for princely chapels or apartments. By the time this publication appeared, Monteverdi had been in the service of the Gonzaga court at MantUrauffuhrung for at least 18 years, and he was seeking a change of employment, so that the dedication of the volume to the reigning pope, Paul V, may be interpreted as a form of self-advertisement. Originally issued as an Urtext study score, the edition is based closely on the extant printed source, the set of partbooks published at Venice in 1610, and retains the original note values, key and mensuration signatures.

The unbroken popularity of Vanhal's sole double bass concerto in competitions and for practice and concert purposes is reason enough for us to publish the work in Breitkopf Urtext. The edition profits from Tobias Glockler's experience of many years. As with the other great double-bass concertos of the classical Viennese repertoire (Dittersdorf, Hoffmeister), Glockler arrives at convincing solutions. He began by filtering out a solid musical text from the source (which was not always free of contradictions) that was supplied with many additions. The disposition of the solo part required detailed knowledge of performance practice, since the work was written in the historical Viennese double bass tuning, and a few passages cannot be played without difficulty on a modern instrument. As with Dittersdorf and Hoffmeister, the piano reduction makes it possible to use three different double-bass tunings (solo, orchestral and Viennese). Moreover, it contains the editor's virtuoso cadenzas as well.I have performed the Vanhal in Viennese tuning and it was my thesis topic so I am thrilled to see an edition that makes this tuning so accessible. I highly recommend this all-encompassing edition. (Marian Heckenburg, Stringendo).
