On the 6th of April 1999, exactly 25 years after ABBA had won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Waterloo, the musical Mamma Mia! opened in London. The funny and appealing love story, based on 22 ABBA classics, became an immediate success. Arranger Peter Kleine Schaars has selected five of the most famous titles from the musical, added the hit Waterloo and used his musical imagination. The result is a catchy ABBA medley that will appeal to young and old.

Op 6 april 1999, precies 25 jaar nadat Abba het Eurovisie Songfestival won met Waterloo, werden in Londen de deuren geopend voor de musical Mamma Mia! Al snel werd het onderhoudende liefdesverhaal - gebaseerd op 22 klassiekersvan Abba - een groot succes. Peter Kleine Schaars selecteerde vijf titels uit de musical, voegde de wereldhit Waterloo toe en liet zijn muzikale fantasie de vrije loop. Het resultaat is een dynamische Abba-medleymet de nummers Mamma Mia, Knowing Me, Knowing You, Money, Money, Money, Dancing Queen, I Do, I Do, I Do en Waterloo.

25 Jahre nachdem ABBA den Grand Prix d'Eurovision mit dem Lied Waterloo gewonnen hatte, fand die Uraufführung des Musicals Mamma Mia! in London statt. Die mitreißende Liebesgeschichte, basierend auf 22 ABBA-Klassikern, wurde schnell zu einem großen Erfolg. Peter Kleine Schaars wählte die sechs berühmtesten Titel aus dem Musical, ergänzte sie um den Welthit Waterloo, und ließ seiner musikalischen Phantasie freien Lauf. Das Ergebnis ist ein raffiniertes ABBA-Medley, das Jung und Alt anspricht.

The Anglo Saxon riddles are perhaps more familiar to us than the source from which this riddle is taken (Symphosius). I have always sought opportunities to set Latin and given the international character of the summer school for which it was written, Latin was a useful lingua franca. First performed in July 1998 by Trio Mediaeval on the Hilliard Summer School at St. Johns College, Cambridge.

The Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka was a double bass player and church music composer at the Saxon court of the Elector August the Strong and his son Friedrich August II. In the years after 1721 he composed an extensive repertoire of Catholic church music together with the Kapellmeister Johann David Heinichen. These works, together with the Dresden operas composed by Johann Adolf Hasse in quick succession from 1731 onwards, established the reputation of the Saxon court as one of the most important musical centers of the late Baroque period. Zelenka composed this psalm setting De profundis in D minor ZWV 97 in 1724 on the death of his father, including a concluding Requiem verse. This was later replaced by the lesser doxology so that the work can be performed in the office of Christmas week. Both endings are included in this new edition. Three trombones, used as an independent instrumental group, give the work a special tonal color. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4006400.

Much like a film score, Peter Kleine Schaars’ composition paints colourful images while telling the story of the Anglo-Saxon monk, Lebu nus. In around 768 AD, Lebu nus founded a mission in the Dutch province of Deventer in an effort to convert the Pagan Saxons. Contrasting themes describe the Ijssel Valley, the Saxons and Lebu nus, construction on the church and its subsequent destruction in a clash with the Saxons. The Ijssel-Valley-theme returns one more time in a minor key before each of the themes come together again for one rousing finale. Let battle commence!

Deze filmmuziekachtige compositie vertelt de geschiedenis van de Angelsaksische monnik Lebu nus. Rond het jaar 768 stichtte hij in Deventer een kerk met het doel de heidense Saksische bevolking te bekeren. Op elkaar volgende contrastrijkethema’s geven een muzikale verbeelding van het IJsseldal, de Saksen en Lebu nus, de bouw van de kerk en de verwoesting ervan in de strijd tegen de Saksen. Nog één keer weerklinkt het ‘IJsseldalthema’ in mineur totdat in eenstralende finale alle thema’s samenkomen. Indrukwekkend!

Diese filmmusikähnliche Komposition erzählt die Geschichte des angelsächsischen Mönchs Lebu nus, der um das Jahr 768 im Zuge der Missionierung der heidnischen Sachsen eine Kirche im niederländischen Deventer errichtete. Aufeinander folgende, kontrastive Themen beschreiben das Ijssel-Tal, die Sachsen und Lebu nus, den Kirchenbau und die Zerstörung im Kampf gegen die Sachsen. Es erklingt noch einmal das Ijssel-Tal-Thema in Moll, bevor im schillernden Finale alle Themen zusammenkommen.

Plusieurs lignes musicales se confondent dans cette composition, évoquant tour tour la vallée de l’Ijssel, la ville néerlandaise de Daventria (mot latin de Daventer) ainsi que la vie du moine anglosaxon Lebu nus, qui en 768, décida de construire une église pour les saxons restés pa ens. Le dernier tableau réunit les différents thèmes, nous révélant que la cohabitation est parfois laborieuse mais toujours enrichissante. Un finale pétillant haut en couleurs.

Questa composizione, scritta nello stile della musica da film, racconta la storia del monaco Lebu nus che nell’anno 768 quando era incaricato di convertire al cristianesimo i sassoni restati pagani, si occupò anche della costruzione di una chiesa a Daventer (Paesi Bassi). Temi contrastanti che si susseguono descrivono la valle di Iissel, i sassoni e il monaco Lebu nus. Il compositore traduce in musica la costruzione della chiesa e la sua completa distruzione ad opera dei sassoni nel corso di una battaglia. Il motivo della valle di Ijssel è ripreso ancora in una tonalit minore, prima che tutti i temi accompagnino il brano al suo scintillante finale.

Johann Adolf Hasse, Kapellmeister at the Saxon-Polish court in Dresden, composed the Requiem in C major for the ceremonial exequies of the deceased Elector Friedrich August II in November 1763 in the Catholic Hofkirche in Dresden. With this work he composed a monument in music to his long-standing, generous employer, who was also King of Poland under the name August III: passionate choral movements, echoes of historic compositional styles, expressive vocal solos and arias which undeniably reveal Hasse the opera composer, and trumpets and timpani in the orchestra - all these are the ingredients of a royal Requiem Mass in the style of a Missa solemnis.Hasse's much smaller-scale Requiem in B flat, which we are now publishing for the first time, was presumably composed as early as the second half of the 1750s. Nothing is known about the occasion for which this beautiful work was composed, or even whether it was performed during the composer's lifetime. Perhaps the Seven Years War, in which the electorate of Saxony was involved, prevented any performance. Several borrowings from it in his Requiem in C and in the later Requiem in E flat show that Hasse held the work in high regard.The Hasse Works Edition (HWA) is published in collaboration with the Hasse-Gesellschaft Bergedorf e. V. and is intended to serve both scholarship and the needs of performing musicians with scholarly-critical editions of Hasse's music.
