Childrenâ??s Oak was commissioned by the wind band from Beauquesne, France. This solemn work pays homage to a city particularly affected by the two World Wars and is inspired by the knowledge that the city of Beauquesne needed to recover from these terrible episodes in its history. The title has its origin in the roots of the word â??Beauquesneâ?, the beautiful oak tree. It is a beautiful slow piece for your concert, or as a resource to work on phrasing and intonation, or alternatively as a warm up piece.

Childrenâ??s Oak is geschreven in opdracht van het blaasorkest van het Franse Beauquesne. Dit plechtige werk is een eerbetoon aan een plaats die in de beide wereldoorlogen zwaar is getroffen. Het is ge nspireerd op de gedachte dat de gemeente Beauquesne zich moest herstellen na deze verschrikkelijke periodes uit haar geschiedenis. Geprägt von der Hoffnung, die die Stadt Beauquesne brauchte, um sich von den schrecklichen Ereignissen seiner Geschichte zu erholen handelt es sich um ein wunderschönes langsames Stück, das nicht nur für Konzerte geeignet ist, sondern auch um Intonation und Phrasierungen zu üben oder aber auch als Aufwärmstück.

De Kameleon is een boomhagedis. Hij heeft een uitschietende tong waarmee insecten worden gevangen en vreemde ogen die onafhankelijk van elkaar kunnen bewegen. Zijn bekendste eigenschap is echter het vermogen om van kleur te veranderenen zich op deze manier perfect aan te passen aan zijn omgeving. In de compositie ‘Kameleon’ is de verandering van kleur een belangrijk onderwerp. Ieder afzonderlijk instrument heeft zijn eigen, typische klankkleur. Door verschillendeinstrumenten met elkaar te combineren krijgt men ‘nieuwe’ klankkleuren. Daarnaast is het gebruik van dempers een middel om kleurverandering te bewerkstelligen. Ook het combineren van twee verschillende toonsoorten (bi-tonaliteit)is een vorm van kleuren. De keuze van de toonsoorten en de manier waarin men deze tegen elkaar zet kan in kleur variëren van zacht tot zeer fel. ‘Kameleon’ is voor het grootste gedeelte gebaseerd op twee korte motievendie in de opening van het werk gepresenteerd worden en daarna steeds in hoedanigheid veranderen. Het eerste is een verminderde kwint, het interval dat bekend staat als de ‘tritonis’. Door de gehele compositie heen heeft heteen signaalfunctie. Het tweede is een 4-tonig motief dat zich voornamelijk in het lage register bevindt en zich voortdurend ontwikkelt. In het snelle deel zit de enige echte melodie. Speels en lichtvoetig van karakter is het contrasterendmet de sfeer in het langzame gedeelte. ‘Kameleon’ is geschreven in opdracht van Unisono (voorheen Stichting NIB). Verplicht werk minirepertorium 4e divisie fanfare.
