Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.312418790). ISBN 9781491138144. UPC: 680160640218. Second April, by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Second April for S.A.T.B. Chorus and Piano is a four-movement set, based on the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. Ewazen has long been enamored with her poetry's wonderfully vivid and descriptive imagery of nature and emotions, and its powerful and profound meaning. The third movement, ALMS is a fast rondo, intense, bold, and always dance-like. It is about both tragedy and resilience. This music is primarily minor, yet with moments of playfulness, the recollection of happy times takes over. This seesaw between emotions is heard throughout the movement, and with Millay’s summing up of “reality being what it is,” the piece ends with strength, boldness, and finality. . Program Notes by Eric EwazenSECOND APRIL for S.A.T.B. Chorus and Piano is a four-movement set, based on the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. I have long been enamored with the poetry of Millay for its wonderfully vivid and descriptive imagery, and its often powerful and profound meaning. Millay’s descriptions of nature, and of feelings and emotions, have always spoken to me. SECOND APRIL consists of four of her poems, each with a distinctive mood, message, and emotional feel. They are vivid, powerful, and beautiful, inspiring me to capture these descriptions of the various scenes she portrays. Song of a Second April uses music to underlie strong feelings, passions, and the tragedies of life. The poem itself is dramatic, detailing a time of personal strife and tragedy, perhaps the end of a relationship or even the end of a life. The music is intense, fast, in a minor key, and with rapid, spinning notes creating a feeling of powerful, relentless emotions. Melodies, motives, and gestures are tossed between the voices, increasing the feelings of intensity and even desperation. Little by little, the music almost dies away, getting quieter and quieter, creating a feeling of resignation, but with a Picardy Third in the final chord – maybe a bit of hope! Mariposa is a celebration of nature, wandering through a field with white and blue butterflies appearing almost wondrously. But there’s also a profound feeling of poignancy, noting that as one relishes such a beautiful, magical sight, they should embrace the experience – the fleeting, transient nature of such a perfect vision and of life itself. The music portrays the flying of the butterflies: gentle, beautiful, with rich chords and arpeggios, but stepping back, as the fleeting nature of life is the reality, with gentle, but sombre chords interspersed with the magical flight of the Mariposa.Alms is a fast rondo, intense, bold, and always dance-like. It is about both tragedy and resilience. This music is also in minor, yet with moments of playfulness, as a recollection of happy times or moments takes over. This seesaw between emotions is heard throughout the movement, as the music continues to “dance.” And with Millay’s summing up of “reality being what it is,” the piece ends with strength, boldness, and finality. Into the Golden Vessel of Great Song is an appassionato call to overcome! The poem exhorts us to “sing out” with hope, determination, and strength. The music is full of bright and lilting energy; but as the turmoil and times of strife people can sometimes feel or experience, the music becomes intense, dramatic, in a minor key, and with changing rhythms. BUT, there is a return to championing the idea of simply overcoming, going forward with hope and determination, and the music is in major, resonant and strong. . $4.25 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Orchestra String Orchestra - Medium Easy/Medium SKU: CF.CAS22 Composed by Larry Clark. Carl Fischer Concert String Orchestra Series. Score and Parts. With Standard notation. 12 pages. Carl Fischer Music #CAS22. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.CAS22). ISBN 9780825858208. UPC: 798408058203. 8.5 X 11 inches. Key: G major. The fast paced rondo has a Dorian flavored melody with hints of quartel (based on an interval of a fourth) harmony to give it a contemporary sound The players are presented with solo opportunities as well as harmonic turns and twists that will keep them. Rondo in the Nick of Time was originally the third movement for a woodwind quintet piece that I wrote in 1990. I have always been fond of this little piece and felt that it would adapt well to larger ensembles. I have also scored this piece for band as part of a suite called Upon a New Horizon. The main theme is based on the Dorian Mode. The use of quartal harmony makes up most of the harmonic material. Each statement of the theme is followed by an episode that increases in length each time. There is a sudden change of style and tempo in the middle of the piece, where fragments of the theme are developed. The title is a play-on-words, since the work contains hemiola effects that alter the feel of the time.As with all of my pieces for strings, the bowings are given only as a reference. Feel free to alter them to fit the needs of your students. I have indicated a rather fast tempo for the piece. I really like the piece to fly, but it will work and sound fine at a slower tempo as well. Just endeavor to keep their energy moving forward. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope that you and your students enjoy it and find it useful in your program.-Larry ClarkLakeland, FL. 2005. About Carl Fischer Concert String Orchestra Series This series of pieces (Grade 3 and higher) is designed for advancing ensembles. The pieces in this series are characterized by: - Expanded use of rhythms, ranges and keys but technical demands are still carefully considered

Trombone and Piano - Advanced SKU: CY.CC3136 Composed by John W. Ware. Cl...(+)
Trombone and Piano - Advanced SKU: CY.CC3136 Composed by John W. Ware. Classical. Score and Parts. Cherry Classics #CC3136. Published by Cherry Classics (CY.CC3136). ISBN 9790530111055. 8.5 x 11 in inches. This fine work has sat dormant for many years and has now come to light thanks to the efforts of Charlie Vernon, Bass Trombonist of the Chicago Symphony, who performed this virtuoso work as a young performer. The concerto is in the standard three movement form: Fast, slow, fast. This publication is a reduction from the original orchestral version (to be released at some point in the future). Here is a description of the Concerto by the composer, John W. Ware. I started on the trombone concerto in my junior year studying composition at Indiana University. While working on it, I learned of an opportunity to make it sort of a thesis piece (though students didn't write a thesis in composition while an undergrad). The original version was for trombone with string orchestra, and it was performed by the IU String Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Arthur Corra, with Robert Priez, trombone, as part of my senior composition recital. I thought the performance was quite good (Priez played extraordinarily well), and the piece received a newspaper review in the Indiana Daily Student, in which the reviewer wrote that the work was almost too exciting. I thought at the time that he had given me and my music a fine compliment. I made a piano version of the accompaniment, shortening and tightening the first movement, for performances in 1966; I made a second revision in 1967 for a performance by E. J. Eaton, trombonist at the University of Tennessee at Martin, arriving at the form in which the work exists now. The first movement is in fairly normal sonata-allegro form, in the key of A minor. It alternates between assertive and more thoughtful moods. There is no introduction; the soloist enters immediately and dominates much of the movement. The main theme is--by some manipulation--a source for most of the other themes, and all of the themes are used in close proximity to each other, including contrapuntal combinations, especially near the end. Originally the movement included a lengthy fugato, now much shortened and including a stretto that builds and subsides before a cadenza leading to a coda based on both the principal and secondary themes. Key relations in this movement, as in the other two, are quite free and often chromatic, with frequent third-relations; but returns to the tonic at the end are emphatic. The writing is challenging for both soloist and accompanist; the piece is substantial, requiring technique and stamina. The second movement is in F minor and is also built on both contrast and close relationships between the main and secondary themes. The main theme is heard in the piano part before the soloist enters. The mood is more lyric than in the first movement, but with dramatic episodes also. In this movement are some definite derivations from themes in the first movement. The ending is a sort of lengthened shadow of the opening. The finale returns to A minor, with themes slightly related to polonaise rhythms, but with strong echoes of first-movement themes. Here, too, dramatic and lyric episodes alternate, with dotted rhythms frequently propelling the music forward. The introduction is a brief and simple preparation for the solo entry. Later in the movement, a very brief, slightly slower section is soon overtaken by the original tempo. Toward the end, there is a second cadenza, again leading to a swift and energetic coda. The work is about 20 minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced performers. $40.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Named for the West Wind, this Grade 3 original work makes use of quarter and eighth note triplets to depict a sense of swirling motion. A forward- moving theme is passed between sections in the orchestra accompanied by a steady, march-like staccato pulse. The opening B minor theme rises and falls, giving way to a faster, rhythmic section in D major. Ascending and descending scale passages are exchanged between voices with a light, springy spiccato. The music swells with crescendos and decrescendos portraying the sweeping ebb and flow of the wind. The primary minor theme returns with a dramatic unison statement in the violins, shifting modally as it builds to a momentous finale. Expressive playing, some simple counterpoint, and a touch of pizzicato characterize this contemporary sounding but accessible piece in two contrasting sections, slow and lively. Duration: 3'15. The definition of Air is a tune or melody, but often it is used to describe a piece that is lyrical in nature, as in the first section of this piece. The next section of the piece is called Caprice, which is the French word for capriccio. The term capriccio has been used as the title for a variety of different types of works throughout music history. It is used here in its literal definition which describes the fanciful, capricious nature of the second section of the piece. As part of the development of the piece, the minor material from the Air is used as bridge material in the Caprice section. The Air and Caprice should be very contrasting in style. Play the Air very sustained and chorale-like and the Caprice, light with forward motion. The tempo of the Caprice should not be too fast; however, the tempo can be adjusted down to accommodate the ability level of your ensemble. Bowings have not been over-marked, and no slurs are used; feel free to alter it if necessary. It has been my pleasure to have had the opportunity to write this piece. I hope that you and your students find it useful for your program. $53.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

| String Quartet String Quartet: 2 violins, viola, cello [Score] Theodore Presser Co.
Chamber Music String Quartet SKU: PR.11440902S Composed by Behzad Ranjbar...(+)
Chamber Music String Quartet SKU: PR.11440902S Composed by Behzad Ranjbaran. Full score. With Standard notation. Composed 1990. 44 pages. Duration 22 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #114-40902S. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.11440902S). UPC: 680160013708. The quartet begins with a 5-note motif, played in unison that permeates melodically and harmonically throughout the movement. The energetic and hard-driven character of the second musical idea propels the music forward with fast moving notes and greater urgency. It often alternates with the more lyrical rendition of the 5-note motif, yielding contrasting sections. After a brief coda, the 5-note motif concludes the movement much the same way it had begun but with greater intensity. The second movement explores the world of fantasy. To some extent the beginning and the ending of the movement function as the opening and closing doors that separate the reality from the dream and subconscious. It is one continuous movement in an arch form that gradually accelerates to an expansive emotional climax and returning steadily to the surface led by an ethereal solo cello. The transcendent ending is similar to the beginning, though half step higher. The third movement begins boldly with the 5-note motif transformed into a dance character in a compound meter. The asymmetrical meter of the Persian folk music influences much of the rhythmic character of the movement. The return of many materials from earlier movements interwoven into the fabric of this movement reinforces the cyclical and organic character of the quarter. Particularly, a mysterious passage, reminiscence of the second movement leading to a brief full-blown ballad is a favorite moment of Ranjbaran's in the quartet. A blazingly virtuosic viola leads the quartet to an uplifting conclusion. $34.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Subito Music Corporation #91480570. Published by Subito Music Corporation (SU.91480570). Text: Angier Brock. SATB Chorus, Organ Duration: 7' Text: Angier Brock Composed: 2010 Published by: Subito Music Publishing YouTube: Ms. Brock’s moving poem is lyrical throughout. Even in its beautiful originality, the poem invokes The Book of Common Prayer and biblical scripture (the latter through references to dust and breath from Genesis 2 to the final line of the poem invoking the opening of Psalm 62). Ms. Brock’s poetry is also filled with wonderful twists on traditional texts (such as in the creative and reverse naming of the Trinity in speaking of Inventing Wind, Generous Christ, and Luminous God). Musically, the main melodic material of the piece is immediately heard on a solo organ color accompanied by organ strings over a recurring pedal pulse on the pitch C. The chorus soon enters with the first stanza of the text. As this stanza unfolds, the harmony starts to gradually change as the pulsing pedal rhythm begins to move upward by step. An organ interlude, reflective of the opening introduction, soon emerges (though now over a C-sharp recurring pedal pulse), and leads to a similar choral setting as found in stanza one. As the poem’s second stanza moves forward, it eventually folds into the more harmonically rich stanza three. A fast, dance-like section evolves at Inventing Wind, what a lively dance your energy creates! eventually bringing the work to its climax point. The spirit of dance soon subsides and leads to a quiet and gentle close on the words …for you alone my soul in silence waits.

Make sure not to lose the poignancy by playing the piece too fast or too slow. Let the music have control. $45.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Opening quietly, the introduction gradually builds in volume and energy up to a tempo change where the piece takes off and doesn't relent until the end. Combining rhythms of 3 over a pulse of 2 creates a hemiola effect that drives the piece forward, creating a feeling of anxiety and being chased. This is a bombastic, action-packed piece with loud percussive hits, huge brass, and soaring woodwinds that ends with a bang.
