This volume contains three reworkings and orchestrations of religious works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy which were originally set for smaller ensembles (solo voices, four-part chorus and organ). They were composed at different times and for different occasions, two of them as commissions. The anthem ,,Why, o Lord, delay forever MWV A 19 was originally the sacred vocal piece MWV B 33, published in England in 1841 with the additional title ,,[…] The Thirteenth Psalm, and in Germany in the same year as ,,Lass, o Herr, mich Hilfe finden with the title ,,Drei geistliche Lieder which was composed at the suggestion of the English literature and music lover Charles B. Broadley who also provided the paraphrase of the psalm text. After Mendelssohn had refused an initial request by Broadley to furnish the anthem post festum with an organ prelude, the composer did not want to turn down a second request to orchestrate the work and he even expanded the existing material with a lengthy closing fugue involving additional trumpets and timpani. The ,,Ave Maria MWV B 19 was written in connection with Mendelssohn's appointment as municipal music director, a position which at the same time included the responsibility for the musical organization of church services. The instrumentation of the work with an accompaniment of two clarinets and two bassoons as well as low strings was due to the fact that the organ in Dusseldorf's principal church St. Lambertus was out of order for an extended period of time, and Mendelssohn considered this solution explicitly only as a surrogate for the organ should there be none. A further psalm paraphrase in English, this time by William Bartholomew, of the hymn ,,Hear my prayer MWV B 49 was set to music in early 1844; the orchestration of the organ part commissioned by the distinguished Dublin musician Joseph Robinson was not completed until 1847 so that the premiere finally only took place after Mendelssohn's death. In the further course of the century ,,Hear my prayer would, particularly in the version with organ accompaniment, come to enjoy great popularity in Great Britain and Ireland.

Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen 3 EPIGRAMS'3 Epigrams' (1963) came into existence following my piece for chamber orchestra 'Chronos' (1962). My purpose with these pieces (and others of the same period) was to explore the sound experiences of serialism in space and time but without using the original and fundamental substance of serialism - the tone row. The chromatic space was constituted by four identical and complementary tone columns (established by transposition). The time was divided into 25 different sizes, plasticly conceived and graphically notated. These distances were then divided in 25 new distances in the same proportions etc ... into smaller and smaller durations completely hierarchally carried through. This time division, 'rhythm', de-termines the gradual or sudden shifts from one tone column to another. The 3 Epigrams became a little play of my own with this material and the work is, therefore, quite clear to read and easy to play - a kind of bagatelle, really.I am now afraid that a classic situation is emerging: If this programme note is any longer it will take more time to read this than it will take to play the three pieces.Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen.

The Mozart expert Henrik Wiese edits the central work genre of Viennese classicism according to the current status of international Mozart research. The clean autograph of the Horn Concerto in Eb major K. 447 offers a reliable basis for the present Urtext edition, which deliberately abstains from leveling out certain fine points and smaller divergences made by Mozart at parallel and repeated passages. In the edition for horn and piano, the two solo parts contain two cadenza suggestions for the first movement, as well as lead-ins (also alternative) for measures 22 and 196 in the third movement. The distinguished Mozart specialist Robert D. Levin offers a variety of multiply interrelated motivic and melodic sections from which every horn player can put together his own cadenza.

Johannes Brahms was long reluctant to compete with Beethoven in the field of symphonic music. With his D-major Serenade in six movements, the young composer deliberately chose a genre that had had its golden era in the 18th century, thus before Beethoven. Initially, he even conceived the Serenade for a smaller setting, but decided on a full orchestra in 1860. But even then, it was slow in becoming an audience success. The new Brahms Complete Edition has chosen as its principal source a copy of the scores first edition that Brahms used as his personal work copy. There, however, errors remained undiscovered, and recurred in later print runs as well. It was not until the new Brahms Edition that a music text of the D-major Serenade is finally being published, a text that clearly heeds all of the composers emendations and eliminates other shortcomings.

'Dramaphonia' for piano solo and 11 instruments forms the first part of a trilogy of solo-concertos, the remaining two being one for percussion and smaller symphony orchestra ('Monodrama') and the last ('Polydrama') for violoncello and full orchestra. All three pieces are in one movement each and may be performed together, thus presenting a vast concerto grosso of the duration of one hour and a half. Each concerto, however, stands by itself, offering its own story: having employed the word drama in all three pieces, I naturally want to imply that something is going on, a series of hidden events created by each listener's own inner theatre which enables him to stage his own, personal associations, and in the case of 'Dramaphonia', the compositorical tension alters between action and frozen panoramas. In the percussion concerto, the rhythmical progression is being constantly intensified, whereas the metric proportions of Dramaphonia tighten and loosen, like a magnifying glass being wielded in and out of focus. 'Dramaphonia' is commissioned and dedicated to LONTANO and Poul Rosenbaum.

A psalm concerto by Heinrich Schutz for solo voices, choir, 2 violins, 3 trombones, and basso continuo which is too little known. It can also alternatively be performed by smaller forces. Schutz probably wrote the concerto for a major political occasion in connection with the Thirty Years' War. He hauntingly set the plea for God's help and peace throughout the land, sometimes in unison or for duet with echo passages, sometimes for tutti, but always in harmonically exciting fashion leading to the vision that finally justice and peace kiss. An exciting work for concerts on the theme of psalms and peace.

Handel composed the “Te Deum†in B-flat major HWV 281 in 1718 for the future Duke of Chandos, hence its nickname “Chandos Te Deumâ€. Here it is called “Te Deum for Cannons†after the Duke’s stately home named Cannons where the first performance took place. The unusual scoring for flute, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, two violins and basso continuo plus a choir (one soprano, three tenors and a bass) probably reflects the musicians which were available at Cannons, bearing in mind that three tenors were used also in “Acis and Galateaâ€, the masque which was composed at almost the same time. Though in many respects this “Te Deum†is reminiscent of the “Utrecht Te Deumâ€, its smaller forces tend to give it more the character of chamber music. This edition is based on the Urtext from the “Halle Handel Edition†(BA 10708-01), which offers the first complete scholarly text of the music for the “Te Deumâ€.

Cesar Franck's great orchestral Mass in A major of 1861 is one of the works which the composer wrote for liturgical use at St. Clotilde in Paris, the church where he played for many years as a famous organist and organ improviser. Probably because of concerns on the part of his publisher, a few years after Franck composed his orchestral Mass he reworked it for much smaller forces: instead of orchestra, just organ, harp, cello, and double bass are required. It was this version of the work was first published in 1872 in Paris. As well as the orchestral version (40.646/00), Carus-Verlag also publishes this much reduced version - both in the original, now rather unusual, choral scoring for soprano, tenor, and bass (40.646/50), and in a four-part scoring adapted for modern-day choirs (40.646/60).Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4064600.

Triode Variations by Ming Tsao is a 29-minute work for 21-part ensemble. The scientific area of electronic triodes has informed this composition. Sudden changes in tension are applied to the smallest fragments, meter and tempo are altered constantly, resulting in a highly complex and exciting work.
The premiere took place on 28 May 2022 at the WDR Funkhaus in Cologne, with Ensemble Musikfabrik conducted by Emilio Pomarico.
