Bagpipers is the first movement of the three-movement Sonatina composed in 1915 (1. Bagpipers, 2.Bear Dance and 3. Finale). The composer said of the piece, ''Originally I planned a group of Romanianfolk dances for piano. I selected three parts of this and called it Sonatina. The first movement, Bagpipers[...] consists of two dances played by two bagpipers.'' The piece is based on a couple dance fromTransylvania, the ardeleana (also known as the kanászos), while the middle section was inspired bythe bagpipe playing of a middle-aged man recorded by Bartók in Váncsfalva (now Oncesti) of Bihar County during February 1910. In 1931, Bartók arranged it for symphony orchestraunder the title Dances from Transylvania. This arrangement for oboe and piano was made by Liszt Prize-winningoboist Tibor Szeszler (1919 1992).

The Concertino IV for oboe and string orchestra was composed in 1982-83 and dedicated to the renowned Swiss oboist Jean-Paul Goy. Its three short movements, following the traditional tempo order, mirror Farkas's attraction to Classical order and harmony. The musical language is modern and personal, however, and allows the soloist to exhibit his virtuosity.

The source of the present edition of the Oboe Concerto in A minor by Antonio Vivaldi is the Collected Works of Vivaldi, edited by Malipiero, published by Ricordi 1955. The title of the original score is Concerto in La minore per oboe, archi e cembalo the original setting: Oboe, Violini I-II, Viole, Violoncelli, Contrabassi and Cembalo. The arrangement for oboe and piano is kept in accurate conformity with the musical text of score, the continuo part - however - has been more freely adapted (of course within the possibilities of baroque style). The piano part contains the entire orchestral material in the Tutti-s, thus the soloist is not obliged to play all the Tutti parts.However, in Movement I and III the first and last Tutti may never be omitted by the performer. Die Grundlage dieser Ausgabe des Oboenkonzertes in A-Moll von Antonio Vivaldi ist die von Malipiero redigierte Gesamtausgabe (Ricordi, 1955). Der Titel der Originalpartitur lautet: Concerto in La minore per oboe, archi e cembalo: die Besetzung ist folgende: Oboe, Violini I-II, Viole, Violoncelli, Contrabassi, Cembalo. Die Ausgabe für Oboe und Klavier ist dem Urtext der Partitur getreu, doch ist die Ausarbeitung des Continuos etwas freier behandelt (natürlich nur im Rahmen der vom Stil der Barockmusik gebotenen Möglichkeit). An ABRSM syllabus title 2014-21, Grade 6.From 1906 on Béla Bartók was collecting folksongs on a regular basis. It was in 1907, during his first collecting trip to Transylvania, that he jotted down those three melodies in Gyergyóteker patak, Cs k, which he both provided with piano accompaniment (From Gyergyó) and arranged for solo piano (Three Hungarian Folksongs from Cs k) in the same year. The melodies were played by a ''sixty-year old man'' on a peasant flute. In 2015 we are launching a series entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further,new transcriptions that fulfill in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.

Signs, Games and Messages are series for solo instruments and small chamber ensembles. Each of the three notions refers to an essential factor in Kurtág’s music. Signs ties it with the composer's period of study in Paris as a young man, when he could not compose, merely put graphic signs on the paper. Games links with his nine-volume series for the piano with that title. Messages conveys the very personal content of these works, in that these short pieces are meant to be diary-entries and missives to musiciansand friends important to Kurtág. The collection – like the earlier five series for string instruments – does not form a coherent cycle. The pieces can be played individually or in various orders or mixed with from Signs, Games and Messages written for other instruments.

'Joseph Sellner (1787-1843) was a famous oboe player of his time. In 1825, Sellner published an oboe tutor in three volumes entitled Theoretisch-Praktische Oboen-Schule. Despite the fact that the instrument has undergone considerable changes and improvements since his time, the majority of Sellner's work has still retained its usefulness to this day. His studies provide valuable help for achieving smooth technique and tone-colour, especially at the beginner level. The obsolete two-part exercises and interval studies written for the instrument of his time have been omitted in this volume. The studies have been arranged here, as opposed to the original sequence, accordingto the order of key signatures.' - Péter Pongrácz Joseph Sellner (1787-1843) war ein berühmter Oboist seiner Zeit und Autor der Theoretisch-Praktischen Oboen-Schule. An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as no. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It has become one of Bartók's favorite works, which the composer himself was fond of playing at recitals. As he explained in an American interview, it was ''an original composition that is ... with themes of my own invention but ... the themes are in the style of the Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. There are two themes. The first one is a parlando-rubato-rhythm and the second one is more in a dance-like rhythm. The second one is more or less the imitation of a peasant flute playing.'' Bartók also orchestrated the piece in 1931 as no. 1 of Hungarian Sketches. In einem amerikanischen Interview äußerte er sich dazu, ''… es handelt sich um eine Originalkomposition, das heißt, ihre Themen stammen von mir, wobei diese Themen jedoch den Stil der siebenbürgisch-ungarischen Volkslieder aufgreifen. Von seinen zwei Themen hat das erste Parlando-Rubato-Charakter, das zweite ist eher von einem Tanzrhythmus geprägt … und ist mehr oder weniger die Imitation eines bäuerlichen Blockflötenspiels.'' Max Reger's well-known Romance in G major WoO II/10 was written as a supplement for the Neue Musik-Zeitung, which was the recipient of works - particularly songs and piano pieces - by Reger in the years 1900 and 1901. Reger himself designated his Romance shortly after its publication as an occasional piece of the worst kind - for me!
