Debussy's General Lavine - eccentric, is taken from his Book II of Piano Preludes written in 1912. It is in the style of a Cakewalk, a dance developed in the late 19th century at get-togethers on slave plantations in the southern United States. The music is based on Edward Lavine, a famous vaudeville performer whose act was presented at the Marigny Theatre around the same time. It is the only work by Debussy composed as a musical portrait for a human personality.The music of about 3 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

Impromptu is a piano work which Dvorak wrote in 1883 at the behest his friend Vaclav Juda Novotny to be inserted as a supplement into his music magazine. It has an A-B-A form containing some very beautiful melodies and much expression. The piece was forgotten and considered lost but then showed up decades later in a private collection.The music is about 6 minutes in duration and is appropriate for advanced performers.

Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel wrote over 460 works, mostly for solo piano and voice (lieder). She set over 34 songs to poems by Goethe, who was her favorite poet. Her songs are very expressive and are in a similar style as Schubert. The Goethe Lieder is a collection of four songs and is just right for a young performer at the intermediate level, however even a mature artist will enjoy the beautiful music of this talented composer.

Gliere's Two Pieces, Op. 9 is an early work, originally written for double bass with the two movements having been beautifully arranged for Euphonium and Piano by Ralph Sauer.The Intermezzo is lyrical, sensual and Eastern sounding.The Tarantella is a sprightly folk dance of southern Italy. The curious name comes from the wolf spider or Tarantula whose bite is highly poisonous and in earlier times was believed to cause the victims to engage in a frenzied dance. Ralph Sauer has arranged two lovely and contrasting short works by Germaine Tailleferre for Euphonium and Piano. Tailleferre was the only female composer of the famous French Les Six.1. Berceuse, originally for Violin and Piano lilts and floats in a calm and lyrical stream of dreamy phrases. 2. Pastorale originally for solo Piano is a playful movement in mixed meter alternating between legato and articulated phrases.Together they are total about 5 minutes in length and are appropriate for advanced performers.

Scenes From Childhood (Kinderscenen), Opus 15 is a set of 13 pieces of music that Schumann wrote for Piano in 1838. They are his reminiscences of childhood and have been beautifully scored for Euphonium & Piano by Ralph Sauer. The most well known of the movements is Tråumerei (Dreaming) and has been used in movies to portray love scenes because of its tenderness and beauty.The music is appropriate for advanced performers and the collection contains close to 20 minutes of some very sublime and poetic music. The Serenade, Op. 37 was conceived for Cello with Piano accompaniment, but later in life the composer scored the work for the solo instrument with orchestra. The Low Brass world knows Rimsky-Korsakov for his Trombone Concerto for Band. The Serenade has a very similar mood to the slow movement of the Concerto. It's beautiful lilting rhythm combined with a wonderful melody makes this work very worthwhile.Mr. Sauer's arrangement brings a beautiful feel to this 4 minute work, which is appropriate for advanced performers.Parts for Bass and Treble readers are supplied.

Le Rossignol or the Nightingale is originally a vocalise for Soprano solo from Saint-Saen's incidental orchestral music for the play, Parysatis written in 1902. This 4 minute work is all about mood. For this arrangement, Mr. Sauer transposes into the key of C, which lays perfectly for all of the bird-like calls that are in phrases which are slurred. The music has a lot of ad lib. tempo sections which gives the performer plenty of time to create that magic call of the Nightingale. Early writers thought it was the female that sang, but in fact it is the male. The Nightingale usually sings at night or just before dawn when other birds are silent and has a strong spontaneous song with an impressive range of trills and whistles.

Paul Marie Theodore Vincent d'Indy was born in Paris into an aristocratic family of royalist and Catholic persuasion. He had piano lessons from an early age from his paternal grandmother, who passed him on to Antoine François Marmontel and Louis Diemer. His main influence was Cesar Franck. These three pieces were some of his many works for Piano. Opus 33 was inspired by a trip to Bayreuth, the musical home of Wagner and the Black Forest region. Opus 33 no. 1 from 1889 is titled ? with no explanation of itself. Opus 33 no. 10 is titled Lermoos, which is a delightful skiing village in Austria right on the border with Germany. Germany's largest mountain is in perfect view, possibly giving the movement its spirit. Opus 28 is a Serenade for Violin and Piano published in 1900. It is lithe, subtle and lyrical.

This wonderful unaccompanied work by Johann Sebastian Bach was, in all likelihood, written for the transverse flute, though that is by no means certain. In fact, there is an earlier version of the Allemande for a keyboard or stringed instrument.The Partita, originally in the key of A minor has been transposed down into D minor, putting it into a perfect range. The work is in four movements:Allemande, Corrente, Sarabande and Bourree Anglaise and is appropriate for advanced performers.
