Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to “Nulli Secundus”, the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp’s own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair!

De titel Second to None past heel goed bij dit werk, maar verwijst eigenlijk naar ‘Nulli Secundus’, het motto van British Army Corps of Music, het orkest dat Philip Sparke de opdracht voor dit werk gaf. Second to None opent met een fanfare. Daarna volgen twee korte citaten uit twee van de eigen marsen van het orkest en een feestelijke Vivace. Een meer legato deel creëert een mooi contrast voordat het werk wordt afgesloten met de openingsfanfare. Van begin tot einde prachtig!

Das feierliche Werk honoriert die musikalische Tradition des Corps, indem es auf einige seiner eigenen berühmten Märsche, wie beispielsweise The Corps of Army Music Slow March (Greg Machin) und The Music Makers (Ian Mitchell), anspielt. Second to None kann auch in einer kürzeren Fassung gespielt werden und ist ein ideales Eröffnungsstück für jedes festliche Konzert.

Second to None est un titre qui convient parfaitement ce morceau, même s’il fait en fait référence « Nulli Secundus », la devise du British Corps of Army Music, l'orchestre qui a fait la commande auprès de Philip Sparke. La pièce commence par une fanfare, suivie de deux citations courtes de deux de leurs propres marches, et un Vivace festif. Une section plus legato crée un beau contraste avant la fin où la fanfare du début est répétée. Parfait !

Second to None was composed for the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the British Army Corps. Paying tribute to the musical tradition of the Corps, this celebratory work refers to some of its own famous marches like The Corps of ArmyMusic Slow March (Greg Machin) and The Music Makers (Ian Mitchell). Alan Turing is considered the father of modern computational science and much, if not all, of our modern computer technology and the connectivity that we now take for granted is born of the work of this one great, but troubled man. His famous test was designed to prove whether artificial intelligence (AI) could successfully imitate human thought. The single movement of The Turing Test is essentially non-programmatic, but it does seek to show something of the emotion and colour of Turing’s life in its different sections. The composer employs bi-tonality and complex rhythms to show opposing worlds colliding. At the end of each test, we must decide: has true AI beenborn?

Alan Turing wordt beschouwd als de vader van de moderne computerwetenschap. Veel, zo niet alle, moderne computertechnologie en connectiviteit die we nu vanzelfsprekend vinden, vloeien voort uit het werk van deze ene geweldige maar getroebleerde man. The Turing Test is in wezen een niet-programmatische compositie aan één stuk, maar in de verschillende gedeelten komt wel iets van de emotie en kleuren van Turings leven terug. De componist heeft geprobeerd bitonaliteit en complexe ritmes te gebruiken om naast elkaar bestaande werelden te laten botsen. Aan het slot van elke test moeten we ons afvragen: is hier sprake van ware kunstmatige intelligentie?

Der Komponist hat versucht, Bitonalität und komplexe Rhythmen zu verwenden, um das Aufeinanderprallen der verschiedenen Welten darzustellen. Am Ende jedes Tests müssen wir entscheiden, ob wahre künstlicheIntelligenz geboren wurde.

If you need a beautiful slow interlude for any concert then this is the piece for you. This short work by Italian composer Thomaso Albinoni has a luscious melody that will bring tears to any eyes. For hundreds of years the manuscript of this work had been lost and was only discovered in 1945. Despite this it has become Albinoni’s best known work and has topped the classical charts on many occasions. Wonderful figures for the flugel and soprano cornet bring out extra emotion in this arrangement by Jacob de Haan.

Das Adagio, so wie es heute weithin bekannt ist, hat eine interessante Geschichte: Es wurde erst im 20. Jahrhundert von einem Musikwissenschaftler aus einem Manuskript Albinonis, welches lediglich Teile einer Melodie enthielt, rekonstruiert. Dennoch ist es gerade das Adagio, das Albinoni in der heutigen Musikwelt berühmt gemacht hat und dessen Wirkung sich auch in diesem gefühlvollen Arrangement von Jacob de Haan niemand entziehen kann.

Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) est né Venise. Il est le fils aîné d’un riche marchand. Dès son plus jeune ge, il développe un réel talent pour le chant et surtout pour le violon, et se met rapidement composer. Albinoni a vécu et travaillé toute sa vie durant Venise, mais a également séjourné Florence et Munich.Dans sa jeunesse, Albinoni compose de la musique sacrée mais sans grand succès. En 1694, il attire l’attention du public vénitien lors de la représentation de son premier opéra Zenobia, Regina de Palmireni (Zenobia, reine de Palmireni). Ses premières œuvres de musique instrumentale datent de la même année. Par la suite, Albinoni se consacre surtout lacomposition d’œuvres vocales (opéras et cantates) et instrumentales (sonates et concertos).C’est en travaillant sur la biographie d’Albinoni, au sortir de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, que le musicologue milanais, Remo Giazotto, découvre la Bibliothèque Nationale de Dresde, un manuscrit inédit, sur lequel est basé le célèbre Adagio. Il semblerait que les six mesures de la mélodie et la ligne de basse retrouvées aient constitué un passage d’un mouvement lent d’une sonate trois. Vers 1945, en partant de ces éléments, Remo Giazotto reconstitue une œuvre, célèbre de nos jours, comme l’Adagio d’Albinoni, alors qu’Albinoni lui-même ne serait probablement plus en mesure de reconnaître sa pièce.
