Well-known for his magnificent instrumental works and violin sonatas, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber is unjustly less recognized as a composer of sacred music. His works for Salzburg Cathedral were mainly written after 1670. The Stabat Mater is an impressive setting for use in worship, and includes four or six verses of the hymn. The four-part composition displays great simplicity yet stunning beauty, particularly in the concise contrapuntal presentation of each individual verse. In 1856, the year in which Mozart's one-hundredth birthday was elaborately celebrated, Franz Lachner composed the Requiem in F minor op. 146. It became his most well-known and most important work. Lachner's intensive study of Mozart's music on the occasion of the commemorative year lends credence to that fact that it was not inspired by a personal loss, such as a death in the family or among his friends. Although closer examination proves that his music differed essentially from Mozart's, Lachner's work shows a clear expression of his admiration for him. The parallels between the two Requiems range from the characteristics of the organization of the text and the formal structure, to the similar treatment of individual sections, themes and motives.

UPC: 785147717706. English, Latin. Text source: Isaiah 9:6, Latin Vulgate, alt.; Translation: Jane Hettrick. Scripture: Isaiah 9:6.
The text, Isaiah 9:6, is found as the offertory for Christmas in the Roman Missal. The music is pure classical period—think Haydn, to whom this piece, incidentally, has been wrongly attributed. Scored for organ and choir, with three strings and two trombones, it includes both Latin and English texts. SATB. GIA is pleased to offer this edited and translated version of the Christmas offertory Parvulus filius by Franz Schneider. Based on research from the Melk archive of the Benedictine monastery in Lower Austria, Jane Hettrick has prepared a fantastic edition of this little-known historical gem. The text is provided in both Latin and English, and a continuo of two violins, cello, and two trombones (which double the alto and tenor voices) is also available. Editorial slurs and articulations are also provided.

Although the music of the younger Haydn brother was highly regarded by his contemporaries, his music was forgotten in the 19th century and still waits to be rediscovered. One of his more well-known works is the central piece on the present CD, the German Mass Hier liegt vor deiner Majestat MH 560 (Here before thy majesty), a work which is musically the epitome of south-German/Austrian Catholicism and which to this day is still a part of church music practice in this region. Franz Xaver Richter probably wrote his Missa in A, with the nickname Hyemalis (winter), between 1781 and 1783, during his tenure as Kapellmeister at the Strasbourg Cathedral. This peculiar epithet leads us to presume that the Mass was meant to be performed during a sacred service in a time period between Epiphany and the Sunday before Ash Wednesday (Quinquagesima). The present work, a first edition, is a Messe sollenne senza Trombe, in which Richter achieved a festive character with musical variety by means of a comparably modest ensemble.
