The Mass in C minor, K. 427, Mozart's Great Mass remaines a torso - a circumstance which is extremely regrettable, especially given the monumentality of this work. Mozart finished only the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Osanna, and Benedictus of the Mass. For two movements from the Credo he only completed sketches without instrumentation. In March 1785 Mozart arranged Kyrie and Gloria, supplemented by a tenor and a soprano aria, for the Italian oratorio Davide penitente. In his arrangement of the Mass in c minor, Richard Maunder added Creed wind and brass instruments to the Credo sketches. Score available separately - see item CA.4062000.

The Missa brevis in C Major, for 4 vocal parts and organ, was long considered one of young Mozart's excercises in The Italian style of church music. Karl Pfannhauser, after his studies of Leopold Mozart's masses, was the first to discover that the C-major fragment had been incorporated into the latter's Missa solemnis in C Major. As Mozart was only 8 years old at the time his father wrote this mass, he cannot be deemed the composer of the fragmentary C-major mass that is listed as KV 115. The mass contains only the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo and Sanctus, the last of which breaks off in bar 9. For the present edition our aim was to draw upon Leopold's own works for the missing parts. The C Minor Mass K. 427 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a fascinating work. But to speak of the Mass is inaccurate, for basically it is no more than a musical torso, full of enigmas and problems, yet full of magnificent music. It is hardly surprising that attempts have been made to create a performable version of Mozart's fragment since the 19th century. Depending on the date of reconstruction and background of the arranger, these attempts sound quite different, and often the individual style of the respective arranger can be clearly discerned. Now Frieder Bernius and Uwe Wolf have published a new edition of the Mozart mass which attempts to produce a performing version whilst maintaining the greatest respect for the available material, and without obscuring Mozart's musical manuscript with their own contributions. The joint version by Wolf, a renowned musicologist, and Bernius, an expert in historically-informed performance practice, is based on a thorough knowledge of Mozart's compositions, his notational habits, and church music practice of Mozart's day. At the same time it fully meets the requirements of today's performance practice. As well as the paperback full score, we are publishing a high-quality clothbound full score including a Facsimile Supplement with selected reproductions of the sources. A first recording of this version, with the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Barockorchester Stuttgart conducted by Frieder Bernius, is also available. Score available separately - see item CA.5165100.

Among the 56 masses by Eberlin known at present this Missa in C is the shortest. Marked by its skilful construction and its ease in performance, this work can very well prove a valuable rediscovery for use at church services. Its many alternative details of scoring also make it suitable for concert performances. Score available separately - see item CA.9101500.
