Avalon is a one-part composition. The surprising opening measures describe the sudden entrance into another world. After these initial measures, we hear a choral-like melody, which is repeated three times in different instrumentations with increasing intensity. This represents the procession of the ghosts dwelling in the underworld of Avalon, headed by the mighty magician Merlin.The exalted sound is then suddenly interrupted by a fast movement, in which ostinato figures alternate with bi-tonal motives. This represents the attempt of some evil characters to invade Avalon. Mordred is the leader of this horde and together they disturb the peace and quiet in the otherwisecalm Avalon. The flourish of trumpets heralds the entrance of the Knights of the Round Table who drive away the intruders and return to their castle, Tintagel, in a triumphal procession. Upon their return, the next problem presents itself. An inexplicable disease plagues the resting ghosts.The Knights and the Council of the Wise are convened to find out the cause of this problem. Musically this can be heard in the repetition of the initial themes. The Knights and the Council of the Wise determine that the presence of mortals is the reason that the resting ghosts are suffering. There is simply no room for mortal souls in Avalon. After a powerful statement by King Arthur, we hear a glissando referring to the very first measures, and… we are back in the normal world. The journey through the underworld has come to an end and a dream is over. Avalon est une pièce dont le décor et les personnages sont empruntés aux légendes arthuriennes. L’œuvre débute par quelques mesures surprenantes qui nous font entrer subitement dans un autre monde. Une mélodie produisant l’effet d’un chœur représente la procession des fantômes et des esprits qui vivent dans l’île magique d’Avalon, avec, leur tête, le puissant magicien Merlin. Soudain, des figures ostinato et des phrases bitonales expriment la tentative d’une horde maléfique conduite par Mordred d’envahir le monde paisible d’Avalon. Après que le Roi Arthur soit intervenu avec force, on entend un glissando qui rappelle les toutes premières mesures, et… noussommes de retour dans le monde réel. Le voyage se termine et un rêve prend fin.

Inspiration was commissioned by the Solothurnischer Kanotonal Musikverband in Switzerland in 1993. The composition begins with an A-theme written in a Phrygian tonality and, after an enormous climax, moves on into a quicker B-section, characterized by the use of wide interval jumps. Then follows the development in which both themes return individually and together. Peace and quiet is restored in the slow middle movement, based on the B-theme. The movement comes to a close with a tutti B-theme, brutally interrupted by fragments from the A-theme. Without a break, the final movement of this contrastive piece develops from these fragments. The theme of this extremelyrhythmical closing movement is built up of elements from the A-theme, whilst the B-theme (from the slow middle movement) returns in full once more. Before the piece comes to a close in a resounding fortissimo, the cornet soloist performs the A-theme from the back of the auditorium, to special effect. Het werk begint met een in de frygische toonaard gecomponeerd thema A, dat na een climax overgaat in een snel gedeelte. Dit thema B valt op door de grote intervalsprongen. Hierna volgt een doorwerking waarin de twee hoofdthema's zowelafzonderlijk als gelijktijdig terugkeren. Het werk komt tot rust in een langzaam middengedeelte dat gebaseerd is op het B-thema. Het deel sluit af met een tutti gespeeld B-thema dat wreed wordt ge nterrumpeerd door fragmentenvan het A-thema, terwijl het B-thema (uit het langzame middendeel) in zijn geheel nog een keer terugkeert. Voordat het werk in een stralend fortissimo afsluit, ontstaat een bijzonder effect doordat de trompetsolist het A-thema speeltvan achter uit de zaal.Inspiration, ein Werk, das Jan de Haan für den Musikverband Solothurn komponierte, ist eine spannende Komposition mit zwei sehr unterschiedlichen Hauptthemen, die im Verlauf des Stückes teils einzeln, teils parallel behandelt werden. Der rassige erste Satz wird gefolgt von einem ruhigen Mittelteil, der Schlusssatz ist hingegen sehr rhythmisch und endet in einem glänzenden Fortissimo. Ein kontrastreiches Werk, das Musiker und Publikum gleichermaßen inspirieren wird!

Het eerste deel heeft het karakter van een pastorale en beschrijfthet landelijke karakter van een - in basis - industrieel gebied. In sterk contrast daarop volgt een dynamisch allegro met toespelingen op Leonard Bernstein. Alle registers van het moderne blaasorkest komen aan hun trekken in Bythe River. Maar ook het publiek wordt flink op de proef gesteld, wil het alle thematische en melodische elementen van dit afwisselende werk doorgronden..!Dem Auftraggeber dieses Werkes ist der Komponist in mehrfacher Weise sehr verbunden, wodurch By the River ein sehr persönliches und eindringliches Werk geworden ist. Der erste Teil ist von pastoralem Charakter und beschreibt den ländlichen Charakter einer eigentlichen Industrieregion. Stark kontrastiv folgt darauf ein dynamisches Allegro mit einer Anspielung auf Leonard Bernstein. Alle Register des modernen Blasorchesters sind in By the River gefordert, genau wie die Aufmerksamkeit des Publikums, wenn es alle thematischen und melodischen Elemente dieses abwechslungsreichen Werkes erfassen will.By the River (Près de la rivière) est une oeuvre que Jan van der Roost affectionne tout particulièrement. La première partie s’ouvre sur motif plutôt pastoral et décrit le caractère assez rural des gens du pays vivant dans une certaine région industrielle. Un dynamique allegro amène en contraste un bref clin d’oeil Leonard Berstein. Afin de pouvoir restituer cette composition dans toute sa diversité, l’ensemble des registres de l’orchestre d’harmonie contemporain sera sollicité. Votre attentif auditoire en restera époustouflé !By the River è un’opera alla quale Jan Van der Roost è particolarmente affezionato. La prima parte si apre su un motivo pastorale e descrive il carattere rimasto rurale di alcuni popoli che vivono in regioni ormai industrializzate. Segue un dinamico allegro, breve ma che ricorda la musica di Leonard Bernstein. Una composizione che sollecita tutti i registri della banda e che entusiasmer il pubblico!
