Funeral Procession for Violin, Viola and Chamber Ensemble was composed in 1989 as a commission from the Sonanza Ensemble. The music is, apart from a few swarming bursts, slow and silent. Dynamic is almost stripped away, and the musicians play as faintly as possible - almost inaudibly.

Andras Szollosy (1921-2007) was one of the most significant Hungarian composers of the second half of the 20th century, yet his oeuvre has not become as well-known as that of Gyorgy Ligeti, two years his junior, or of Gyorgy Kurtag, five years his junior. Szollosy did not compose many works and he was strict about which of them he would allow to go public. As a younger colleague of his once remarked: He only composed his good works. Szollosy's Sonata for Solo Violin, which was written at the age of 26 and was publicly performed only in 2006, almost 60 years after its composition, fell victim to his self-criticism. Although the model of Bartok's Sonata for Solo Violin of just three years earlier was obviously on the young composer's mind, he was no epigone of the great master. From the aspect of both composition and instrumental technique, the 11-minute Sonata for Solo Violin represents exacting and prominent music, and is a remarkable piece among works written for the violin in 20th-century Hungarian music. The score of the posthumously published work was edited by the soloist of its world premiere, Michael Barta.

The piece was composed at the request of violinist Eszter Perenyi, my colleague at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, and was several times amond the optional pieces of the yearly violin competition for students. It was inspired by the famous 63rd poem of Catullus that tells the story of Attis: the hero of the Greek mythology arrives at the Mount Ida in Frygia, to the invitation of the goddess Cybele, and becomes her lover. The Gallas, certitude priests of Cybele chase him into delirious dance, by the end of which he castrates himself. On waking from his paralysed dream he entreats in vain for his virility and freedom to Cybele, he will remain servant of the goddess for eternity. My work tells the story in four parts: 1) Attis' ecstasy 2) Dance of the Gallas 3) Attis' dream 4) Attis' entreaty. The Catullian galliambic metric that first appears in the 'prologue' of the piece, becomes the organisational principle of almost all musical aspects of it. (Hungaroton HCD 32484).

According to Geza Szilvay, the Colourstrings (r) method can make a violin player of almost anyone with motivation. The key to maintaining musical culture lies with the teacher. The Colourstrings (r) is a teaching method developed by Geza and Csaba Szilvay. Themethod is ideal for preschool beginners and can be used effectively in instrumental teaching throughout the school years. It createsan environment in which singing, playing games and instrument live side by side, for the happiness of the child. The Handbook for Teachers and Parents brings together the entire Colourstrings(r) series for the violin. The Handbook guides the teachers and parents through books A-F and Yellow Pages I-III, offering expert advice and methodological support to teaching in Colourstrings(r) method. The method makes use of colourful teaching materials and supports learning by appealing to many senses. Founded on the principles ofZoltan Kodaly, Colourstrings (r) develops the capacity for internal listening so that the child learns to visualize the notes heard and to aurilize the notes on the page. The method has been fostered by ESTA, ASTA, AUSTA, ISME, NMPU and IKS. The Colourstrings(r) approach developed by the Szilvay brothers has gained an international reputation and is now taught all over the world. A number of special Colourstrings(r) institutions - schools, centres and societies - have been established in several European countries in order to implement and further this child-centred teaching concept.

Work comment by the composer: The lonely one was composed during May and June of the year 2000. It was written for Annika Gustafsson, to whom it is also dedicated. It was world-premiered on December 1 the same year in Caroli Church in Malmo. After that I had composed The Threat of War that was a dramatic and massive work for orchestra, I wanted to focus on melodic as well as harmonic and rhyhtmical processes combined with a inner dramatic content. In this case the solo violin works as a narrator where the piece itself is like a monologue without words. In the score there are imprinted expressions like racontare (tellingly), piacevole (pleasingly) och sospirare(sighing). The lonely one is divided in three sections. 1. Doloroso (Painful) - the violin plays almost imperceptly sighing glissandi that forms the basic material of the work. Its character is constantly searching. It leads up to the section Risoluto (Resolute) that has a very determined and edgy expression. 2. Misterioso (Mysteriously) - the materials from the previous section are now further developed. It builds up and breaks down during the course of the journey. Eventually it reaches a climax on a high d. 3. Calmando e espressivo (Calmingly and expressive) - From the high d it is stepping down to a recapture on material from the first part slightly changed and moody character. It dies out slowly with the lonely notes. Benjamin Staern

1st perf: Darragh Morgan, The Picture Gallery, Royal Holloway College, University of London, 15 November 2006 Programme Note Lucky's Speech was composed at the request of the violinist Darragh Morgan, for the launch of his recital CD Opera on the NMC label in June 2006. The title refers to a pivotal moment in Samuel Beckett's play Waiting for Godot, when the hitherto silent character Lucky suddenly pours forth a torrential stream of gibberish. This idea also suggested the cadenza of my Violin Concerto, composed in the same year, and it is reflected in both cases by an almost breathless musical activity punctuated by pizzicato commentaries. I should like to thank Darragh Morgan for his invaluable advice in the preparation of the score.

For almost 100 years, violinists had to live without Eugene Ysaye's Sonata Op. 27bis. The work was re-discovered in a sketchbook recently given to the library of Brussels' Koninklijk Conservatorium and is now published for the first time. The Sonate posthume was composed in the surrounding of Ysaye's famous cycle of six solo sonatas for violin and shares their artistic quality.

Racconto (Tale)/ Capri/ Cielo sereno (Clear sky)/ Tano/ Napolitango/ Luci della spiaggia (Beach lights)/ Fantasia mediterranea (Mediterranean fantasy)/ Una lacrima ridente (A smiling tear)/ Quartieri spagnoli/ Marcia dei pomodori (March of the tomatos)Being interested in certain aspects of popular music, I became aware of several similarities between popular Neapolitan melodies and the Argentinean tango. Napolitango is based on an imaginary journey to Naples and Buenos Aires. In retaining certain characteristics of the original music, Napolitango embodies an inspiration and an almost theatrically passionate character which is common to these two genres. The piece has been composed for the Parisian Festival Paris Banlieues Tango 2001.(S. Di Stefano).
